Round of 12
July 11
It was all vegetables all the time in the
Mystery Box, and that had Christian being beaten (though he wouldn't
readily admit it at the time). As bad as that was, Jennie Kelley was
sent packing after she failed to duplicate the reigning MasterChef's
signature dish. And then there were 12.
TEAM CHALLENGE #3: Hollywood Party
Today's Team Challenge takes place at a
Hollywood hotel's restaurant's rooftop. Not just any hotel... and not
just any restaurant. "Welcome... to the London West Hollywood." That's
right. We're at Gordon's. And they're going to be cooking for a
Hollywood party, conceptualizing different hors d'oeuvres. The courses:
vegetable, beef, and dessert.
TEAM BEN: Ben, Suzy, Tracy,
Jennifer, Esther, Christine
TEAM CHRISTIAN:
Christian, Adrien, Alejandra, Derrick, Giuseppe, Erryn
Ben's Angels vs. Alejandra's dudes. Most
votes wins, of course.
They have 90 minutes to cater a Hollywood
party, 600 hors d'oeuvres in 30 minutes. In Gordon Ramsay's own kitchen.
Good freaking luck.
On the blue side, Suzy's delivering
gazpacho, Christine has an open-faced Wellington, and Esther has
chocolate profiteroles. Ben is running democratically, BUT Christian is
all leader, all the time. He has gazpacho, beef tartare, and Italian
profiteroles.
Gordon and Graham enter the kitchen to
see what the captains are doing. Seems like vegetables and desserts are
the same, so someone's going to have to change it. And yet Adrien & Suzy
are going ahead with their gazpachos. Adrien is working on a duo for the
gazpacho. As for the beef, Christine, if you remember, blazed her way
through a filet Pressure Test. Beef Wellies should be no problem.
Giuseppe's profiteroles didn't work right, so he's going to a fruit
tart. Esther... same thing. And her second go at it... isn't better.
Giuseppe's dessert... better. Esther's...
not so much. Will she be third time lucky?
Meanwhile, the Reds are torching their
tartares (you supposed to do that?), Esther's profiteroles are FINALLY
ready for filling... but their filling is ruined. They need a new
dessert and they needed it YESTERDAY. They whip up macerated berries.
Good one. Not.
The menus are...
VEGETABLE
- RED: Duo of Gazpacho
- BLUE: Tomato Mint Gazpacho
WINNER: RED (64%)
... I know Carson Kressley isn't telling
me how to eat gazpacho.
MEAT
- RED: Torched Beef Tartare
- BLUE: Mini-Beef Wellington
WINNERS: BLUE (100%)
DESSERT
- RED: Berry & Mascarpone Tart
- BLUE: Fruit with Whipped Cream
Losers face a Pressure Test. Just a
reminder...
WINNER: ... with a count of 53-47...
REDS!
PRESSURE TEST #3: Layered Cake
The theme of this Pressure Test... a
stunning, delicious, eye-capturing... layered cake, based on textures,
taste, and visual impact. The teammates will have two hours to bake a
cake with a minimum of six layers of sponge. The worst of the lot will
be jettisoned from the MasterKitchen.
- Ben Starr: Pumpkin Carrot Cake with
Cream Cheese Frosting & Candied Hazelnuts
- Suzy Singh: Ganache & Pecan Cake with Chantilly Cream and Raspberry
- Tracy Kontos: Chiffon Cake with Sweet Basil & Citrus Infused Icing
- Jennifer Behm: Banana Split Cake with Strawberries, Chocolate &
Crushed Nuts
- Esther Kang: Lemon Raspberry Cake
- Christine Corley: Apricot Berry Cake with Hazelnut Liqueur
One of these cakes didn't make the cut.
Tracy, Jennifer, and Ben step forward...
THEY'RE SAFE. Esther, Christine, and Suzy are the bottom three...
Christine... IS SAFE.
Esther... IS OUT OF MASTERCHEF...
And Suzy is SAFE. FOR NOW.
That leaves us with 11. Next time, we
unleash the biggest Mystery Box EVER... and Joe unleashes his biggest
threat EVER.
