Finals: BU/SAU/Yale - Part 1
November
18

Last week, fifteen of the best and brightest of the hallowed halls and dorm rooms of academia descended upon the hallowed halls and studios of Sony Pictures to pitch intellectual combat, three at a time. Now the cream of the cram has risen to the top, as Boston University's Erin McLean, Southern Adventist's Hans von Walter, and Yale's Sam Spaulding try to make their tuition money tonight and Friday. At stake: the Jeopardy! Globe, $100,000, a spot in the quarter-million dollar Tournament of Champions... and the title of Jeopardy! College Champion.

Second place is guaranteed $50,000, while third will get $25,000 in a standard two-week event. All players are guaranteed a Nintendo Wii with THQ's "Jeopardy!" for participation. As always, any and all winning accrued depends on how far up the ladder a player goes.

And the doubleheader for all the cheddar starts... NOW!

Daily Double: $1000 It Happened in the Past. Back in the black, Erin's the only one with cash with $600. She bets the max of $1000 on this: on July 26, 1956 Egypt seized control of this geographic feature from its French & British owners. "What is the Suez Canal?" CORRECT for $1600!

At the end of Jeopardy!...

After quoting Steve Carell, we get these scores.

$8,400 -$1,200 $4,400
Erin Hans Sam

Double Jeopardy! categories:

WORDS

On category #6, each correct response will contain one vowel, but it may show up more than once.

Daily Double #1: $2000 Math Symbols. Erin has $15,200 to $11,200 for Sam. Erin bets $3200 on this from Sarah. "In math, an exclamation mark is called a factorial symbol. It means to do this with every positive integer of equal or lesser value--in this case, equal to 120."

5! = 120

"What is multiply it?" CORRECT for $18,400!

Second Daily Double goes unclaimed, and bad news for Hans...

$22,400 -$6,000 $14,400
Erin Hans Sam

Hans can only sit and watch Final Jeopardy!, but the good news: Jeopardy! will spot Hans the $6000, so he begins with zero tomorrow. He's still in it, but he's hanging by a thread.

Final Jeopardy! category: EUROPEAN COUNTRIES

GERMAN IT ITS OFFICIAL NATIONAL LANGUAGE; SLOVENE & HUNGARIAN ARE EACH OFFICIAL IN ONE OF ITS STATES

Correct response: what is Austria?

Sam's response: what is Slovakia? WRONG. Wager: $10,000. Total: $4400.
Erin's response: what is Switzerland? WRONG. Wager: $6401. Total: $15,999.

So at the half...

$15,999 $0 $4,400

Will Erin hold her lead to win the purse? Will Sam close the gap? And will Hans climb out of the hole to catch up? We're 24 hours away from a big money moment. Stay thirsty, my friends.
