Preliminaries: UVa/NWU/Yale
November

Fifteen undergrads. Fifteen schools. In the end, there can only be but one. On the line in this fortnight of intellectual fortitude, $100,000... bragging rights as the 2011 College Champion... and a place in the 2011 Tournament of Champions.

Second place is guaranteed $50,000, while third will get $25,000 in a standard two-week event. Semifinalists are guaranteed at least $10,000, while quarterfinalists are guaranteed a Nintendo Wii with THQ's "Jeopardy!" for participation. As always, any and all winning accrued depends on how far up the ladder a player goes.

Only nine of the fifteen that compete this week will be invited to return next week, however, the five winners this week and four wild card top-scorers.

So far, we have six. In 30 minutes, we'll have nine.

Jeopardy! round ...

COMIC BOOK

"P"RODUCE WORLD

AVATAR FRENCH
ANATOMY QUIZ

Daily Double: $800 "P"roduce. Amanda has $1400, $800 north of Sam, $600 south of Katie. She bets $800 to either take the lead or tie Sam. The clue: Augusta National Golf Club is on land once used to grow Belle & Thurber types of these. "What are peaches?" That would've been right, but pears knocks her down to $600.

At the end of the Jeopardy! round...

$1,600 $3,000 $7,000
Amanda Katie Sam

Double Jeopardy! categories:

WORDS

Daily Double #1: $1600 Music & Dance. Katie has this clue with $5400, but she's got a hill to climb against Sam's juiced $13,000. She bets $3000 on this: the lowest A on the piano has a frequency of 27.5 hertz; as it's one octave higher, the next A up has this frequency. "What is 35.5 hertz?" No, it was 55, leaving her with $2400.

Daily Double #2: $1600 Medieval Jobs. Sam has $15,000 and can put this game out of reach. He bets $1000 on this: bowyers made bows; these workers made the arrows. "What are fletchers?" Correct for $16,000!

End of the round scores tell the tale...

$7,200 $7,200 $18,000
Amanda Katie Sam

Sam's pretty much in. The ladies are pretty much out.

Final Jeopardy! category: DOCUMENTS

IT SAYS, "THE HISTORY OF THE PRESENT KING OF GREAT BRITAIN IS A HISTORY OF REPEATED INJURIES AND USURPATIONS"

Correct response: what is the US Declaration of Independence?

Amanda's response: what is the Declaration of Independence? CORRECT. Wager: $7199. Total: $14,399.
Katie's response: what is the Declaration of Independence? CORRECT. Wager: $5000. Total: $12,200.
Sam's response: what is the Declaration of Independence? CORRECT. Wager doesn't matter.

SEMI-FINALIST: Sam Spaulding

Sam had a very strong finish in the Double Jeopardy! round... and the fact that the ladies didn't show up until it was too late helped him out quite nicely. I doubt he'll come up against such mercy in the semis, though, but again, the point of this week is to make it to next week...

... and these nine DID.
