Say Goodbye
to Gabon
December 14
It's been another season full of twists
and turns in the story of eighteen Americans sent to a far-off wasteland
and given the challenge of surviving the elements and each other. Now
only the final five remain... Matty, the physical threat, Kenny, the
game master, Susie, the under-the-radar player, Bob, the challenge
winner, and Sugar, the holder of the Immunity Idol. In two hours, one of
them will take home a check with a 1 followed by six zeroes!
Night 36: "That was a perfectly executed
play of a Hidden Immunity Idol"
... except Crystal had the votes and she
would've gone away anyway. Sugar says that she's never felt so powerful
in her life. Kenny feels a little bit betrayed, as he feels that Bob has
stung him in the back about the Immunity Idol. What happened that night
wasn't "part of the deal". "He's not a man of his word." Only problem
with that is that Bob saw through that plan.
Day 37: "Kenny thinks we're in an
alliance..."
Bob and Sugar start thinking about taking
out Kenny and Susie. When she knocked Crystal out, Kenny started getting
suspicious. She tells Kenny that if Bob wins today, it's likely that
Sue's going home. Kenny thinks that Sugar has no alliance with Susie, so
he's going into the final three with her, right?
Meanwhile, we get mail.
"A tribe of many colors,
Red, yellow, white, black, and blue.
Each of you unique,
Like warriors when you're through.
An amazing chance you've got,
An amazing trip you're on
An amazing shot at a million bucks,
If you conquer amazing Gabon."
I-CHALLENGE: Amazing Warriors
Dig under a wall, make your way over a
plank, and navigate a maze with Gabonese huts. Inside three of them are
puzzle pieces. Grab them and head to the finish, one bag at a time. Once
you have all three, start working on your puzzle, a replica of a
Gabonese hut. First person to complete the puzzle wins Immunity.
Susie is the first under her wall AND
through the first maze of planks. Sugar's the first person to start on
the puzzle. But it's Bob who makes quick work of the puzzle. Who'll
finish first? ... BOB! Third straight!
And Susie's just... lost.
Kenny set himself up so well... He thinks
that Susie's going home tonight. Matty, on the other hand, decides that
we're going to tell her late when she has no chance of scrambling
together the votes. Susie and Matty talk about Kenny... Matty will
usually tell her something crucial, but she hasn't heard anything. This
is what happens when everyone's playing for themselves. "I definitely
feel nervous that I could go tonight."
Matty tells Sugar... "You and I no matter
what. Final result, you, me, and Kenny." Sugar thinks that Kenny's
dangerous to keep around, telling Bob about all of the plans that are
going on. Susie can't be trusted and Kenny's a known liar. No matter
what is done, Bob and Matty will vote with her.
Night 37: Tribal...
On the jury: Marcus, Charlie, Randy,
Corinne, and Crystal.
Bob is tied for a record for most
consecutive challenge wins. He just keeps working harder. Matty says
Bob's money. Kenny thinks that Bob is an outdoorsy person. Susie is a
little concerned that someone might want to get rid of her. She's not
making moves, and that makes her an outsider. Kenny thinks that he's
repaired a lot of damages, saying that Bob would back down on his deal.
Bob cites self-preservation, and that talking changed things. "It was
'if I help you, you help me', not 'if I help you, you stab me in the
back'." Kenny totally gets caught on it. And of course, no one buys the
defense he's giving.
Bob keeps Immunity.
Susie: KENNY - "I don't know if it's a
blindside. Could be me going home."
Kenny: SUSIE - "I'm really proud you got this far."
That's one a piece. The others...
Matty: KENNY
Sugar: KENNY
Bob: KEN
By a vote of 4-1, Kenny... THE TRIBE HAS
SPOKEN.
Day 38: "I see you being super
nervous."
It all depends on who wins today. The
only way to save Susie's butt is a win. What happens if she wins? Bob
goes. She's nervous because today will seal her fate. She may have a
shot at it.
