Sports + Politics + Finances = Backburner
October 14

You would figure that this week, the game shows would take a hit. You only have a set of debates, Wall Street and Major League Baseball to worry about. But the question becomes how much of a hit did it take? Did it take any at all? And are networks hoping that the elections could last all year? We'll all find out together as we spend another week looking at the numbers.

MONDAY, OCTOBER 6

DANCING WITH THE STARS (ABC)
September 22: 21.12 million (#1) / 5.3 for 18-49 (#1)
September 29: 19.84 million (#1 in it's time slot ) /  4.7 for 18-49 (#1 in it's time slot)

October 6: 18.81 million (#1 in it's time slot) /  4.3 for 18-49 (#1 in it's time slot)

So long Misty May. Sob. But the numbers for the program are still tremendous.

TUESDAY, OCTOBER 7

DANCING WITH THE STARS (ABC)
September 23: 18.2 million (#1) / 4.7 for 18-49 (#1)
September 30: 15.14 million viewers (#2) /  3.6 for 18-49 (#3)
October 7: 13.44 million viewers (#2) /  3.3 for 18-49 (#2)

So why did they fall off here? Because most people figured out that with Misty pulling herself out, that there wasn't going to be an elimination. And they were right. Pat yourself on the back.

OPPORTUNITY KNOCKS (ABC)
September 23: 6.63 million (#4)  / 1.8 for 18-49 (#4)
September 30: 5.91 million (#4) / 1.8 for 18-49 (#4)
October 7: PRESIDENTIAL DEBATE (Around 13 million)

I don't know who's happier, Barack Obama, for making John McCain look like a tool, or ABC, for getting more than double the ratings here that they would have gotten if Opportunity Knocks was airing this week instead.

THE BIGGEST LOSER  (NBC)
September 16: 7.81 million (3.1 for 18-49)
September 23: 7.18 million  (#3) (2.9 for 18-49) (#3)
October 7: 7.49 million  (#3) (3.0 for 18-49) (#3)

NBC can also be happy, because some of those people who weren't watching DWTS were watching part one of their show.

PARIS HILTON'S MY BFF
October 7: 1.3 Million

America's Best Dance Crew averaged around a 2.0, so this isn't MTV's biggest hit. However, Top Pop Group struggled to break a 1.0, so this isn't MTV's biggest miss, either. Call this one room to grow on, but if you see it moving to a new timeslot soon, then MTV has deemed that Paris is not hot.

WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 8

THE BIGGEST LOSER  (NBC)
October 8: 6.56 million  (#3) (2.7 for 18-49) (#2)

I understand why you split the show up - it wasn't really your choice. You had to do it because of the debate. That being said, that show is not going to slow down the CBS dominance of Wednesday nights, so I would advise you to not do it again. If you have this problem again, then don't air a show this week and just put in an episode of Deal Or No Deal instead of burying it on Friday nights.

AMERICA'S NEXT TOP MODEL (CW)
September 3: 3.5 million (1.7 for 18-49)
September 10: 3.84 million (2.0 for 18-49)
September 17: 4.24 million (2.1 for 18-49)
September 24: 4.07 million (2.1 for 18-49)
October 1: 4.01 million / 1.8 for 18-49
October 8: 3.88 million / 1.7 for 18-49

ANTM is still running along at around a 4.0 clip. Still the #1 show on the CW. Nicely done.

THURSDAY, OCTOBER 9 - BASEBALL DIVISIONAL SERIES BEGIN

SURVIVOR (CBS)
September 25: 12.91million (#1) (4.4 for 18-49) (#1)
October 2: 12.85 million (#1) / 4.3 for 18-49 (#1)
October 9: 13.31 million (#1) / 4.3 for 18-49 (#1)

Not only was Survivor not affected, the numbers actually went up. This is also one of the best seasons to come along in a while, and you can already see who's going to be good and who's going to be evil. Or maybe I should say who's going to play the game and who's going to be the chicken lead to KFC.

