Finals - January 7

Well, someone is going to get their New Year's Resolution fulfilled. Which one of 4 teams will do it? At stake - the Dodgeball title and $25,000 in cold hard cash. The team leaders win $5,000 for getting to the finals and an extra $20,000 awaits them.

Let's get this party started.

Semi-Final Match #1 - CPA (7-3) Vs. Armed Response (7-4)

The teams split during the regular season. Who will win the rubber match?

Round #1 - Spigel goes over the line. That's not good for the team who relies on him to get regens. Rice also takes out Costanza, which isn't good for the team that relies on him for kills. Benedetto gets rid of Sommers, which isn't good for the team that needs her for catches. Waltrin gets rid of Pospich, which is...well, it doesn't matter because she hasn't been useful. Neither is McKinney, but he catches a ball, which brings back Spigel. McKinney then gets tagged out, which...also doesn't make much difference, because he hasn't been very useful either. But Spigel is, and he regenerates the team. That doesn't seem to help, as Pospich and Costanza leave, but not before Benedetto gets taken out by Spigel. Rice is out too, so the CPAs need to eliminate Waltrin to leave the women for easy pickings. McKinney can't, and Waltrin gets him on the rebound. He then knocks out Sommers and then Spigel for the win. The defending champions are on the ropes. (Response leads, 1-0).

Round #2 - The CPAs need this one or it's all over. They are playing like they want all over to be early, as Pospich, McKinney and Spigel are all out early. Costanza joins them and Sommers is all alone. She does manage to regen the team, but Waltrin eliminates Pospich on the return. Fenderbosch and Costanza are eliminated in quick kills. Rice catches a Spigel shot and it's now Armed Response Vs. McKinney and Sommers. McKinney is out and it's everyone against Sommers, with no regens left. Sommers attempts to catch a Waltrin pass, but she drops it and we're going to have new Dodgeball Champions. (Armed Response Wins, 2-0). This wasn't even close, and the lack of production by McKinney, Sommers and Pospich finally does them in. Gretchen Weiss and Steve Altes must be reading this recap and smiling.

In an interview, McKinney says that their game has suffered all season and they don't know why. Costanza says that they can't win on good looks alone, and a quick look back to episode 1 with the CPA's not working as hard as everyone else during the drills seems to be the reason why their skills aren't good. You have a feeling they will have something to prove next year?

I expected the last game to go 3 rounds. For this game however, I only expect it to last 2.

Match #2 - Delta Force (6-4) Vs. Reef Sharks (6-5)

The teams split during the regular season, but the Shark's win was during Week #1, while the Delta's win was on Week #10 and sewed up the Division title.

Round #1 - And the Shark eliminations are already starting as Bullis crosses the line. Pontius leaves too, but so does Roe and Mead. Thomas catches a shot and Bullis comes back on. Green comes on the attack and gets Bullis. Long is next and the Shark ladies need to step up. They don't - Thomas and Wiseman both get knocked out by Green, who has been the machine in this match (Delta's lead, 1-0).

Pontius says that they need to control the game and slow the pacing down. Long says that they have to target Green - either hitting him out of the game or spiking ex-lax in his refreshment drink. Nice.

Round #2 - Long is out - but is right back in with a Pontius catch on Green. Roe, Mead and Overheu are shortly out thereafter and Marshall has to regen the team. She doesn't, thanks to Pontius. (Tied, 1-1).

Round #3 - The Dead Men Walking are Marshall and Wiseman, and before you ask, yes, this is the first time that both dead men are women. It's good that the dead man wasn't Long, because he's out. He comes back in thanks to a Bullis catch on Roe, but Green catches a long shot and the Force are back in Full Force. Long tags out Green and it could be a turning point. Long takes out Mead and it's now only 3 on 2. Long takes out Overheu, but in his glory, he jumps over a shot from Roe - and the shot hits the dead woman Wiseman. That's game, set and match and the Force moves into the Finals (Force win, 2-1).

Strong interviews Roe, who has a lot of respect for the sharks and adds that they are ready for the Response. Long is upset because of his bone-headed play. Apparently, the bone-headedness from Pontius is spreading. They may have to deep-six that if they want to win the title next year.

Let's talk about next year next year. Let's talk right now about....now.

FINALS - Delta Force (7-4) Vs. Armed Response (8-4).

The teams played once, during Week #9. The team that won that match-up - The Deltas in 3 games. Keep in mind that Waltrin didn't play in that game. Will that make a difference and can the Response figure out how to stop Green?

Round #1 - After some shenanigans, we start off the match with Watrin and Fenderbosch being picked off from Green in a double kill. That can't be good for the Response, and it isn't, as Rice and Benedetto get picked off and Zingale leaves 5 seconds later. (Delta Force leads 1-0).

Roe says that the match is over in 2 rounds and the Response has no shot. What did your momma ever tell you about talking before the match ends? Didn't you learn from Frisoli?

Round #2 - Meed and Roe both goes over the line and are out. Overheu bails out Roe with a catch, and they take out Rice and Watrin. Zingale and Fenderbosch goes out quickly, and the Force are 20 seconds from victory if they can get rid of Benedetto. They can't, though, and the Response is regenerated. Now that Watrin has been in the match for more than 10 seconds, he knocks out Green and Roe until Marshall is left. Can she regen? No, as Watrin gets her in the left foot. (Tied at 1)

Championship Round - The dead people are Marshall for the Deltas and Benedetto for the Response. The Force go back to original strategy and eliminate Watrin first. Rice is next and the women leave shortly after. The Force have another 20 seconds to nail Benedetto to win the championship, but they can't and the Response is fully regenerated. Roe nails Zingale and Watrin gets a Mead/Green double-kill. Fenderbosch gets hit while protecting Benedetto but Roe gets tagged by Watrin, and he has 20 seconds to eliminate Marshall. She escapes for 17 seconds, but Watrin knocks the ball out of Marshall's hands and it's all over. (Response wins, 2-1). Game, Set, Match and Championship to the Response, while Marshall can only be consoled with a hug.

In the post-interviews, Benedetto says that it came down to experience and heart. Marshall says that she thought she let her team down, but they gave it their all and that's what matters.

We're not done yet - we have a presentation to be had. We get a presentation of 6, as Danno Kingman comes to join them. I wonder how much he gets. The rest of the league joins them as confetti comes raining down on everyone. We finish with Bill, Zach and Mary wanting us all there for Season 3 of Extreme Dodgeball. Fade to Black. End of Series.

My take? It's very hard to have a second season that's better than the first one. Extreme Dodgeball manages to pull it off. 8 teams. Every game televised. 12 Episodes. Better rules and quick rule changes when needed. I can't find anything to nitpick on - except that the CPA didn't win. The best team did though, and that gets an almost-perfect A from me. I can't wait for season 3.

This has been Gordon Pepper recapping Extreme Dodgeball 2. Thank you for not dodging the recaps.