Meanwhile, we get another mail...
"Congratulations Final Four. You have
done what 14 of your fellow tribesmen and women could not. Today you
will honor their memories.
"Go to Exile Island; there you will
find the torches of your fallen comrades. At each torch you will collect
a tribal mask of those who were voted out before you. Take them all to
the highest plateau and savanna and burn them in their honor, as they
each had a part in getting you to this point. You will then proceed to
your final Immunity Challenge."
From there, we pay our respects to the
fourteen who went before... Michelle... Gillian... Paloma... Jacquie...
GC... Kelly... Ace... Dan... Marcus... Charlie... Randy...Corinne...
Crystal... and Kenny.
A local tribe join the final four in
setting aloft their funeral pyre...
I-CHALLENGE: Stack the Deck
Using 200 wooden cards, build a house of
cards ten feet high. First one to do it wins the final Immunity.
If no one does so in 30 minutes, then the closest to do so will win.
Bob gets tumbled with ten seconds... as
does Sugar. Susie doesn't want to risk it, so she stops at about seven
feet... which is good enough. She will plead her case for a million.
Bob and Matty console each other. Sugar
sees no other option... Bob is going home tonight. Bob says "Never count
out anything." Susie asks about who would he bring to the final Tribal.
That causes Bob to snap a little, which gives Susie enough reason to
vote for him. The others suggest that she not talk about it for a while.
Sugar has an idea... Force a tiebreaker.
If Bob and her vote for Matty and Susie and Matty vote for Bob, that'll
do it. It's a tough choice for her, because she sees one person as a
brother figure and another as a father figure, and as you know, Sugar
recently lost her father.
That said, Bob brushes up on his
fire-making.
Night 38: Tribal...
On the jury: Marcus, Charlie, Randy,
Corinne, Crystal, and Kenny.
Susie's proud of herself for getting this
far, but Bob is vulnerable and uncomfortable. He thinks that he's a huge
threat, and there's only but a little scrambling that he can do. He'll
give it his best shot. Matty didn't feel the scrambling around camp as
he did around his own head. Sugar went out on a limb for her. There's no
way that he can vote for her. Bob says that Matty's well-like. Sugar
says that she would lose to both Bob and Matty. She has to choose
between one or the other. Matty looks at Sugar like a sister. Bob looks
at Sugar like a daughter. He is a father.. and a damn good one. Bob
hopes she make a good decision.
Susie keeps Immunity.
Matty: RUNAROUND BOB. "You've made a
major impact on my life, and I truly respect the game that you've
played."
Bob: MATTY. "With love for my friends."
Susie... votes for BOB, which leaves
Sugar... MATTY. Time for a tie-breaker. And as Bob counted on... it's
building fire. It's the moment Bob prepared for. One is going to the
jury, the other to the final three... and it will literally be
determined by trial by fire.
Winner... BOB! Matty... for the final
time in Gabon, THE TRIBE HAS SPOKEN. As for Susie, Bob, and Sugar, they
have gone as far as they will go on their own power.
Day 39: ... count the notches.
Susie can't believe it. All you have to
do is keep on trying. "If you try, you can make it. And here I am on Day
39. Isn't that crazy?"
One last tree mail with breakfast. Well,
no mail, just the breakfast. Well, brunch. Sugar is scared to death of
the jury. She had a hand in eliminating almost EVERYONE on the jury and
doesn't even expect ONE vote.
Bob builds his final gadget, a fiery
goodbye to the garden of Eden. With his tribal torch, he sets the camp
ablaze. He hopes that his behavior and his work is worth a million.
"That's how fast stuff comes and goes... Thirty-nine days... Done."
Night 39: Final Tribal Council.
The jury of seven who will decide the
winner consists of... Marcus... Charlie... Randy... Corinne....
Crystal... Kenny... and Matty.
Opening statements...
