Millions and Models and Miller... Oh, My!
February 2
8

So the play on the letter 'M' may be a bit cheesy, but the idea is sound. The theme is the three new game shows that populate the airwaves this week. Drew Carey's Million Dollar Price is Right, Tyra Bank's America's Next Top Model, and Dennis Miller's Amne$ia are all looking to make an impact. Do any of them succeed? And if so, was it for the better or worse for their network? And how did other shows starting with 'M' - My Dad is Better Than Your Dad and Moment of Truth - fare? We find out as we see what the numbers have in store for us this week…

Wednesday, February 20, 2008
American Idol
1/16/08 - 30.28 Million Viewers (12.6 Mil for 18-49)
1/23/08 - 27.75 Million Viewers (11.1 Mil for 18-49)
1/30/08 - 25.3 Million Viewers (9.9 Mil for 18-49)
2/6/08 - 26.02 Million Viewers (10.5 Mil for 18-49)
2/13/08 - 24.59 Million Viewers (9.8 Mil for 18-49)
2/20/08 - 28.67 Million Viewers (11.1 Mil for 18-49)

Apparently, you guys like the people in the Top 24 this year. The ratings rebound quite nicely, and those ratings are right on par from last year. FOX executives have to be happy with that number. However, if the numbers go up here, than they will go down on other shows…

Deal Or No Deal
1/2/08 - 12.2 Million Viewers
1/9/08 - 13.2 Million Viewers (3.5 Mil for 18-49)
1/16/08 - 11.83 Million Viewers (3.1 Mil for 18-49) (IDOL Week #1)
1/23/08 - 13.76 Million Viewers (3.7 Mil for 18-49) (IDOL Week #2)
1/30/08 - 9.8 Million Viewers (2.4 Mil for 18-49) (Repeat)
2/6/08 - 8.1 Million Viewers (1.8 Mil for 18-49) (Repeat)
2/13/08 - 10.99 Million Viewers (2.7 Mil for 18-49) (Non-Repeat)
2/20/08 - 8.93 Million Viewers (2.1 Mil for 18-49)

And here would be one of said shows. You can see why they are saving the finale of the Million Dollar Mission to Monday (against no competition) instead of Wednesday against big, bad, Idol.

America's Next Top Model
2/20/08 -3.8 Million Viewers (1.9 Mil for 18-49)
The numbers have been down across the board at the CW, and sticking this up against Idol won't help. It's a 20% drop in ratings since last season - and they weren't up against AI. Still, look for the numbers to rebound once Idol Wednesdays turns into a results show instead of a performance show.

Big Brother
2/13/08 - 5.81 Million Viewers (2.1 Mil for 18-49) (Non-Repeat)
2/20/08 - 5.24 Million Viewers (1.9 Mil for 18-49) (Non-Repeat)

Note to CBS: Don't use the couples concept again. Ever. The contestants are awful, and the show is making more headlines for what's going on when the show ISN'T airing. Calling special ed kids retards? Bad.

American Idol
2/21/08 - 23.17 Million Viewers (8.4 Mil for 18-49)
We see now why FOX wanted Idol to show up on Thursday nights, land of the cash cow. But seeing that it only scores 23.17 against tougher competition, we also see why Idol doesn't permanently make the jump to Thursdays. And when you have 5th grader holding its own in the time slot, there's really no reason to.

Survivor
2/7/08 - 13.87 Million Viewers (4.8 Mil for 18-49)
2/14/08 - 13.12 Million Viewers (4.5 Mil for 18-49)
2/21/08 - 12.55 Million Viewers (4.0 Mil for 18-49) (AGAINST IDOL)

Amazingly enough, Survivor didn't take the Idol beat-down that most of the competing shows did. That's good news for Jeff Probst and company as they continue to air one of the more intrigiuing seasons of this series.

