Preliminaries: Stanford/OH State/TX A&M
November
10
Fifteen undergrads. Fifteen schools. In
the end, there can only be but one. On the line in this fortnight of
intellectual fortitude, $100,000... bragging rights as the 2011 College
Champion... and a place in the 2011 Tournament of Champions.
Second place is guaranteed $50,000, while
third will get $25,000 in a standard two-week event. Semifinalists are
guaranteed at least $10,000, while quarterfinalists are guaranteed $5000
for participation. As always, any and all winning accrued depends on how
far up the ladder a player goes.
Only nine of the fifteen that compete this week will be invited to
return next week, however, the five winners this week and four wild card
top-scorers.
So far, Sid Chandrasekhar from Penn and Erin McLEan from Boston U are
guaranteed to be in next week's semis. Who'll join them?

Daily Double: $800 Kites. Kyle has
$2200, $200 more than Ellen and $1600 less than leader Folake. He only bets $600
on this: Samuel Cody crossed this waterway in 1903 in a dinghy pulled by kites,
reaching Britain after a 13-hour trip. "What is the English Channel?" Correct
for $2800!

Daily Double #1: $1600 World of War
Fact. Ellen was looking for it, but Kyle found it with $10,400 to her $7600.
After a line ruling, Folake has $6200. Kyle bets $3000 on this: 2 days before
this war was declared, the British said they'd repeal the laws that were the
chief reason for fighting us. "What is the American Revolution?" Not it. It was
the War of 1812. He's down to $7400.
Video Daily Double #2: $1200 Spacing Out. Ellen
finds it with $9600. She's going for the level on
this from Jimmy... "The speed needed for a rocket to
break free of Earth's gravity, 6.96 miles per
second, is called this, EV for short." "What is
external velocity?" Close, it's escape velocity,
dropping her to $8400.

Correct response: who is Jimmy
Carter?
Folake's response: who is Jimmy Carter? CORRECT. Wager:
$2500. Total: $8700.
Kyle's response: who was Carter? CORRECT. Wager: $6000. Total:
$15,800.
Ellen's response: who is Jimmy Carter? CORRECT. Wager: $9601. Total:
$19,601.
SEMI-FINALIST:
Ellen Eichner
By now, we know that Folake
and Monday's Olivia Colangelo are now mathematically eliminated from
further competition. Ellen may have the same problem that Erin had
yesterday with the late-round surge. That would call for the same
solution, that being keep the energy up.
Tomorrow, we'll have six of
your final nine. Stay
thirsty, my friends...