Susie: "I came into this just wanting to
try. I wanted to teach my students what it means to try, so it means a
lot to me just wanting to succeed. I'm not afraid to stand against Bob.
I am very confident."
Bob: "I played with gusto, my heart. I
played hard. My strategy was to use my survival skills to make my life
better. The only thing I did was outlast you. You people made this game
the most exciting adventure of my life."
Sugar: "I feel like I played the perfect
social game. I had to lie. That's part of the game. I think I played a
pretty darn good game for someone who... didn't know what she was doing.
I never sought out an alliance. I feel Bob deserved to be up here."
Now to the jury.
Charlie asks the ladies why should he
vote "the worst" the top of the totem pole? Susie knew she was going to
be underestimated. Sugar... doesn't know. Now for Bob... Was spooning
Charlie worth it? He didn't give a hoot.
Crystal calls Sue a coat-tail-rider. She
asks Bob what Sugar DIDN'T control him to do. He rode coattails on his
own accord. She asks Sugar why she voted her out. She called Crystal a
bully, going with her heart in the process.
Kenny asks Susie why he should give her
his vote. Susie really believed that she was an average ordinary
housewife. Kenny tells Sugar that she really scarred him. Sugar thought
that Kenny was a bigger threat. "For some reason, I don't believe you."
Kenny goes back to the deal. Bob became aware of an assassination
attempt on his life in the game.
Corinne asks Susie... "Will you agree to
have your vocal cords removed?" No. Corinne wants to see Nasty Bob. Bob
felt horrible about Sugar rubbing the fake Idol in Randy's face. The
only thing Corinne would vote to give Sugar is a handful of
anti-depressants. And Corinne gets the finger.
Marcus was surprised that Susie, as a
teacher, became a positive role model after playing "just a game".
Marcus asks Sugar if she would honor her father's memory with the money
(lung cancer). She would. He asks Bob about an example of being
responsible for his own decision. Bob says that he didn't have to
because everyone else made good decisions.
Randy asks Susie to elaborate on a moment
where she felt sorry for him. Susie didn't understand the way Randy
talked about him. "I wish I knew how I could help you." Randy asks Sugar
if she didn't know that he was joining the jury after she laughed about
the fake Idol. Sugar calls him a jerk. Bob is asked the same question...
He was going to use the idol to save himself, apologizing.
Matty's the closer. Susie is asked why
the other two are less deserving. Sugar's laughing and Bob's
congratulatory anger were reasons enough. Matty says that Sugar's
innocent persona was garbage. Sugar responds by telling about Kenny's
broken heart. Bob is asked why the other two are MORE deserving of the
million. "I don't think they are."
And now, for the final time... It's time
to vote. Remember, you're voting for a winner.
Matty: SUSIE. "You and I were friends
from day one. And we're friends on day 39. Spend it wisely."
Corinne: BOB P. CROWLEY. "You did an awesome job surviving in Africa.
I'm just not sure how you would survive in the real world."
Randy: (hidden) "ALL THREE OF YOU... KISS MY..." Okay, dude, family
show.
Jeff thanks the jury and the players for
a great season, and he makes the customary long journey to...
Tonight: CBS TELEVISION CITY, 7800
BEVERLY BLVD., LOS ANGELES, CA, 90036.
"I got some votes."
So far, we know it's 1-1. Here's the
reading...
BOB... SUSIE... SUSIE.... SUE... BOB...
BOB... The last vote is not for Sugar, which means we have a winner.
Pretty Boy Probst, it is all yours.
"And the winner of Survivor Gabon...
BOB!"
Congratulations to Bob Crowley, the 17th
winner of Survivor! But, now the question remains... How did he do it?
REUNION TIME!
