When the Sweeps Are Gone
March 13
No more celebrity guests. No more 85
cases filled with a million dollars. No more dumb stupid big money wins
(save one). What happens when all of the sweep stunts aren't there and
the shows have to attract viewers on their own merits? Will the numbers
go up or down? We'll check that all out now as we visit the numbers.

American Idol
1/16/08 - 30.28 Million Viewers (12.6 Mil for 18-49)
1/23/08 - 27.75 Million Viewers (11.1 Mil for 18-49)
1/30/08 - 25.3 Million Viewers (9.9 Mil for 18-49)
2/6/08 - 26.02 Million Viewers (10.5 Mil for 18-49)
2/13/08 - 24.59 Million Viewers (9.8 Mil for 18-49)
2/20/08 - 28.67 Million Viewers (11.1 Mil for 18-49)
2/27/08 - 27.36 Million Viewers (10.4 Mil for 18-49)
3/5/08 - 28.1 Million Viewers (10.2 Mil for 18-49)
Apparently, you like the female singers. A whopping 28 million people
show up to see them croon their hearts out. Speaking of females, I'm
guessing a bunch of you stuck around to see the woman have her nervous
breakdown on TV...
The Moment of Truth
1/23/08 - 23.2 Million Viewers
(10.2 Mil for 18-49)
1/30/08 - 17.9 Million Viewers (7.9
Mil for 18-49)
2/6/08 - 16.9 Million Viewers (7.2
Mil for 18-49)
2/13/08 - 14.47 Million Viewers (6.2 Mil for
18-49)
2/25/08 - 8.59 million; (3.6 for A18-49)
(MONDAY)
3/5/08 - 15.01 Million Viewers (6.2 Mil for 18-49)
…Which didn't happen (stupid lying promo), but it did get the eyeballs.
15 million+ of them. The problem, of course, is that we’re only getting
the 15 mil because of Idol - vs. under 9 million with no Idol to support
it. That may - or may not - be enough for a renewal, or for the show to
only show up during Idol season.
Deal Or No Deal
1/2/08 - 12.2 Million Viewers
1/9/08 - 13.2 Million Viewers (3.5 Mil for 18-49)
1/16/08 - 11.83 Million Viewers (3.1 Mil for 18-49) (IDOL Week #1)
1/23/08 - 13.76 Million Viewers (3.7 Mil for 18-49) (IDOL Week #2)
1/30/08 - 9.8 Million Viewers (2.4 Mil for 18-49) (Repeat)
2/6/08 - 8.1 Million Viewers (1.8 Mil for 18-49) (Repeat)
2/13/08 - 10.99 Million Viewers (2.7 Mil for 18-49) (Non-Repeat)
2/20/08 - 8.93 Million Viewers (2.1 Mil for 18-49)
2/27/08 - 9.39 Million Viewers (2.6 Mil for 18-49)
3/5/08 - 8.99 Million Viewers (2.2 Mil for 18-49)
Apparently, more people wanted to see the woman potentially having a
nervous breakdown than to see someone potentially winning a million
dollars. Not that there's anything wrong with that, because although
DOND does lose some from Monday night, it is holding it's own against
Seacrest and company.
America's Next Top Model
2/20/08 -3.8 Million Viewers (1.9 Mil for
18-49)
2/27/08 -3.86 Million Viewers (2.0 Mil for 18-49)
3/5/08 - 3.6 Million Viewers (1.8 Mil for 18-49)
Tyra is also holding her own, but her show last year got at least 4
million viewers. This is definitely a drop downwards. Is that reason to
be concerned?
Big Brother
2/13/08 - 5.81 Million Viewers (2.1 Mil for 18-49)
2/20/08 - 5.24 Million Viewers (1.9 Mil for 18-49)
2/27/08 - 5.56 Million Viewers (2.1 Mil for 18-49)
3/5/08 - 5.68 Million Viewers (2.0 Mil for 18-49)
Bad season. Bad contestants. Bad ratings.
Bad, bad, bad.

