Sports + Politics + Finances = Backburner: Part 3 Subtitle 1: Casualties
October 28

We finally get our first victims of the season. Some of the shows get yanked temporarily (due to the presidential elections, the World Series, etc.) and some of them will be yanked permanently. So which is which? How what shows are in danger of joining them? Let's find out as we spend another week looking at the numbers.

MONDAY, OCTOBER 20
DANCING WITH THE STARS (ABC)
September 22: 21.12 million (#1) / 5.3 for 18-49 (#1)
September 29: 19.84 million (#1 in it's time slot ) / 4.7 for 18-49 (#1 in it's time slot)

October 6: 18.81 million (#1 in it's time slot) / 4.3 for 18-49 (#1 in it's time slot)
October 13: 17.66 million (#1 in it's time slot) / 4.0 for 18-49 (#1 in it's time slot)
October 20: 18.55 million (#1 in it's time slot) / 4.1 for 18-49 (#1 in it's time slot)
DWTS will definitely not be a casualty. Certainly not with those numbers. Though most of America is praying that Cloris Leachman will be one.

TUESDAY, OCTOBER 21
OPPORTUNITY KNOCKS (ABC)
September 23: 6.63 million (#4) / 1.8 for 18-49 (#4)
September 30: 5.91 million (#4) / 1.8 for 18-49 (#4)
October 7: PRESIDENTIAL DEBATE (Around 13 million)

October 14: 5.31 million (#4) / 1.3 for 18-49 (#4)
October 21: CASUALTY

CASUALTY We say goodbye to Opportunity Knocks, the first game show casualty of the Primetime Fall Schedule. It won't be the last, as we will see later on during the week. ABC decided that a repeat of yesterday's Dancing With The Stars will do better. Does it?

DANCING WITH THE STARS (ABC)
September 23: 18.2 million (#1) / 4.7 for 18-49 (#1)
September 30: 15.14 million viewers (#2) / 3.6 for 18-49 (#3)
October 7: 13.44 million viewers (#2) / 3.3 for 18-49 (#2)
October 14: 14.37 million viewers (#2) / 3.2 for 18-49 (#2)
October 21: 9.34 million viewers (#3) / 2.4 for 18-49 (#4)  (Repeat)
October 21: 16.02 million viewers (#2) / 3.8 for 18-49 (#2)
(New Show)

It sure does. Not only do they see an 80% increase over Opportunity Knocks, but it also gets a boost to it's results show. People figure that they'd leave the TV on all night. So if this goes up, then something else must go down...

THE BIGGEST LOSER (NBC)
September 16: 7.81 million (3.1 for 18-49)
September 23: 7.18 million (#3) (2.9 for 18-49) (#3)
October 7: 7.49 million (#3) (3.0 for 18-49) (#3)
October 14: 7.71 million (#4) (3.2 for 18-49) (#4)
October 21: 7.30 million (#4) (2.8 for 18-49) (#4)

And the audience does go down here, but the damage is slight. It doesn't look like the change will affect the show. Next weeks numbers will tell more on this trend.

WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 22
BASEBALL (FOX) (WORLD SERIES GAME 1) - 13.91 Million Viewers
That's a nice number…sort of. 13.91 million is always a nice number, but the audience is actually down from last year, when Boston and Colorado averaged 16+ million. Will it affect Deal Or No Deal?

DEAL OR NO DEAL (NBC)
October 22: 7.60 million / 1.9 for 18-49
It sure will. Yeowch. I guess it we know that we're giving out a million and we don’t know when the show airs, the people won't show up. Way to ruin a nice money making show, NBC. Will it affect America's Next Top Model?

AMERICA'S NEXT TOP MODEL (CW)

September 3: 3.5 million (1.7 for 18-49)
September 10: 3.84 million (2.0 for 18-49)
September 17: 4.24 million (2.1 for 18-49)
September 24: 4.07 million (2.1 for 18-49)
October 1: 4.01 million / 1.8 for 18-49
October 8: 3.88 million / 1.7 for 18-49
October 15: 3.15 million / 1.5 for 18-49  (Clip Show)
October 22: 4.38 million / 2.1 for 18-49

Not only is it not affected, ANTM pulls out it's best ratings of the season. I guess most young girls do not watch baseball - or don't care about either Philadelphia or Tampa Bay. That's a good sign for the show.

STYLISTA (CW)
October 22: 2.46 million (1.2 for 18-49)
However, the 2.46 is a bad sign for Stylista. That's an almost 50% drop from Top Model. And with none of the contestants either likable or memorable, (and with Anne Slowey being a complete caricature of Meryl Streep's character in The Devil Wears Prada), I expect the numbers to go down, not up.