Don't Forget the Lyrics
1/10/08 - 6.7 Million Viewers (2.3 Mil for 18-49) (Gray's Anatomy Season Finale)
1/17/08 - 8.77 Million Viewers (3.4 Mil for 18-49) (Gray's Anatomy Goes into Repeat mode)
1/24/08 - NO AIRING
1/31/08 - 10 Million Viewers (3.2 Mil for 18-49) (LOST New Season Debuts)
2/7/08 - 8.57 Million Viewers (3.1 Mil for 18-49) (REPEAT)
2/14/08 - NO AIRING
2/21/08 - 12.52 Million Viewers (4.8 Mil for 18-49) (BOYZ II MEN and Leadout of American Idol)

It could have been because it lead out of American Idol or because Boyz II Men were on the show, but this episode had the highest ratings of the Spring season. As for said group, not only did they sing well (which was to be expected), but they actualy played the game well (which was not to necessarily be expected) - albeit with Wayne Brady's help with the lyrics at the beginning. BTW, props to the show for telling the audience that B2M were going to be guaranteed $25,000 and will be helped to that point if need be - that's a much more refreshing disclainer than to see a celebrity in the Millionaire Hot Seat get screamed the right answers at by their fellow celebrities and Regis ignoring what's going on.

The Price is Right
2/22/08 -  9.36 Million Viewers (2.5 Mil for 18-49)

And the Drew bomb did exactly what most people thought it would do - dominate the evening and become the most watched program on Friday night. One of the things that I found interesting is that the show was mostly watched by the 50 and over crowd - only a 2.5 demographic from the 18-49 set. Still, CBS has to be pleased with that number. What will NBC be when they see their slate of programming?

1 vs. 100
1/4/08 - 8.59 Million Viewers
1/11/08 - 7.69 Million Viewers (1.9 Mil for 18-49)
1/18/08 - 7.16 Million Viewers (1.8 Mil for 18-49)
1/25/08 - 8.44 Million Viewers (2.2 Mil for 18-49) (Unopposed)
2/1/08 - 7.87 Million Viewers (2.0 Mil for 18-49)
2/8/08 - 7.1 Million Viewers (1.7 Mil for 18-49) (Unopposed)
2/15/08 - 7.54 Million Viewers (1.8 Mil for 18-49) (Unopposed)
2/22/08 - 7.55 Million Viewers (2.1 Mil for 18-49) (TPIR DEBUTS)

Actually, they should be very pleased. 1 Vs. 100 not only not goes down, but they slide up a bit against TPIR. Is the 7.55 good enough for renewal? I don't know, but shows have been renewed for less. Time will tell…

Amne$ia
2/22/08
- 7.55 Million Viewers (2.5 Mil for 18-49)

The good news is that the show didn't slid at all from 1 vs. 100. The bad news is that #1. It has to go up against TPIR next week and #2, and even more important, the show sucks. Can Dennis Miller single-handedly save this show. I think the general audience may have amnesia at this same time next week…

The Academy Awards
29.16 million viewers (9.8 mil for 18-49)

The number may look impressive, but it's not - it's one of the lowest rated telecasts ever. And the numbers shrank as the night progressed, as it dropped to 25 million and change for the last 30 minutes of the show. So by the end, more people watched Garrett Haley sing than tuned in to see what this year's best movie was. Think about it.

Big Brother 9
2/17/08 - 6.73 Million Viewers (2.2 Mil for 18-49)
2/24/08 - 5.72 Million Viewers (2.2 Mil for 18-49)

Not much to say here. It was going to take a hit against the Academy Awards. The real story will be next week to see if it takes another hit.

Deal or No Deal
1/7/08 - 10.93 Million Viewers
1/14/08 - 15.0 Million Viewers (5.0 Mil for 18-49)
1/21/08 - 14.13 Million Viewers (4.4 Mil for 18-49)
1/28/08 - NO SHOW
2/4/08 - 12.7 Million Viewers (4.4 Mil for 18-49)
2/11/08 - 13.0 Million Viewers (4.2 Mil for 18-49)
2/18/08 - 16.85 Million Viewers (5.2 Mil for 18-49)
2/25/08 - 15.33 Million Viewers (4.2 Mil for 18-49) (Million Dollar Mission Finale)

So the MDM is over - and no one won it. The numbers drew very nicely for the show, but what's going to happen once we only have one Million Dollar Case in the mix instead of 13?

