Round of 15
June 27
Last time, the cooks headed to the
kitchen of the Los Angeles Times, where they hoped to make news as the
best lunch ever. For someone with a lot of moxie, Max's team didn't have
the skills to back it up, forcing them into their first Pressure Test.
And on the back of some poorly received ravioli, Tony was sent home.
Much to Max's delight.
MYSTERY BOX #2
In the Mystery Box today... Rack of New
Zealand lamb, peaches, Romanesco cauliflower, fava beans, feta, white
rice, Thai chilies, tarragon, creme fraiche, pie crust, heavy cream, and
eggs.
One hour... one dish. Selection of the
top three will be based on presentation.
The WORST dish of the lot... Jennifer
Behm's rack of lamb. It's so bad (HOW BAD WAS IT?)... It wasn't even
COOKED. Raw lamb is a disaster. In fact, were this an elimination round,
Joe would send Jennifer out on her ass right now.
The top three...
- Alejandra Schrader: Curried Rack of
Lamb with Peach Chutney & Cauliflower Steak
- Adrien Nieto: Farmers Market Lamb with Cauliflower Puree
- Tracy Kontos: Sweet & Salty Lamb & Feta
And the winner of this Mystery Box...
ADRIEN! His advantage... Adrien will control the main ingredient/style
of food in...
ELIMINATION TEST #2: Desserts
Adrien's choice of ingredient will come
from the theme of... dessert. The three options available to him are...
coffee - acidity and bitterness, pineapple - sweet and sour, and nuts -
complicated and varied. He will choose the star of HIS dessert AND a
different ingredient for his competitors. Adrien picks for himself...
nuts. So you could say he's on the nuts. For the others... coffee.
Remember, one hour and a half, one
stunning dessert. All of the dishes will be taste-tested. GO SHOPPING!
After five minutes in the pantry, we
start the cooking. After 90, we finish the cooking. Let's see who's
sweet on dessert... and who's hitting a few sour notes. And who, like
Christine, is panicking.
- Adrien Nieto: Chocolate Nut Torte with
Berry Coulis, a squandered advantage
- Christine Corley: Chocolate Espresso Mousse (resurrected from a
creamy coffee tart that went totally wrong)
- Max Kramer: Torte du Crepes (no sweetness, no coffee, and Gordon
described it as a skin graft with caramel)
- Alejandra Schrader: Black Bottom Coffee Cream Tart (which is an
undercooled mess)
- Jennie Kelley: Coffee Infused Tart with Orange Blossom Cream (not
cooked all the way through)
This leads to a come-to-Jesus meeting
with the judges, where Gordon says he feels like giving up, but he isn't
because where would the show go after that? Hopefully, it ends here...
right now...
- Tracy Kontos: Espresso Chocolate
Flourless Cake with Coffee Caramel Sauce
- Esther Kang: Coffee Cheesecake
- Suzy Singh: Chocolate Coffee Brownie
- Jennifer Behm: Coffee Creme Brulee
- Alvin Schultz: Coffee-Filled Beignets with Coffee Chicory Pudding
... and after a run of spot-on desserts,
Alvin's beignets are bitter in the middle. Not good. At all.
Three of these made the bottom. Because
this is an hourlong show, they won't show all of them. But they will
show the top TWO... Esther's cheesecake and Tracy's cake. Both are safe and
will be team captains in the next challenge.
Bottom three... Jennie, Alvin, and Max.
At least one of them is going home today.
Leaving the MasterChef kitchen forever...
...IS....
... NOT Jennie. Alvin, hand in your
apron. He could be a courageous cook if he understood the basics.
As for Max... back in your station. Alvin
is going to be missed more than Max ever will, it looks like. We'll see
what tomorrow brings in the next Field Challenge.