THURSDAY, OCTOBER 23

BASEBALL (FOX) (WORLD SERIES GAME 1) - 11.73 Million Viewers

SURVIVOR (CBS)
September 25: 12.91million (#1) (4.4 for 18-49) (#1)
October 2: 12.85 million (#1) / 4.3 for 18-49 (#1)
October 9: 13.31 million (#1) / 4.3 for 18-49 (#1)
October 9: 13.31 million (#1) / 4.3 for 18-49 (#1)
October 16: 12.88 million (#1) / 4.2 for 18-49 (#1)
October 23: 13.40 million (#1) / 4.4 for 18-49 (#1)
Not only is it the number one show in the time slot (knocking off Baseball), but it's also got the best ratings of not on ly this season, but the past 2 seasons. Dumb contestants may not make good gameplay, but it does make increased viewership.

HOLE IN THE WALL (FOX)
September 11: 5.37 million (2.3 for 18-49)
September 18: 4.72 million (2.0 for 18-49)
October 2: 3.95 million (#5) / 1.6 for 18-49 (#4)

October 9: BASEBALL 6.8 million (#3) / 2.2 for 18-49 (#3)
October 16: 3.62 million (#5) / 1.4 for 18-49 (#4)
October 23: BASEBALL

I still wouldn’t be getting too attached to this show, if I was you.

FRIDAY, OCTOBER 24
ARE YOU SMARTER THAN A 5TH GRADER? (FOX)
September 5: 7.57 million (2.0 for 18-49) (MILLION AWARDED)
September 12: 6.92 million (1.8 for 18-49)
September 19: 5.93 million (#1) (1.3 for 18-49) (#2)
September 26: 5.1 million (#3) (1.5 for 18-49) (#3)
October 3: 5.81 million (#2) / 1.3 for 18-49 (#2)
October 10: 5.79 million (#2) / 1.4 for 18-49 (#2) (KEN JENNINGS)
October 17: 5.08 million (#3) / 1.5 for 18-49 (#4)
October 24: 5.71million (#3) / 1.2 for 18-49 (#4)

When they announce the cancellation of the show, I'm going to throw something hard at the idiot who moved it out of it's time-slot winning area. Really.

DEAL OR NO DEAL (NBC)

October 24: 6.04 million (#3) / 1.4 for 18-49 (#4)

I don't get the strategy here at all with NBC plopping DOND here. Can't they keep the show in one area and not over-expose it all over the week?

SATURDAY, OCTOBER 25
AMERICA'S TOUGHEST JOBS
September 1: 7.33 million (2.4 for 18-49)
September 8: 6.48 million (2.6 for 18-49)
September 15: 4.95 million (#4) (1.6 for 18-49) (#5)
September 19: 3.34 million (1.1 for 18-49)
September 26: 4.56 million (#4) (1.3 for 18-49) (#5)
October 3: 3.42 million (#4) (1.0 for 18-49) (#4)
October 10: 3.95 million (#4) (1.2 for 18-49) (#4)
October 18: 2.49 million (#4) (0.7 for 18-49) (#4)
October 25: 3.07 million (#4) (0.7 for 18-49) (#4)

Oh look - the ratings went over a 3.0./ Whoopie.

SUNDAY, OCTOBER 19

THE AMAZING RACE (CBS)
September 28: 10.29 million (#3) (3.2 for 18-49) (#4)
October 5: 10.78 million (#3) (3.2 for 18-49) (#4) (started at 8:30p)
October 12: 9.17million (#4) / 2.8 for 18-49 (#4)
October 19: 10.45 million (#2) / 2.8 for 18-49 (#2)
October 26: 9.71 million (#3) / 2.9 for 18-49 (#3)

Desperate Housewives  and The World series beat it, but the show is still holding it's own with some very strong numbers. It should have no problem getting a renewal if it keeps this pace up.

AMERICA'S FUNNIEST HOME VIDEOS (ABC)
October 5: 9.11 million (#2) / 2.7 for 18-49 (#2)
October 12: 6.39 million (#3) / 1.9 for 18-49 (#3)

October 12: 8.17 million (#2) / 2.1 for 18-49 (#2)
October 12: 8.53 million (#2) / 2.4 for 18-49 (#2)

The 8+ number for a show as relatively cheep like AFHV is a great number. Keep on trucking.

Next week - The first of 2 more weeks worth of elections. Will we have any more casualties? Join us in 7 to find out.
