Semifinals: Choudhury/Green/Gill
February 19
Last week, fifteen of the best and
brightest high-schoolers descended upon the Jeopardy! stage to show
the world who's got the best mental game. Nine of them outlasted the
rest and have earned the right to compete in the semis. And in the end, one of them
will outlast the others for $75,000 and the title of 2008 Jeopardy! Teen
Champion, not to mention the bragging rights that go with the title.
This Winter Classic is
another standard two-week affair, advancing the winners of this week's
games as well as four wild-cards, high scorers among non-winners. All of
this week's players will receive at least $10,000 for making it this
far.
The first runner-up receives
$25,000 at least, while the second runner-up wins at least $15,000. As
always, any and all winnings accrued depends on how far up the ladder a
player goes.
Rachel Cooke awaits the winner of this match....

Video Daily Double: $1000
World Flags. Katie seems hellbent on playing spoiler with $3000 to Zia's $2000.
Hunter has $800. Zia makes it a true Daily Double. For $4000 or nothing...
Cuba's flag is called "La estrella solitaria", meaning this, like Texas's
nickname. "What is the Lone Star?" Correct for $4000!

NOT ONE, NOT 2, BUT 3 Os |
Daily Double #1: $2000 Not One, Not
2, But 3 Os. Hunter has a change of score which puts him at $8800 to Katie's
$8000, a far cry from Zia's $21,800, as he plays $6800 on this: in humans, any
of the threadlike bodies that carry the genes in a linear order. "What is a
chromosome?" Correct for $28,600.
Daily Double #2: $1600 Holidays &
Observances. Forget your score for a moment, Katie. Hunter has $10,000. Zia,
$28,600. You know what you have to do. You... just bet $2000? Here's the Daily
Double: if May Day falls on a Sunday, this holiday is the very next Sunday.
"What is ... Mother's Day?" Correct for $12,000.
At the end of the Double Jeopardy! Round...
$27,800 |
$16,400 |
$12,000 |
Zia |
Hunter |
Katie |
It's no longer a runaway, so let's do some math...
- Katie wins if she's the only one to get it correct AND the other two bet
against each other, but she's gotta play it all.
- Hunter wins if he bets $11,401 and Zia is wrong. That way, at least he covers
Katie's all-in bet.
- Zia wins if he bets $5001 and is right.
Final Jeopardy! category:
STATE CAPITALS
|
ONE OF THE 2 STATE CAPITALS WHOSE NAMES END IN THE GREEK WORD FOR "CITY" |
|
Correct response: what is Annapolis
or Indianapolis?
Katie's response: what is Anapolis? RIGHT. Wager: $2000. Total:
$14,000.
Hunter's response: what is Sacramento? WRONG. Wager: all-in. Total:
$0.
Zia's response: who is Annapolis, Maryland? RIGHT. Wager doesn't matter.
FINALIST:
Zia Choudhury.
First, a word for Katie. Way to not play a tournament game when you need
to play a tournament game. Nice to see you were totally non-committal
about making the final. As for Zia, well, he knew what he had to do and
he did it.
Final semi tomorrow.