American Idol
2/21/08 - 23.17 Million Viewers
(8.4 Mil for 18-49)
2/28/08 - 25.91 Million Viewers (9.8 Mil for 18-49)
3/6/08 - 26.2 Million Viewers (9.8 Mil for 18-49)
As the contestants go down, the numbers go up. We're up to 26.2 million
people who saw who your Final 12 would be. And if you thought that these
people would mean you'd have a record number of people watching Don't
Forget The Lyrics the next night…
Don't Forget the Lyrics
1/10/08 - 6.7 Million Viewers (2.3 Mil for
18-49) (Gray's Anatomy Season Finale)
1/17/08 - 8.77 Million Viewers (3.4 Mil for 18-49) (Gray's Anatomy Goes
into Repeat mode)
1/24/08 - NO AIRING
1/31/08 - 10 Million Viewers (3.2 Mil for 18-49) (LOST New Season
Debuts)
2/7/08 - 8.57 Million Viewers (3.1 Mil for 18-49) (REPEAT)
2/14/08 - NO AIRING
2/21/08 - 12.52 Million Viewers (4.8 Mil for 18-49) (BOYZ II MEN and
Leadout of American Idol)
2/28/08 - 14.56 Million Viewers (5.2 Mil for 18-49) (Leadout of American
Idol)
3/6/08 - 10.57 Million Viewers (9.8 Mil for 18-49)
…you’d be wrong. What happened? No Boyz II Men for one, but you did have
Omarosa's press agent talk about how she would be on the Today Show on
Friday - which means that she would be fired on tonight's Apprentice.
Did that bring people in?
Celebrity Apprentice
1/3/08 - 11 Million Viewers (4.5 Mil
for 18-49)
1/10/08 - 8.3 Million Viewers (3.9
Mil for 18-49) (Gray's Anatomy Season Finale)
1/17/08 - 8.99 Million Viewers (3.9
Mil for 18-49) (Gray's Anatomy Goes into Repeat mode)
1/24/08 - 8.87 Million Viewers (3.7
Mil for 18-49) (Gray's Anatomy Goes into Repeat mode)
1/31/08 - 6.87 Million Viewers (2.7
Mil for 18-49) (LOST New Season Debuts)
2/7/08 - 8.66 Million Viewers (3.3
Mil for 18-49) (LOST)
2/14/08 - 9.09 Million Viewers (3.7
Mil for 18-49) (LOST)
2/21/08 - 8.03 Million Viewers (3.2 Mil for 18-49) (LOST) (Vs. an Idol
Lead-in)
2/28/08 - 7.62 Million Viewers (3.1 Mil for 18-49) (LOST) (Vs. an Idol
Lead-in)
3/6/08 - 8.82 Million Viewers (3.5 Mil for 18-49) (LOST) (Vs. an Idol
Lead-in) - Bye Bye, Omarosa
Well, sort of. It did stop the bleeding, but
you can't really attribute the small raise to that. But since Omarosa
will probably take credit for it, who are we to judge?
Survivor
2/7/08 - 13.87 Million Viewers (4.8 Mil for 18-49)
2/14/08 - 13.12 Million Viewers (4.5 Mil for 18-49)
2/21/08 - 12.55 Million Viewers (4.0 Mil for 18-49) (AGAINST IDOL)
2/28/08 - 12.47 Million Viewers (4.2 Mil for 18-49) (AGAINST IDOL)
3/6/08 - 12.58 Million Viewers (4.0 Mil for 18-49) (AGAINST IDOL)
And yet, despite Idol, Survivor's numbers
actually go up. It's interesting that the favorites are controlling the
action - but the ones who will be on the outer fringe once all of the
fans are gone also are aware of who they are. This could be a very
interesting merge...

The Price is Right
2/22/08 - 9.36 Million Viewers (2.5 Mil
for 18-49)
2/29/08 - 9.47 Million Viewers (2.2 Mil for 18-49)
3/7/08 - 10.33 Million Viewers (2.5 Mil for 18-49)
Oh look. It's another million dollar
giveaway. Sure, the numbers went up, but I don't think it was because of
that. I think that Drew Carey has finally found his way and the numbers
show it. Of course, the fact that a certain other show competing against
them is as attractive as Kevin Federline wearing a dress has something
to do with that...
