Semifinals:
Beachum/Shah/Swain
May 14
While college seniors all
across the country are graduating, nine of last week's players are
graduating to the next level, the semi-finals. For three of them, the
road to $100,000 and a slot in the next Tournament of Champions
continues. For the other six, the dream ends here at the Kohl Center in
Madison.
This Spring Classic is
another standard two-week affair, advancing the winners of last week's
games as well as four wild-cards, high scorers among non-winners. All of
this week's players will be
guaranteed $10,000 for their participation. And in the end, only the
winner will advance, hence the phrase, "Win or go home."
The first runner-up receives
$50,000 at least, while the second runner-up wins at least $25,000. As
always, any and all winnings accrued depends on how far up the ladder a
player goes.
Who'll join Danielle and
Andrew in the
finals? Time to find out. Semi #3...

Daily Double: $600 The
Russians Are Coming. Joey just got back into the
black against Suchita's $4800 and Vera's $3800. He
bets the max of $1000 on this: the only son of
Nicholas II, Alexis was the last male heir born to
this royal family while it ruled Russia. "Who are
the Romanovs?" Correct for $1000.

Daily Double #1: $1600 Famous
College Dropouts. Joey is in second with $5400 against Suchita's $11,200 and
Vera's $2800. He can come mighty close with an all-in wager. Instead, he bets
$2500 on this: after dropping out of the University of Maryland, he exposed the
Watergate scandal with Bob Woodward. "Who is Carl Bernstein?" Correct for $7900.
Daily Double #2: $1200 New York
Times Tech Biz. Joey finds it again, and this time, he CAN pass Suchita's
$12,000. He bets $3300 to tie. The clue: the Times cites an estimate that in
2007, its 3rd year, this site used as much bandwidth as the entire Internet in
2000. "What is YouTube?" Correct for the tie and $12,000!

Joey |
Suchita |
Vera |
Now here's what we have to
do, courtesy J-archive.com:
- Vera can't win unless Joey
and Suchita bet against each other and both are wrong. She'd be wise to
err on the side of caution and just bet $400.
- Joey wins if he bets $13,601 against Suchita and is right (or $4801 as
a CYA maneuver a la Bob Shore).
- Suchita wins if she bets between $4001 and $6799 and is correct while
Joey bets safely and is wrong.

Correct response: what is Texas?
Vera's response: what is Mexico? WRONG. Wager: $4400. Total: $0.
Joey's response: what is Texas? RIGHT. Wager: $15,600. Total:
$31,200.
Suchita's response: what is California? WRONG. Wager doesn't matter.
FINALIST:
Joey Beachum
Well, starting as slow as
Joey did, there was no other strategy than to pour on the heat by
playing the rest of the game solidly. He did, managing to get into
Suchita's head and leaving her to trip on her own petard as it were.
Now he's among the three
playing for $100,000...
