Preliminaries: AZ State/UND/Nebraska

Fifteen undergrads. Fifteen schools. In the end, there can only be but one. On the line in this fortnight of intellectual fortitude, $100,000... bragging rights as the 2011 College Champion... and a place in the 2011 Tournament of Champions.

Second place is guaranteed $50,000, while third will get $25,000 in a standard two-week event. Semifinalists are guaranteed at least $10,000, while quarterfinalists are guaranteed a Nintendo Wii with THQ's "Jeopardy!" for participation. As always, any and all winning accrued depends on how far up the ladder a player goes.

Only nine of the fifteen that compete this week will be invited to return next week, however, the five winners this week and four wild card top-scorers.

So far, Sid Chandrasekhar from Penn, Erin McLean from Boston U, and Ellen Eichner from THE... Ohio State University are guaranteed to be in next week's semis. Who'll join them?

Marshall Flores

Steph Gagelin

Tim Relihan

In the interest of disclosure... Steph wants to be a clinical laboratory scientist.... MY chosen field. ... So there's that.

Daily Double: $800 Butterflies & Moths. Tim trails Steph by $1600, $4000 to her $5600. He bets $1800 on this: due to its golden shimmer, the pupa is also called this, from the Greek for "gold". "What is the aura?" No, it's the chrysalis, leaving him with $22000.

At the end of the Jeopardy! round...

Daily Double #1: $1600 Describing the Olympic Sport. $2400 is the lead enjoyed by Steph at the moment. She bets just $1000 on this: categories in this port include coxless pairs & single sculls. "What is rowing?" Correct for $8200.

Daily Double #2: $1600 Writers on the Move. Steph drops to $7000 to Marshall's $12,000. Tim has $9800. This clue belongs to... Marshall. $1000 is the wager on this: in the country, DH Lawrence started a novel called "Quetzalcoatl", later "The Plumed Serpent". "What is Mexico?" CORRECT for $13,000!

End of the round scores...

Final Jeopardy! category: THE 1930s

IN APRIL 1935 IN OKLAHOMA, WHEN BLOWING SOIL DARKENED THE SKY, A REPORTER COINED THIS TERM FOR THE REGION

Correct response: what is the Dust Bowl?

Steph's response: what is the Dust Bowl? CORRECT. Wager: $6999. Total: $13,999.
Tim's response: what is the Dust Bowl? CORRECT. Wager: $7000. Total: $14,800.
Marshall's response: what is the Dust Bowl? CORRECT. Wager: $2601. Total: $15,601.

SEMI-FINALIST: Marshall Flores

Proving that it's not how you start, but how you finish, as Marshall comes up strong and makes it a game before the other two drop out of it. Steph and Tim did all they could do, but without a strong showing - and with Steve Greene and Lea Tottle now assured of a spot in the semi - it is not enough.

Tomorrow, we'll have your final nine. Stay thirsty, my friends...
