Semifinals: Horn/Tallapragada/Faulkenberry
February
20

Last week, fifteen of the best and brightest high-schoolers descended upon the Jeopardy! stage to show the world who's got the best mental game. Nine of them outlasted the rest and have earned the right to compete in the semis. And in the end, one of them will outlast the others for $75,000 and the title of 2008 Jeopardy! Teen Champion, not to mention the bragging rights that go with the title.

This Winter Classic is another standard two-week affair, advancing the winners of this week's games as well as four wild-cards, high scorers among non-winners. All of this week's players will receive at least $10,000 for making it this far.

The first runner-up receives $25,000 at least, while the second runner-up wins at least $15,000. As always, any and all winnings accrued depends on how far up the ladder a player goes.

Rachel Cooke and Zia Choudhury await the winner of this match....

Todd Faulkenberry

Jeopardy! round...

HIGH SCHOOL THE LIBRARY THE GYM THE SCIENCE LAB CAFETERIA "AFTER" CLASS

Daily Double: $800 Science Lab. Naren is in the middle with $2000 to Rachel's $1200 and Todd's $3200. He bets $1400 on this: in 1935 the Russian government built him a new lab to continue his work on conditioned reflexes. "Who is Pavlov?" Correct for $3400 and the lead!

At the end of the Jeopardy! round...

$5,800 $6,200 $5,200
Rachel Naren Todd

Double Jeopardy! categories:

THE STAMP ACT THIS & THAT 3 CHEERS FOR CHEERLEADERS WO"RR"DS LET'S GO TO OHIO NO, I'M GOING TO THE ZOO

Daily Double #1: $1200 Wo"rr"ds. Todd has a change of score which puts him at $8000 to Naren's $9800, but right now, it's all about Rachel, her $10,200, and what she plans on doing with it. She bets $1800 on this: line of 525 of Alexander Pope's "Essay on Criticism" says, "to" do this "is human, to forgive, divine." "What is to err?" Correct for $12,000.

Video Daily Double #2: $2000 No, I'm Going to the Zoo. Naren has $14,200 against Rache's $16,800 and Todd's $10,000. He bets $2700 for the lead. The clue: it's the marsupial-inspired name of the desert rat seen here. "What is the opossum rat?" Nope, the kangaroo rat drops him to $11,500.

At the end of the Double Jeopardy! Round...

$16,800 $11,900 $12,800
Rachel Naren Todd

Close match. Let's see what needs to go down, thanks to our friends at J-archive.com...

- Naren wins if he bets at least $901 AND both Rachel and Todd bet against each other and lose.
- Todd wins if he bets more than $11,000 and Rachel misses.
- Rachel wins if she bets $8801 and is right.

Final Jeopardy! category: NOTABLE NAMES

AT HIS DEATH IN APRIL 1955, HIS BRAIN WAS PRESERVED & HIS ASHES SCATTERED IN THE DELAWARE RIVER

Correct response: who was Albert Einstein?

Naren's response: who was Albert Einstein? RIGHT. Wager: all you can eat, baby. Total: $23,800.
Todd's response: who is MacArthur? WRONG. Wager: $12,700. Total: $100.
Rachel's response: who was Einstein? RIGHT. Wager: $8801. Total: $25,601

FINALIST: Rachel Horn

No doubt Rachel is incredibly smart. That will serve her well in the final. She also has a silent-wind type mentality about strategy, enabling her to come from nowhere to take the top spot, which she did today.

And now, the reason why the next couple of days will be a little bit more difficult for Alex... Your final three are...

Two Rachels, a Zia and $75,000, next time.
