Preliminaries: Hensley/Johnson/McMahan
May 5
College. The best time of
your life.
College Jeopardy! The best
two weeks of your life.
Fifteen of the nation's best
and brightest have descended upon the campus of the University of
Wisconsin at Madison to prove who's the best of the best. At stake,
$100,000, the title of 2008 College Champion, bragging rights, and the
right to compete amongst the best of the best in the next Tournament of
Champions. Rivalries will be hard fought, upsets are certain, and any
one move can spell either certain glory or certain failure.
This Spring Classic is
another standard two-week affair, advancing the winners of this week's
games as well as four wild-cards, high scorers among non-winners. All of
this week's players will receive $5000, while the semifinalists will be
guaranteed $10,000 for their participation.
The first runner-up receives
$50,000 at least, while the second runner-up wins at least $25,000. As
always, any and all winnings accrued depends on how far up the ladder a
player goes.
And it all starts... RIGHT

Around the World. Gabrielle is tied for second with Brandon, $800 against
Meredith's $1800. She risks $1000 to tie Meredith. The clue, given by Jimmy: the
waterway that separates South America from Antarctica is known as this passage,
for an explorer who may have navigated it in 1578. "What is the Strait of
Magellan?" Close, but it was the Drake Passage, leaving her $200 down.

Daily Double #1: $2000 Countries in
Other Words. Gabrielle leads it with $9800 to Brandon's $6600 and Meredith's
$6000.
She bets the level on this: pachyderm dentin seaside land? "What is ... Camel?"
Pachyderm dentin is ivory. Seaside land is coast. Put it together... Ivory
Coast, though it's officially known as Cote d'Ivoire now. She drops to $7800,
still leading.
Daily Double #2: $2000 Annual
Events. Brandon's $400 behind the leader, Gabrielle ($9000). Meredith,
meanwhile, has $7200. He goes $2400 on this: this corporation is the engine
behind the first National Train Day, May 10, 2008, remembering the Golden Spike
of May 10, 1869. "What is ... Pacific Union?" It was Amtrak, leaving him with
$6200.

Meredith's response: who is Thoreau? RIGHT. Wager: $2001. Total:
$9201.
Gabrielle's response: who is Thoreau? RIGHT. Wager: $1000. Total:
$10,000.
SEMI-FINALIST:
Gabrielle McMahan
Usually the first game sets
the tone for the rest of the series. This one put out the message that
it's not going to be about how much money you have, but what you do with
what you have. Brandon did the only thing he could have, and Meredith
held back. Time will tell whether or not they will join Gabrielle next
week.
Second quarterfinal tomorrow.
