Round of 3/Round of
2
August 16
This season on MasterChef, there have
been stunning highs and deep lows. And all of it was to get to this
point... One final round with three competitors - a former beauty queen
from Delaware, a stay-at-home dad from New England, and a restaurant
server from Southern California. The quarter-mill is on the line, as is
the title of MasterChef. Who will achieve cookery greatness? The finale
starts with... the players coming full circle.
MYSTERY BOX #8
As a reminder... Jennifer has won three
Mystery Boxes. Adrien has two. Christian won the first.
Inside the box.... We started with a
chicken... We might as well end with one.
One hour... another chicken. You will
have full access to the pantry. Winner gets a huge advantage going into
the final Elimination Test.
- Christian Collins: Bacon-Wrapped
Chicken with French Onion Sauce
- Adrien Nieto: Braised Chicken Thigh with Acorn Squash & Asparagus on
Rice
- Jennifer Behm: Bacon-Wrapped Chicken with Apples & Jalapeno
The weakest chicken dish... Jennifer's.
The winner of this Mystery Box... A
unanimous decision... ADRIEN! His advantage... in a moment. But first,
to the pantry.
ELIMINATION TEST #8: Joe Bastianich's
Favorite Ingredients
The choices...
- Veal cuts
- Mushrooms
- Fresh octopus
As the advantage, Adrien will pick first;
Christian second. Adrien will pick... the OCTOPUS. He's cooked it
before, PLUS he doesn't want Christian to have it. Christian picks the
veal. Jennifer is left with the mushrooms, which would be problematic if
she didn't grow up outside Kennett Square, PA... the Mushroom Capital of
America.
There's ONE MORE THING. GUESS WHO'S
BACK.... that's right, the 15 people you had to clobber in order to get
to where you are. They will be your peanut gallery.
This dish will decide who is going into
the final and who's going to join the gallery.
One dish... one hour... TWO spots in the
final. And all they have are what they got from the pantry.... Relevant.
Because halfway in, Christian forgets flour. Will anyone lend him that?
Nope. So he's going to continue without it. And without the shanks,
which have yet to cook through.
Jennifer is switching gears from a
pappardelle to a ravioli with egg yolk inside.
The dishes that will either send you to
the final... or doom you to being "so close yet so far".
- Adrien: Pan-Seared Octopus with Saffron
Rice and Watercress Salad. Incredibly beautiful on the plate...
Disappointment: not the best rice. Octopus is perfect.
- Christian: Veal Osso Buco with
Vegetable Medley and Mashed Potatoes. Joe replates the dish for the rest
of the judges. The cook on the veal is good and the mash is perfect, but
it's a little rudimentary for semifinal caliber.
- Jennifer: Mushroom and Egg Ravioli with
Mushroom Ragout. After Gordon calls her one crazy (^_^), the dish really
works, but it needs a couple of finishing-off points, like parmesan or
seasoning. Pasta is a bit under, while the mushroom flavor is really on
point.
But overall, the judges have selected the
correct final three...
Who moves onto the final and who goes
home? The winners of this Elimination Test... ADRIEN and JENNIFER!
Sorry, Christian, but in this competition, close gets you third place
and nothing else.
THE FINAL CHALLENGE: Jennifer Behm vs. Adrien
Nieto
Joining the fallen in the gallery, the
family and loved ones of the two finalists. Okay, say your goodbyes, we
have to decide who wins this thing.
You have two hours to make superlative
appetizers, entrees, and desserts. The best will win $250,000.
Good luck... and MAY THE BEST HOME COOK
WIN!
Jennifer's starting with a vegetable
puree and scallops, tying into her entree of stuffed quail. Her dessert:
poached pears and cider apples. It's an interesting menu with a classic
restaurant flair.
Adrien is going to counter with prawn
taquitos, beer-braised short ribs with chocolate, and a
chocolate/passion fruit/blood orange tart. Two contrasting menus... and
it's so close right now.
The winner will have the best menu
overall - taste, conceptualization, originality, and presentation. Leave
nothing on the table.
Jennifer is using a quail that she's
never cooked before. Adrien is using chilies in all of his dishes and
chocolate in two. His cake... ends up falling flat. Meanwhile Jennifer
is running around looking for tools. When you can't plan... Improvise.
And the countdown to a winner begins in
five... four... three... two... one... STOP! You've done as much as you
can do in this competition, and you're better people for it. Now it's
all about the judges.
APPETIZERS
- Adrien: Spot Prawn Taquitos with Avocado Sauce, Masago & Microgreens.
Finessed the presentation. Flavors are bright... maybe too much so, as
it overpowers the prawns. The idea is smart, though.
- Jennifer: Pan Seared Scallops with Quail Egg, Creamed Corn & Pea
Puree. Perfect sear on the scallop, juicy in the middle. The plating
doesn't match the idea of eating. Meanwhile, the adductor muscle in the
scallop is not removed. The sweetness of the corn matches the scallop.
ENTREES
- Adrien: Beer-Braised Short Ribs with Cauliflower-Parsnip Puree and
Rainbow Chard. Again, great plating. Great flavor throughout. The
flavors work beautifully, the texture comes out. An excellent dish.
- Jennifer: Stuffed Quail with Creamy Potatoes & Spinach. Very bold move
to braise the quail first. It's stuffed perfectly and beautifully. The
flavor is delicious, absolutely spot on on all counts.
DESSERTS
- Adrien: Flourless Chocolate Cake infused with Blood Orange, Passion
Fruit, and Chipotle. It's drier, crying for more of the fruit infusion.
Everything that the entree was... this is not. The torte does not
impress anyone.
- Jennifer: Braised Pear with Poached Apples and Mascarpone. It has a
lot of acidity and pop, but it leaves a little to be desired. The judges
wonder if it even counts as a dessert. It doesn't jump on the palate.
This could be the straw that broke the camel's back.
On the whole, both cooks raised the bar
for future competitors... But there can only be ONE winner...
... the winner....
... of the $250,000...
... and the title of America's next
MasterChef...
.... is....
....
....
....
....
....
....
....
.... JENNIFER BEHM!
And cue the Moet showers! Both cooks
certainly deserved to be there, but in the end, Jennifer ekes out the
win.