My Dad is Better Than your Dad
2/18/08 - 9.82 Million Viewers (3.5 Mil for 18-49)
2/25/08 - 7.81 Million Viewers (2.8 Mil for 18-49)

Uh-oh. Any time a show drops over 20%, it's not good. Keep in mind that Gladiators, though fading out at the end of it's run, never dipped under an 8.4. This is under an 8. Not good news for the new show.

The Moment of Truth
8.59 million; (3.6 for A18-49)
A mixed bag for TMOT. The 8.59 million is the lowest rating yet for the show (and shows us what FOX will get with it if they put it up post-Idol), but the number is also better that what Prison Break has been drawing in the past or what the Sarah Connor Chronicles has been drawing currently (which is around 7.2). An 8.5 away from Idol means to me that the show is going to stick around for awhile - whether you like it or not.

The Pussycat Dolls Present: Girl-icious
2/18/08 - 1.77 Million Viewers (0.9 Mil for 18-49)
2/25/08 - 1.72 Million Viewers (0.8 Mil for 18-49)

And most people don't like this. Albeit it didn't drop much, but when you're at a 1.7, there's not a heck of a lot to drop. How have reailty shows searching for the next girl groups fared? Let's see…Pop Stars, The TLC Revival, Girlicious…you see where I'm getting at here?

American Idol
1/15/08 - 33.24 Million Viewers (13.8 Mil for 18-49)
1/22/08 - 29.05 Million Viewers (11.7 Mil for 18-49)
1/29/08 - 28.0 Million Viewers (11.0 Mil for 18-49)
2/5/08 - 27.79 Million Viewers (11.2 Mil for 18-49)
2/12/08 - 29.87 Million Viewers (12.2 Mil for 18-49)
2/19/08 - 28.45 Million Viewers (11.0 Mil for 18-49)

Despite the media trying to find anything to slow Idol down, The show keeps strumming along just fine. Notice that the numbers for the men are higher than the numbers for the women (29.87 Vs. 28.67). Coincidence? I think not. We'll see if that turns into a trend, but if it does, the men will have the edge once we get to the Round of 12.

The Biggest Loser 5
1/1/08 - 8.5-12.72 Million Viewers
1/8/08 - 8.48-12.13 Million Viewers (5.2 Mil for 18-49)
1/15/08 - 7.28 Million Viewers (3.0 Mil for 18-49) (IDOL Premiere)
1/22/08 - (AGAINST IDOL (8-9)) 7.01 Million Viewers (2.9 Mil for 18-49)
1/22/08 - (NOT AGAINST IDOL (9-10)) 10.87 Million Viewers (4.5 Mil for 18-49)
1/29/08 - (AGAINST IDOL (8-9)) 6.8 Million Viewers (2.7 Mil for 18-49)
1/29/08 - (NOT AGAINST IDOL (9-10)) 9.7 Million Viewers (3.9 Mil for 18-49)
2/5/08 - 7.9 Million Viewers (3.2 Mil for 18-49)
2/12/08 - 7.47 Million Viewers (3.0 Mil for 18-49)
2/19/08 - 8.15 Million Viewers (3.4 Mil for 18-49)
2/26/08 - 8.07 Million Viewers (3.1 Mil for 18-49)

The show is rumbling right along, getting decent numbers despite going up against Idol. The fact that you have a likable cast this year also helps.

Big Brother
2/12/08 - 7.3 Million Viewers (2.7 Mil for 18-49)
2/19/08 - 5.42 Million Viewers (2.0 Mil for 18-49)
2/26/08 - 6.74 Million Viewers (2.6 Mil for 18-49)

How exactly did Big Brother gain a ratings point? I'll attribute it to the fact that at 9:30pm, it was out of half of American Idol's crossfire (9:30-10pm). And anything out of Idol's fire will assuredly do better than going up against it.

So for this week, Drew Carey makes a splash. Tyra Banks does ok, and Dennis Miller…the jury is out.

Next week, we follow those trends, and we introduce a new player into the game - OPRAH.  Miss Winfrey's Big Give comes into the picture, and join us in 7 days to see what their big get.
