College. The best time of your life.

College Jeopardy! The best two weeks of your life.

Fifteen of the nation's best and brightest have descended upon the campus of the University of Wisconsin at Madison to prove who's the best of the best. At stake, $100,000, the title of 2008 College Champion, bragging rights, and the right to compete amongst the best of the best in the next Tournament of Champions. Rivalries will be hard fought, upsets are certain, and any one move can spell either certain glory or certain failure.

This Spring Classic is another standard two-week affair, advancing the winners of this week's games as well as four wild-cards, high scorers among non-winners. All of this week's players will receive $5000, while the semifinalists will be guaranteed $10,000 for their participation.

The first runner-up receives $50,000 at least, while the second runner-up wins at least $25,000. As always, any and all winnings accrued depends on how far up the ladder a player goes.

We have six players... In 30 minutes, we're going to be down to your final nine.

Tara Franey
Michigan State
senior
Jonathan Hawley
Harvard
sophomore
Than Hedman
Colorado-Boulder
freshman

Jeopardy! categories:

AMERICAN IDOL COLLEGE-PODGE GET A JOB! MOTHER'S DAY GOVERNMENT LET'S SPEAK FRENCH

Daily Double: $600 Get a Job!. Than leads with $5200 against Jonatha's $1200 and Tara's $1600, but Tara deals with this one by herself, betting $1000 on this: Lord, it's the occupation mentioned in the first line of the 23rd Psalm. "What is farming?" Close, it's "shepher", leaving her with $600.

At the end of the Jeopardy! round...

$3,800 $3,200 $7,400
Tara Jonathan Than

Double Jeopardy! categories:

AMERICAN ISLE SCIENCE COLLEGE STADIUMS & ARENAS POETS & POETRY McLOVIN' WORDS IN UNIVERSITY

Daily Double #1: $1600 McLovin'. Than still enjoys a comfortable lead with $8600 to Jonathan's $4400 and Tara's $3800. Than bets $1600 on this: after she died in 2003, Joan Kroc left $60 million to this charitable "House". "What is Ronald McDonald House?" Correct for $10,200.

Daily Double #2: $1600 Poets & Poetry. Tara goes three in a row for $8200 to Than's $10,200. Jonathan has $2400. Tara bets $3000 for the lead on this one: "The Holy Grail" & "Guinevere" are among the poems contained in this Tennyson work. "What are 'The Idols of the King'?" Correct for $11,200 and the lead!

At the end of the Double Jeopardy! Round...

$15,600 $6,000 $18,200
Tara Jonathan Than

Final Jeopardy! category: ANCIENT TIMES

PLUTARCH'S CHAPTER ON ROMULUS QUOTES THIS MUCH LATER MAN AS SAYING, "I LOVE TREASON, BUT HATE A TRAITOR"

Correct response: who is Julius Caesar?

Jonathan's response: who is Cicero? WRONG. Wager: $5998. Total: $2.
Tara's response: who is Julius Caesar? RIGHT. Wager: $10,000. Total: $25,600.
Than's response: who is Cicero? WRONG. Wager: $13,001. Total: $5199.

SEMI-FINALIST: Tara Franey

Let this be a lesson to any future Jeopardy! players: if you're chosen for a tournament, be prepared to play all 30 minutes of each of your games. Tara and Than kept things close, but Than's wager in the final round cost him. Theoretically, he could've afforded to wager nothing and still have a great chance at making Wild Card. As it is, though, Tara joins this field of nine, where we half-expect her to keep things interesting.

Your heretofore alluded final nine...
