Finals: Choudhury/Cooke/Horn - Part 1
February
21
Last week, fifteen of the best and
brightest high-schoolers descended upon the Jeopardy! stage to show
the world who's got the best mental game. Nine of them outlasted the
rest and earned the right to compete in the semis. Now we come to the
climax, as three of them, Zia Choudhury, Rachel Cooke, and Rachel Horn,
compete for $75,000 and the title of 2008 Jeopardy! Teen
Champion, not to mention the bragging rights that go with the title.
This Winter Classic is
another standard two-week affair, advancing the winners of this week's
games as well as four wild-cards, high scorers among non-winners. All of
this week's players will receive at least $10,000 for making it this
far.
The first runner-up receives
$25,000 at least, while the second runner-up wins at least $15,000. As
always, any and all winnings accrued depends on how far up the ladder a
player goes.
And now, part 1...

So you're probably asking
yourself... What's up with "Steve"? Well, you probably notice that there's two
Rachels, so in an attempt to stave off confusion, Alex discovers that Rachel C.
has a nickname... Hence, we have Zia, Rachel... and Steve. That concludes the
contestant identification portion of the program. Now to the Jeopardy! round...

Zia's finding himself in unfamiliar territory... third place behind Rachel's
$3000 and "Steve's" $1200. But a familiar gambit... betting everything on
this: in the 1830s, he wrote, "'But he has nothing on at all,' said a little
child at last." "Who is Dickens?" Nope, Hans Christian Andersen, leaving him
with nothing.
(C-Note: Slight nitpick on $1000 Gamers Unite!.
The clue: this Japanese video game involves a sticky little ball that
players roll to grow it larger by picking up things. The given correct
response, "What is Katamari?", is not quite correct. The full name is "Katamari
Damacy." But no one got it and Zia lost on it, so this is just my trivial
mind talking.)

Daily Double #1: $2000 You Do The

Rachel and "Steve" are making this a two-woman race with Rachel at $13,200 and
"Steve" at $13,400. Zia has $3800. But it's all about Rachel now, as she bets
$500 on this: an $80 shirt reduced in price by 20% would cost this. Blanks on
$64, leaving her with $12,700.
Daily Double #2: $1600 Class Trip to Washington.
Rachel has $15,100 to "Steve's" $14,200 and Zia's $5000. She bets just $700
on this: a memorial on the National Mall bears the names of nearly 60,000
Americans who died in this war. "What is the Vietnam War?" Correct for
$15,800.

Correct response: who was Benjamin
Franklin?
Zia's response: who is Benjamin Franklin? RIGHT. Wager: all you can eat,
baby. Total: $18,000.
"Steve's" response: who is Ben Franklin? RIGHT. Wager: $5000. Total:
$18,400.
Rachel's response: who was B. Franklin? RIGHT. Wager: $8201. Total:
$26,801.
Rachel is
playing to win. Zia and "Steve"... just playing. Both
players need to put their heart into it tomorrow before
Rachel comes up with her silent-wind demeanor and
crushes them.
Scores going

We've got a trophy to give away next
time.