HOLE IN THE WALL (FOX)
September 11: 5.37 million (2.3 for 18-49)
September 18: 4.72 million (2.0 for 18-49)
October 2: 3.95 million (#5) /  1.6 for 18-49 (#4)

October 9: BASEBALL 6.8 million (#3) /  2.2 for 18-49 (#3)

Based on the numbers, it wouldn't shock me if post-baseball, we saw a game show here with Jeff Foxworthy instead of Brooke Burns.

FRIDAY, OCTOBER 10

ARE YOU SMARTER THAN A 5TH GRADER? (FOX)
September 5: 7.57 million (2.0 for 18-49) (MILLION AWARDED)
September 12: 6.92 million (1.8 for 18-49)
September 19: 5.93 million (#1) (1.3 for 18-49) (#2)
September 26: 5.1 million (#3) (1.5 for 18-49) (#3)
October 3: 5.81 million (#2) / 1.3 for 18-49 (#2)
October 10: 5.79 million (#2) / 1.4 for 18-49 (#2)  (KEN JENNINGS)

…because there's no way a show with Ken Jennings and company should be wasting away on Friday nights. Even if it is doing better than double the numbers the predecessor had here.

DON'T FORGET THE LYRICS (FOX)
September 12: 5.72 million (1.7 for 18-49)
September 19: 5.31 million (#2) (1.5 for 18-49)
October 3: 4.41 million (#3)  / (1.4 for 18-49) (#4)
October 10: 4.87 million (#3)  / (1.4 for 18-49) (#4)

I'm hoping that's what FOX is thinking here also, because Wayne and company should be doing much better than this.

DEAL OR NO DEAL (NBC)
October 3: 6.26 million (#2)  / (1.5 for 18-49) (#2)
October 10: 6.52 million (#2)  / (1.5 for 18-49) (#2)

Same thing applies here - though I suspect that DOND's move to Wednesday will coincide right when the newest Million Dollar Mission ends…oh yes, only a few weeks left until November Sweeps, eh?

AMERICA'S TOUGHEST JOBS
September 1: 7.33 million (2.4 for 18-49)
September 8: 6.48 million (2.6 for 18-49)
September 15: 4.95 million (#4) (1.6 for 18-49) (#5)
September 19: 3.34 million  (1.1 for 18-49)
September 26: 4.56 million  (#4) (1.3 for 18-49) (#5)
October 3: 3.42 million (#4) (1.0 for 18-49) (#4)
October 10: 3.95 million (#4) (1.2 for 18-49) (#4)

The next toughest job: being a PR campaign manager for this show.

SATURDAY, OCTOBER 11

Macy’s Passport Celebrity Catwalk Challenge (NBC)
October 11: 2.10 million (#4) (0.6 for 18-49) (#4)
What? Was? That? And how did THAT get on the air to begin with?

SUNDAY, OCTOBER 12

THE AMAZING RACE (CBS)
September 28: 10.29 million  (#3) (3.2 for 18-49) (#4)
October 5: 10.78 million  (#3) (3.2 for 18-49) (#4) (started at 8:30p)
October 12: 9.17million (#4) / 2.8 for 18-49 (#4)

No surprise that this show is going to take a hit with both football and baseball going on - especially with one of the best football weekends we've seen in a while. The numbers will come back once November rolls around.

AMERICA'S FUNNIEST HOME VIDEOS (ABC)
October 5: 9.11 million (#2) /  2.7 for 18-49 (#2)
October 12: 6.39 million (#3) / 1.9 for 18-49 (#3)

Same thing here. This is a fluff show that's great to see when nothing else is on. Unfortunately, a lot of else is on, but that changes after the World Series.

Next week - More sports! More debates! Maybe more cable ratings. And what happens in Syndication when you give out a million? Join us in 7 days to find out.

Gordon Pepper will not be on "5th Grader", but he will watch next week. E-mail him at gordon@gameshownewsnet.com.