Amne$ia
2/22/08
- 7.55 Million Viewers (2.5 Mil
for 18-49)
2/29/08 -
5.1 Million Viewers (1.4 Mil for 18-49)
3/7/08 - 4.7 Million Viewers (1.6 Mil for
18-49)
And here is said show. I don't think that
even Dennis Miller wearing a dress is going to help. It's obviously not
getting a renewal. The only question now is if it will complete it's run
of episodes before being yanked (my money is on yes, but barely).

Oprah's Big Give
3/2/08 - 15.55 million viewers (5.3 mil for
18-49)
3/9/08 - 11.83 million viewers (4.1 mil for
18-49)
Apparently, Oprah's power isn't to make
people keep watching her show, as it drops almost 30% from last week.
It's a great concept that gets ruined by the format.
Here Come the Newlyweds
3/2/08 - 10.34 million viewers (4.1 mil for
18-49)
3/9/08 - 8.9 million viewers (3.6 mil for 18-49)
And as Oprah falls, so do the newlyweds.
They actually lose less of a percentage than Oprah (15%), but the show
is still awful. Unfortunately, an Oprah-powered 8.9 will be good enough
to be deemed a 'hit'. Yuck.
Big Brother 9
2/17/08 - 6.73 Million Viewers (2.2 Mil for 18-49)
2/24/08 - 5.72 Million Viewers (2.2 Mil for 18-49)
3/2/08 - 6.17 Million Viewers (2.3 Mil for 18-49)
3/9/08 - 6.48 Million Viewers (2.2 Mil for 18-49)
Maybe the season of Big Brother will be
better if America votes back in the mime with a bottle of Crazy Glue.
Please?

Deal or No Deal
1/7/08 - 10.93 Million Viewers
1/14/08 - 15.0 Million Viewers (5.0 Mil for 18-49)
1/21/08 - 14.13 Million Viewers (4.4 Mil for 18-49)
1/28/08 - NO SHOW
2/4/08 - 12.7 Million Viewers (4.4 Mil for 18-49)
2/11/08 - 13.0 Million Viewers (4.2 Mil for 18-49)
2/18/08 - 16.85 Million Viewers (5.2 Mil for 18-49)
2/25/08 - 15.33 Million Viewers (4.2 Mil for 18-49) (Million Dollar
Mission Finale)
3/3/08 - 10.80 Million Viewers (3.1 Mil for 18-49) (Against The Royal
Family & at 9pm)
3/10/08 - 11.64 Million Viewers (3.0 Mil for 18-49) (9pm)
Maybe a 9pm slot is better for the show.
Regardless, an 11 is nice territory to have and it's one of the few
shows NBC can count on.
My Dad is Better Than your Dad
2/18/08 - 9.82 Million Viewers (3.5 Mil for 18-49)
2/25/08 - 7.81 Million Viewers (2.8 Mil for 18-49)
3/3/08 - 7.27 Million Viewers (2.4 Mil for 18-49)(Against The Royal
Family)
3/10/08 - 6.86 Million Viewers (2.1 Mil for 18-49) (8pm)
It doesn't really matter where you put this show. When it's season ends,
we can all count on NBC taking the show and putting it in the proverbial
woodchipper.
The Bachelor - Where Are They Now?
3/10/08 - 7.71 Million Viewers (2.6 Mil for
18-49)
Especially when it loses to The Bachelor.
How can you lose to a Bachelor recap show? NBC should yank MDIBTYD just
for losing to Jesse Palmer. Boooooo.
The Pussycat Dolls Present: Girl-icious
2/18/08 - 1.77 Million Viewers (0.9 Mil for 18-49)
2/25/08 - 1.72 Million Viewers (0.8 Mil for 18-49)
3/3/08 - 1.69 Million Viewers (0.9 Mil for 18-49)
3/10/08 - 1.68 Million Viewers (0.8 Mil for 18-49)
And while MDIBTYD is walking out the door, take The Pussycats with you.
