Preliminaries: Casper/Luttmann/Cooke
February 15
Last week, fifteen of the best and
brightest high-schoolers descended upon the Jeopardy! stage to show
the world who's got the best mental game. Nine of them outlasted the
rest and have earned the right to compete in the semis. And in the end, one of them
will outlast the others for $75,000 and the title of 2008 Jeopardy! Teen
Champion, not to mention the bragging rights that go with the title.
This Winter Classic is
another standard two-week affair, advancing the winners of this week's
games as well as four wild-cards, high scorers among non-winners. All of
this week's players will receive at least $10,000 for making it this
far.
The first runner-up receives
$25,000 at least, while the second runner-up wins at least $15,000. As
always, any and all winnings accrued depends on how far up the ladder a
player goes.
First semifinal begins with....

Daily Double: $800 American
Literature. Rachel has $2000 less than Will, with $1400 to his $3400. Melissa
has $600. Rachel bids $1000 on this: this William Faulker novel opens with a
tale told by Benjy, an idiot. "What is 'The Sound and the Fury'?" Correct for
$2400.
At the end of the Jeopardy! round...
$7,600 |
$3,800 |
$6,800 |

Double Jeopardy! categories:
NAME THAT AMERICAN REVOLUTIONARY |
|
FUN WITH BALLET |
ANCIENT ROME |
ADJECTIVES |
"TEEN" ENTERTAINMENT |
Daily Double #1: $1200 Name That
American Revolutionary. Will leads with $13,200 against Melissa's $10,600 and
Rachel's $6400. He bets $2000 on this: he spoke of the American Revolution as
"the times that try men's souls". "Who is Washington?" Nope, it was Thomas
Paine, leaving him with $11,200, still leading, but by less.
Daily Double #2: $2000 Fun With
Ballet. Melissa trails in a close match with $12,200 against Will's $14,800 and
Rachel's $13,600. She bets $200 on this: some featherbrain in Moscow was the
first to stage this ballet, on March 4, 1977. "What is 'Swan Lake'?" Should've
gone bigger, Melissa. She's got $12,600.
At the end of the Double Jeopardy! Round...
$13,600 |
$13,200 |
$15,600 |
Will |
Melissa |
Rachel |
Now let's do some math...
- Melissa wins if she wagers between $401 and $9200 and the other two players
are wrong in both response and wager.
- Will wins if he wagers more than $12,800 and is correct, while Rachel misses.
(Classic Stratton's Dilemma)
- Rachel wins if she bets $11,601 and is right.
Final Jeopardy! category:
SHAKESPEAREAN HEROINES
|
THE NAME OF THIS HEROINE KNOWN
FOR HER FILIAL DEVOTION IS PROBABLY DERIVED FROM THE LATIN FOR "HEART" |
|
Correct response: who is Cordelia?
Melissa's response: who is Cordelia? RIGHT. Wager: all-in. Total:
$26,400.
Will's response: who is Hermione? WRONG. Wager: $12,801. Total:
$799.
Rachel's response: who is Cordelia? WRONG. Wager: $13,000. Total: $28,600.
FINALIST:
Rachel Cooke.
Not exactly the cleanest way to win it, but Rachel knew the category and had the edge in scoring, so we can't fault her for that. Still, she's going to need a little more strategy in order to last in the final.
Second semi tomorrow.
