Preliminaries:
IU/Duke/MIT
February 6
Fifteen undergrads. Fifteen schools. In
the end, there can only be but one. On the line in this fortnight of
intellectual fortitude, $100,000... bragging rights as the 2012 College
Champion... and a place in the 2012 Tournament of Champions.
Second place is guaranteed $50,000, while third will get $25,000 in a
standard two-week event. Semifinalists are guaranteed at least $10,000,
while quarterfinalists are guaranteed $5000 for participation. As
always, any and all winning accrued depends on how far up the ladder a
player goes.
Only nine of the fifteen that compete week one will be invited to return
in week two, however, the five winners this week and four wild card
top-scorers.
Today, we start building your final nine with three winners, two wild
cards, and at least one of these three...

Sarah has $3400 to Greer's $1800, but Marie is out in front with $6000. Sarah
goes for $2000 on this: the national day for this item is celebrated on June 6,
the birthday of Donald Duncan. "What is the yo-yo?" That's right, but Sarah has
a "string cheese" incident that costs her, dropping to $1400

Greer finds it with $9800 to $11,700 for Marie. He decides to go for it with
$3000 on this: title Trojan lovers in a Shakespeare play. "Who are Croilus &
Cressina?" CLOSE. It was "Troilus & Cressida", dropping the Dukie to $6800.

Sarah's response: who are Lewis & Clark? WRONG. Wager: $3600.
Total: $8800.
Marie's response: who were Lewis & Clark? WRONG. Wager: $2000. Total: $10,900.
Semifinalist:
Greer Mackebee
Let me preface this with the
disclaimer that, as a fan and alumnus of the University of North
Carolina, it's hard for me to remain partial about anything related to
that school in Durham. That said, and I'm being very impartial with
this, Greer is up against some formidable opponents, many of whom played
last week. He'll have to play as hard if not harder than them in order
to stand a chance at getting a final spot.
Elsewhere in the bracket,
congrats go to the Friday players, as all three will return to finish
the week off. Tomorrow, we have your final nine.
