Semifinals:
DeVries/Chung/Grant
May 13
While college seniors all
across the country are graduating, nine of last week's players are
graduating to the next level, the semi-finals. For three of them, the
road to $100,000 and a slot in the next Tournament of Champions
continues. For the other six, the dream ends here at the Kohl Center in
Madison.
This Spring Classic is
another standard two-week affair, advancing the winners of last week's
games as well as four wild-cards, high scorers among non-winners. All of
this week's players will be
guaranteed $10,000 for their participation. And in the end, only the
winner will advance, hence the phrase, "Win or go home."
The first runner-up receives
$50,000 at least, while the second runner-up wins at least $25,000. As
always, any and all winnings accrued depends on how far up the ladder a
player goes.
Who'll join Danielle in the
finals? Time to find out. Semi #2...

YOU'RE SUCH AN IDIOM! |
Daily Double: $1000
You're Such an Idiom!. Danny leads it with $4800
against Andrew's $600 and James' $2800. "Alex, I've
always wanted to do this. Let's make it a true Daily
Double." The clue: it describes a small, dingy,
out-of-the-way place, or an aperture in Hadrian's
famous structure. "What is a hole in the wall?" That
will get him the money. Instead, Danny runs out of
time... and money.

Daily Double #1: $1200 Who's Your
Mommy? Danny's behind with $1200 to Andrew's $5000 and James' $3000. He bets all
of his stash on this: invention (proverbially). "What is necessity?" Correct for
$2400.
Daily Double #2: $1200 Music Class.
Andrew finds it as he leads with $10,200 against James' $4600 and Danny's $2800.
Andrew can make this incredibly difficult for his two opponents. He bets $2000
on this: this large woodwind can play very low notes, & its name comes from the
Italian for "very low". "What is a bassoon?" Correct for $12,200.

James' response: what is Go G-Town Rugby! WRONG. Wager: $2596. Total: $4.
Danny's response: what is congrats! Go Blue! WRONG. Wager: $0. Total:
$6000.
Andrew's response: what is ... I don't know. WRONG. Wager: $0. Total: $12,200.
FINALIST:
Andrew Chung
Andrew played very well in
the Double Jeopardy! round, but this wasn't a case of Andrew beating
everyone, so much as it was a case of Danny beating himself. Had he
gotten the Daily Double correct, he would've stood a very real chance of
playing for $100K. Instead, it's Andrew's time to shine.
Final semi tomorrow.
