Preliminaries: Horn/Lambert/Luttman
February 12
They're not old enough to
drink, but they're surely old enough to think. Fifteen of the best and
brightest high-schoolers have descended upon the Jeopardy! stage to show
the world who's got the best mental game. And in the end, one of them
will outlast the others for $75,000 and the title of 2008 Jeopardy! Teen
Champion, not to mention the bragging rights that go with the title.
This Winter Classic is
another standard two-week affair, advancing the winners of this week's
games as well as four wild-cards, high scorers among non-winners. All of
this week's players will receive $2500, while the semifinalists will be
guaranteed $5000 for their participation.
The first runner-up receives
$25,000 at least, while the second runner-up wins at least $15,000. As
always, any and all winnings accrued depends on how far up the ladder a
player goes.
So far, Zia Choudhury is the
only one guaranteed to return next week, and for our money, the favorite
to take it all. Who'll join him today?

Daily Double: $800 Word Origins.
Melissa has $600 to Rachel's $400. Janelle still on the donut. Melissa decides
to make it true, rather than bet the max. The clue: the name of this type of
reference work is from the Greek for "cyclical" (i.e., well-rounded) &
"education". "What is an encyclopedia?" Correct for $1200!

Daily Double #1: $1600 Firsts.
Rachel finds this one first with $15,000 against Janelle's $4000 and Melissa's
$5600. She bets $2000 on this: the first meeting of this international assembly
convened November 5, 1920. "What is the United Nations?" Too late. It's the
League of Nations, leaving her with $13,000.
Daily Double #2: $1600 Lasts. Rachel
finds this one last with $20,200 against Janelle's $4000 and Melissa's $8800.
She bets $4000 on this: the Battle of Castillon in 1453 was the last battle of
this war that began back in 1337. "What is the Hundred Years' War?" Right for
$24,200!

THIS CHARACTER SAYS, "IT'S
CHRISTMAS DAY! I HAVEN'T MISSED IT. THE SPIRITS HAVE DONE IT ALL IN ONE
NIGHT". |
|
Correct response: who is Ebenezer
Scrooge?
Janelle's response: who is Scrooge? RIGHT. Wager: $5600. Total: $11,200
Melissa's response: who is Scrooge? RIGHT. Wager: $9200. Total:
$18,400.
Rachel's response: who is Scrooge? RIGHT. Wager doesn't matter.
SEMI-FINALIST:
Rachel Horn.
Not the shellacking of
yesterday's show, but Rachel has emerged as a contender as well. And
don't count out Melissa or Janelle, as they were playing well for wild
cards.
Third quarterfinal tomorrow.