"My strategy was to be needed. I'm almost
60 years old, and I beat out everybody. Life doesn't get better than
that." At 57, Bob is the oldest winner. He tried to be necessary,
friendly, and tried to play the game. His plan was to fly under the
radar for as long as possible. The fake idol saved his place in the
game. Bob collected beads from the ground. There used to be a whole
bunch on the Kota flag, so he took some, and relying on art lessons from
his mom, went to town. After that night's Tribal, Jeff went into the
fire and took what was left of the Idol to give back to him. The
reaction from his students... He has the loudest group of illiterate
Survivor fans in the state of Maine. He's managed to relate his
experiences to physics.
So what would've happened if Matty won
the tiebreaker? He would've won the million. Matty didn't even see the
tiebreaker coming. He thought he had it in the bag.
Cue plea from Jeff: if you find out that
you're going on Survivor, go to REI, buy a flint, and practice making
fire, because that cost Matty a million dollars.
Susie got three votes by playing under
the radar and getting lucky by winning Immunity. The deciding vote
turned out to be Randy. Why? "Easy. That cookie that didn't matter much.
They kept reminding me 'It's just a cookie.' It was a million dollar
cookie." Some people actually thank Sugar for the Randy's Cookie
incident. Now she has to leave the house with the makeup on.
What was it like to lose her father and
then play the game afterwards? It was a very hard game, and she's better
and stronger for it. So have she and Corinne made up since the jury
vote? "Obviously I feel sorry for her loss, but it was like being
stranded in Africa with a colicky baby." Was that her in real life? Yep.
She's actually angry that they didn't portray her more in a NEGATIVE
light! She has no regrets about the show.
Randy: "I will do my best despite hating
each and every one of you." Is that him? "100 percent." He is this
bitter curmudgeon. He used to be a fun, happy, likable guy. "You're
either born with the ability to like me, or you're not." His best
friend... his dog.
The highest IQ... Marcus. The second
highest... Randy. "The test has gotta be flawed with these Einsteins on
the front row." Pilot? "Used to be." Ironman? "Used to." Marathons?
"Used to." Engineering degree from Vanderbilt? "I cheated." Of all the
people he brought to the live show... "Six strangers. I never
met'em." He says, after 15 seasons, he should've waited until season 22.
Charlie, aka Mr. Nice Guy... is friends
with all of these guys! Randy and Corinne both have a good heart.
Question... is Crystal an Olympic gold
medalist? From 2004. (Trivia: she is a graduate of Pine Forest High, on
the OTHER side of Fayetteville, where I currently reside). Next
question... what happened? She couldn't do anything! "I am built to run
around a circle! Those challenges are hard." Dan took some ribbing, but
took it in stride. The important thing is that every decision you make
is a good one.
Kenny was billed as a "professional
gamer". He plays tournaments with video games all over the world, and
he's sponsored, so this is a profession for him. The connection to
Survivor... his mind game. His downfall... he got cocky. "Everyone in
Survivor is not a chess piece I could move. Everyone who's ever got
cocky ended up losing." Love life update... Girls are actually fancying
him. But he wants someone who wants him for him and not because he's on
Survivor (I hear Michelle's available).
Question... Is the accent real, Ace? He's
actually from Mississippi... but he was raised in London by British
parents, so yes, it's genuine.
The Sprint Player of the Season will win
$100,000. Top three are... Matty, Bob, and Sugar. Winner... BOB! That
brings his total winnings to $1.1 million.
Catching up with the rest of the crew...
Matty and Jaime are still engaged. We have a date. Paloma thinks that
she can do anything now. Kelly takes back the experience of playing with
all of these people. GC was looking for a Popeye's or something. His
stomach was hurting. All he did was look for something to eat. Jacquie
was completely detoxed from technology. And Gillian's just happy to be
here.
So now where is Survivor heading next?
One of the most rugged seasons yet... Tocantins in the highlands of
Brazil, with the only relief coming from the Rio Novo.
Plug for the Early Show, Survivor Auction
which will benefit Jeff's charity, the Serpentine Project, and
solicitation for Season 19.
We'll see if we have any more "morons
gone wild" as spring brings us "Survivor Tocantins: The Brazilian
Highlands"! We'll see you there!
