Semifinals: Penn/FL St./Yale
November
17

Last week, fifteen of the best and brightest of the hallowed halls and dorm rooms of academia descended upon the hallowed halls and studios of Sony Pictures to pitch intellectual combat, three at a time. Now the cream of the cram has risen to the top, but there is still one more level to go. The winners of this game and the two to follow will reach that level and compete for $100,000, a spot in the quarter-million dollar Tournament of Champions... and the title of Jeopardy! College Champion.

Second place is guaranteed $50,000, while third will get $25,000 in a standard two-week event. Semifinalists are guaranteed at least $10,000, while all players are guaranteed a Nintendo Wii with THQ's "Jeopardy!" for participation. As always, any and all winning accrued depends on how far up the ladder a player goes.

The winner of this match gets Erin McLean and Hans von Walter. The two losers get $10,000.

MEET ME IN
THE "QUAD"

Daily Double: $800 The 15th Century. Sam was looking for it. He has $1600 to Sid's $2200. Lea is in the red. Sam makes it a true Daily Double on this: in 1421 the Ming dynasty moved its capital from Nanking to this city. "What is Beijing?" Correct for $3200.

After quoting Steve Carell, we get these scores.

$5,400 $6,000 $4,200
Sid Sam Lea

Double Jeopardy! categories:

HAIL TO
THE CHIEF
[adult swim] WORLD
RELIGION
PLANT
SCIENCE
TEXTBOOKS SAME VOWEL
WORDS

On category #6, each correct response will contain one vowel, but it may show up more than once.

Daily Double #1: $2000 Hail to the Chief. Sam finds it again and is still leading with $9600 to $5400 for Sid and $5000 for Lea. Sam bets $2000 on this: on July 2, 1921 he interrupted his golf game & formally ended hostilities with Germany by signing a treaty. "Who is... Harding?" CORRECT for $11,600!

Daily Double #2: $800 Textbooks. All three were looking for it, and while that was going on, Lea snuck to within $600 of the lead enjoyed by Sam. She risks $3000 on this: Dr. HV Carter illustrated this 1858 text, an instant success despite bad reviews in the British Medical Journal. "What is Gray's Anatomy?" Correct for $15,200!

End of the round scores...

$5,400 $17,200 $17,600
Sid Sam Lea

As if Lea were to say, "Check your pockets, boys, this game ain't over yet." Here's the breakdown from J-Archive.com on a 4/5 match:

- Sid wins if... Sam and Lea bet against each other and lose. That... isn't going to happen.
- Sam wins if... he bets between $800 (to cover Sid) and $6399 (to cover a safety bet by Lea) and is correct.
- Lea wins if... she bets $16,801 and is correct OR she wagers $6001 to cover Sam.

Final Jeopardy! category: PHRASES

IN ANCIENT ROME IT WAS A POST WHERE RACERS CHANGED DIRECTION; SINCE 1836 IT'S MEANT A MOMENT CHANGE OCCURS

Correct response: what is a turning point?

Sid's response: what is the end of the road? APT, BUT WRONG. Wager: $3600. Total: $1800.
Sam's response: what is fin de siecle? WRONG. Wager: $6399. Total: $10,801.
Lea's response: what is a pit stop? WRONG. Wager: $17,599. Total: $1

FINALIST: Sam Spaulding

Sam kept it close and kept plugging away at the clues, AND he did the math right. He probably had zero idea that Lea was going to go as hard as she did. Yes, he played it as smartly as he could and no one is going to fault him for that, but he didn't win so much as Lea lost. As a result, the Seminole is going home with 10,000 reasons why she should study up on proper Jeopardy! strategy.

And the stage is set for the final...
