Preliminaries: GWU/EIU/UMich
February 2

Fifteen undergrads. Fifteen schools. In the end, there can only be but one. On the line in this fortnight of intellectual fortitude, $100,000... bragging rights as the 2012 College Champion... and a place in the 2012 Tournament of Champions.

Second place is guaranteed $50,000, while third will get $25,000 in a standard two-week event. Semifinalists are guaranteed at least $10,000, while quarterfinalists are guaranteed $5000 for participation. As always, any and all winning accrued depends on how far up the ladder a player goes.

Only nine of the fifteen that compete week one will be invited to return in week two, however, the five winners this week and four wild card top-scorers.

Weston Mangin has a ticket to next week. Who'll join him in this match?

And then Vanna White does some planking.

She fronts $1600 on this: William Barry in 1829 was the first & Winton Blount in 1969 the last to be this as a cabinet member. "What is postmaster general?" Correct for $10,000!

Daily Double #2: $800 Entrance Exam. Anne has come back to $10,400, more than enough to overtake Jaime's $18,400. Connie has $8000. She just bets $2000 on this: the Anne Boleyn Gatehouse at Hampton Court is in this historic architectural style. "What is gothic?" No, it was Tudor, leaving her with $8400.

This match goes to show you what happens when you keep playing a solid game, even in the face of a daunting opponent. Connie will be back with her solid game against the semifinals. And don't be surprised if you see Jaime - who was pouring pressure all day - and Anne - who played Final perfectly - there as well.

Two down, three to go.
