Preliminaries: Cal Poly/Loyola Chicago/Harvard
February 1

Fifteen undergrads. Fifteen schools. In the end, there can only be but one. On the line in this fortnight of intellectual fortitude, $100,000... bragging rights as the 2012 College Champion... and a place in the 2012 Tournament of Champions.

Second place is guaranteed $50,000, while third will get $25,000 in a standard two-week event. Semifinalists are guaranteed at least $10,000, while quarterfinalists are guaranteed $5000 for participation. As always, any and all winning accrued depends on how far up the ladder a player goes.

Only nine of the fifteen that compete week one will be invited to return in week two, however, the five winners this week and four wild card top-scorers.

Grab your ballpoint pens and your comp books, because it's time to go to school.

Daily Double: $600 Children's Books. Carrie leads with $1000. The guys have $200 a piece. She makes it a true Daily Double on this: rejected by 26 publishers, this beloved classic by Madeleine L'Engle is celebrating its 50th anniversary in 2012. "What is 'A Wrinkle in Time'?" FOR THE DOUBLER, $2000!

Daily Double #1: $1200 Mythology. Weston adds to his lead with $13,000 to Charlie's $8000. He wagers $2000 on this: Hippocrene (horse spring) sprung up from where this creature's hoof struck Mount Helicon. "What is Pegasus?" Correct for $15,000!

Daily Double #2: $1600 Food Fight! Weston has a commanding lead, but how much of his $19,800 will he put in jeopardy? "Let's go $4800, Alex." Here's your Daily Double: a 1977 protocol added to these humane agreements prohibits combatants from attacking civilian food supplies. "What is the Geneva Convention?" Correct for $24,600!

Looks like Charlie and Carrie are playing for a wild card.

Final Jeopardy! category: WORD ORIGINS

FROM THE ARABIC FOR "STOREHOUSE", IN 1731 IT WAS FIRST USED TO REFER TO A MONTHLY STOREHOUSE OF INFORMATION

Correct response: what is a magazine?

Carrie's response: what is an almanac? WRONG. Wager: $4799. Total: $1.
Charlie's response: what is an almanac? WRONG. Wager: $10,799. Total: $1.
Weston's response: what is a library? WRONG. Wager doesn't matter.

Semifinalist: Weston Mangin

The two runners-up were doing the right thing, trying to get as much money as possible, but they could've - and should've - very well held back if they weren't sure of the category. Remember, the point of this week is to make it to next week. As for Weston, he started slow, but finished strong to occupy the first of the nine slots in the semifinal round.

Who'll join him? Stay tuned.
