Finals: Goucher/UNT/Vandy - Part 1
February 13

Last week, fifteen of the best and brightest of the hallowed halls and dorm rooms of academia descended upon the hallowed halls and studios of Sony Pictures to pitch intellectual combat, three at a time. Now the cream of the cram has risen to the top, as Goucher College's Sarah Bart, Vanderbilt's Zack Terrill, and North Texas's Monica Thieu try to make their tuition money tonight and Friday. At stake: the Jeopardy! Globe, $100,000, a spot in the quarter-million dollar Tournament of Champions... and the title of Jeopardy! College Champion.

Second place is guaranteed $50,000, while third will get $25,000 in a standard two-week event. Semifinalists are guaranteed at least $10,000. As always, any and all winning accrued depends on how far up the ladder a player goes.

Part 1 of the doubleheader for all the cheddar starts now...

Daily Double: $800 College Courses. Sarah is in second with $3600 to Monica's $4800. She makes it true for $7200 and the lead.... At Princeton, English 311, "the Medieval Period", is followed by English 312, the works of this poet. "Who is Chaucer?" FOR THE DOUBLER, $7200!

Daily Double #1: $2000 Vocabulary. Sarah's only $400 out of the lead enjoyed by Monica. She bets four times that on this: Carl Jung coined this word for a coincidence in time from the Greek for "with time". "I don't know." Synchronicity drops her to $9600.

Daily Double #2: $2000 History Is Strange. Sarah has $10,000 and will try again on this for $3000: our word for a capitve worker originated when medieval German eastern expansion captured many of these people. "Who are the Slavs?" Correct for $13,000!

At the end of Double Jeopardy!...

Final Jeopardy! category: ANNIVERSARIES

IN 2011 ELIZABETH II MARKED THE 400th ANNIVERSARY OF THIS, ASSEMBLED BY 47 TRANSLATORS IN OXFORD, LONDON & CAMBRIDGE

Correct response: what is the King James Bible?

Zack's response: what is the Oxford English Dictionary? WRONG. Wager: $4000. Total: $8000.
Monica's response: what is the King James Bible? CORRECT. Wager: $4000. Total: $18,000.
Sarah's response: what is the Oxford English Dictionary? WRONG. Wager: $7600. Total: $9800.

And it is anyone's game, though getting the Final correct gives Monica an edge.

$9,800 $18,000 $8,000

Tomorrow, one of these three gets to take a few months off from looking for a real job after graduation.
