Semifinals: Zsenak/Franey/McMahan
May 12

While college seniors all across the country are graduating, nine of last week's players are graduating to the next level, the semi-finals. For three of them, the road to $100,000 and a slot in the next Tournament of Champions continues. For the other six, the dream ends here at the Kohl Center in Madison.

This Spring Classic is another standard two-week affair, advancing the winners of last week's games as well as four wild-cards, high scorers among non-winners. All of this week's players will be guaranteed $10,000 for their participation. And in the end, only the winner will advance, hence the phrase, "Win or go home."

The first runner-up receives $50,000 at least, while the second runner-up wins at least $25,000. As always, any and all winnings accrued depends on how far up the ladder a player goes.

The first semi is as follows...

Danielle Zsenak
Marquette
senior
Tara Franey
Michigan State
senior
Gabrielle McMahan
Florida A&M
junior

COLLEGE COURSES OPRAH'S BOOK CLUB WEIGHTS & MEASURES "NEW" MEDIA

Daily Double: $600 Weights & Measures. Tara leads with $4800 to Gabrielle's $2600 and Danielle's $3400. Tara bets $1400 on this: to correct medieval abuses in trade, this 1215 document standardized measurements for wine & grain. "What is the Doomsday Book?" Nope, it was the Magna Carta, to tie her with Danielle's $3400.

At the end of the Jeopardy! round...

$4,400 $5,000 $4,000
Danielle Tara Gabrielle

Double Jeopardy! categories:

HISTORICAL DIARIES? MYTHOLOGICAL WORDS & PHRASES CHEMISTRY FOREIGN COLLEGE TOWNS MAKE SOME NOISE! NEW MEDIA

Daily Double #1: $2000 Mythological Words & Phrases. Danielle takes the lead with $8400 to Gabrielle's $8000 and Tara's $7000. She bets $2000 on this: the counselor of Odysseus's son Telemachus, his name is now used to mean an older adviser. "Who is Mentor?" Correct for $10,400.

Daily Double #2: $800 Foreign College Towns. Danielle's back in the lead after the previous clue with $14,000 against Tara's $12,200. Gabrielle has $10,800. Danielle fronts $1000 on this: Varanassi, home to Banaras Hindu University, is on the left bank of this river. "What is the Ganges?" Correct for $15,000.

At the end of the Double Jeopardy! Round...

$15,800 $12,200 $10,800
Danielle Tara Gabrielle

Now let's do the math with help from our friends at J-Archive.com:

Gabrielle wins if she bets between $1401 and $3600, and we end up with at worst a triple stumper or at best a singleton win.

Tara wins if she bets either less than $5000 on a triple stumper or more than $9400, forcing Danielle to get it right. She's in "Stratton's Dilemma".

Danielle wins if she bets $8601 and is correct.

Final Jeopardy! category: INVENTORS

IN 1894, IN HIS WEST ORANGE LAB, THOMAS EDISON SHOT THIS SPORT, THE FIRST SPORTING EVENT EVER FILMED

Correct response: what is boxing?

Gabrielle's response: what is cricket? WRONG. Wager: $10,800. Total: $0.
Tara's response: what is baseball? WRONG. Wager: $9401. Total: $2799.
Danielle's response: what is table tennis? WRONG. Wager: $12,201. Total: $3599.

FINALIST: Danielle Zsenak

Rather unorthodox play in the Final by Danielle. If she's to win on Friday, she needs to watch it with that. As we've seen time and time again, this is a game of inches. Every point counts, and she would've had a lot more of those points today to send a message out there that she knows her stuff if she did the math correctly.

Second semi tomorrow.