Maybe they will - the show is about to get moved. Not that it will
matter much...

American Idol
1/15/08 - 33.24 Million Viewers (13.8 Mil for 18-49)
1/22/08 - 29.05 Million Viewers (11.7 Mil for 18-49)
1/29/08 - 28.0 Million Viewers (11.0 Mil for 18-49)
2/5/08 - 27.79 Million Viewers (11.2 Mil for 18-49)
2/12/08 - 29.87 Million Viewers (12.2 Mil for 18-49)
2/19/08 - 28.84 Million Viewers (11.2 Mil for 18-49)
2/26/08 - 28.45 Million Viewers (11.0 Mil for 18-49)
3/4/08 - 28.28 Million Viewers (10.45 Mil for 18-49)
3/11/08 - 29.33 Million Viewers (10.8 Mil for 18-49)
You like the Top 12. This is the 3rd best
overall viewership rating since the very first week of the show. And we
all know what happens when the numbers here go up...
The Biggest Loser 5
1/1/08 - 8.5-12.72 Million Viewers
1/8/08 - 8.48-12.13 Million Viewers
(5.2 Mil for 18-49)
1/15/08 - 7.28 Million Viewers (3.0
Mil for 18-49) (IDOL Premiere)
1/22/08 - (AGAINST IDOL (8-9)) 7.01
Million Viewers (2.9 Mil for 18-49)
1/22/08 - (NOT AGAINST IDOL (9-10))
10.87 Million Viewers (4.5 Mil for 18-49)
1/29/08 - (AGAINST IDOL (8-9)) 6.8
Million Viewers (2.7 Mil for 18-49)
1/29/08 - (NOT AGAINST IDOL (9-10))
9.7 Million Viewers (3.9 Mil for 18-49)
2/5/08 - 7.9 Million Viewers (3.2 Mil
for 18-49)
2/12/08 - 7.47 Million Viewers (3.0
Mil for 18-49)
2/19/08 - 8.15 Million Viewers (3.4
Mil for 18-49)
2/26/08 - 8.07 Million Viewers (3.1
Mil for 18-49)
3/4/08 - 8.65 Million Viewers (3.6
Mil for 18-49)
3/11/08 - 7.66 Million Viewers (3.0
Mil for 18-49)
…all the other numbers everywhere else go
down, starting with TBL. Despite the drop, it's still turning in some of
the best numbers in the history of the series, so you better believe NBC
will renew them.
Big Brother
2/12/08 - 7.3 Million Viewers (2.7
Mil for 18-49)
2/19/08 - 5.42 Million Viewers (2.0
Mil for 18-49)
2/26/08 - 6.74 Million Viewers (2.6
Mil for 18-49)
3/4/08 - 6.65 Million Viewers (2.6
Mil for 18-49)
3/11/08 - 5.92 Million Viewers (2.1
Mil for 18-49)
Remember the small growths of the past 2
weeks? That's because they didn't directly compete with Idol. Now they
do and back drops the number, like Horton the elephant going down a
greased pole.
Beauty and the Geek
3/11/08 - 1.88 Million Viewers (0.9 Mil for 18-49)
Uh oh. That is a really bad opening rating, garnered because 1. The CW's
ratings have been down for all shows, 2. People hated the ending of last
season, where people called in to vote, 3. People have just as much
hated the premise of beauty vs. geek. and 4. instead of putting it up
where Girli-culous is and shoring up that spot. The CW decided to
idiotically put it up against American Idol. Whichever brain surgeon
thought that was wise should be brained with a lap top.
So that ends this week in number-ville, with the good shows gaining
numbers and the bad shows losing audience. What will happen next week
when there's less Idol to go around, and more Bachelors and Dancing?
We'll find out in 7 days.
Gordon Pepper can't dance. He'd be perfect for Dancing with the Stars.
