Today is

Through the Flop and Around the Turn - April 9

What an up & down week for Shandi.

Downs: Getting kicked out with Brian in week 3

Ups: Celebrating her 2 shows (Playmania turning 1, and Lingo on season 6)

But that's another story. It's another week as the 9 couples will try the paso doble or the waltz. And it's on like Donkey Kong.

Before we begin, Len reminded us that the couples will dance on an average of 13 hours per week, compared to last week's 19. That should be an infraction, but let's cut to the chase and get on with it. Laila & max will go first. As they paso doble, she was distracted, yet the routine had no passion. Now we get our first glance at the judges. Carrie Ann said she's gotta work on your flexibility and opening up a little more, Len knew there wasn't enough content in Laila's flamenco arms and Bruno said the performance was like watching a rerun. But here's the scoreboard for you:

CARRIE ANN: 7
LEN: 7
BRUNO: 7
Total Score: 21

That'll give them a good start.

Second, Apolo & Julianne doing a waltz to "If You Don't Know Me by Know" by Simply Red. It turned on the ballroom with poise and passion. Now the judges get their say. Carrie Ann said it was so romantic, Len said it was riddled with footwork, and Bruno said they are the crown jewels of the competition. Let's reward them with good numbers, shall we?

CARRIE ANN: 9
LEN: 8
BRUNO: 9
Total Score: 26

Now that's a good lead.

Up next, Leeza & Tony. They escaped elimination last week, proving once again for Leeza that 50 is the new 30. She trained with UFC fighter Randy Couture, but now she will be the ultimate come finals time as they paso doble to "You Give Love A Bad Name" by Bon Jovi. Leeza looked good in a biker outfit, but took a few wrong turns and a few dead ends. Now let's turn it over to the judges. Carrie Ann said it looked awkward on her heels, Len said dull 3 times and Bruno said it was the diet version of a juicy steak. Nutrisystem, anyone? Now, the numbers:

CARRIE ANN: 6
LEN: 5
BRUNO: 5
Total Score: 16

Just way in last place.

Ian & Cheryl will be up doing a waltz to "He was Beautiful" by Shirley Bassey. It was a solid performance, but didn't have the romance to have it. Did the judges have it? Carrie Ann said it lost the balance and the footing so often, Len said it was a really, really good waltz and Bruno said "You started like Mr. McDreamy, but sometime you went to Mr. McStiffy." Mr. Numbers, if you would please....

CARRIE ANN: 7
LEN: 9
BRUNO: 8
Total Score: 24

It's now 2nd place for them.

John & Edyta will be up doing a paso doble to "A Kind of Magic" by Queen. John's dancing felt sloppy to bad choreography, but did the judges feel something sloppy? Carrie Ann was confused, Len liked the humor, and Bruno said it lost the magic and turned into a curse. What's he thinking? The Chicago Cubs? Anyway, here's the numbers:

CARRIE ANN: 6
LEN: 5
BRUNO: 5
Total Score: 16

It's a tie for very-dead last.

Clyde & Elena will be up doing "Foolish" by Johnny Cash. Nothing romantic and it was the sloppiness that had to happen. Let's see if the judges were right. Carrie Ann knew the different styles weren't showing up, Len said he's not even giving it a shot, and Bruno complained it was like a Rosie & Donald romance. If they only knew. Now the numbers.

CARRIE ANN: 6
LEN: 4
BRUNO: 5
Total Score: 15

Now they get last place.

Billy Ray & Karina will be up to do "Black Betty" by Ram Jam. He felt clumsy, but Billy ray is alright with me. Were the judges alright? Carrie Ann said it was oddly awkward, and sexy, and hot, and strange all at once, but I loved it. Sweet. Len said it's seeing him improve, and Bruno said it went for it like a bull in Pamplona. But can the numbers shoot like a Chicago Bulls 90's player? Let's see.

CARRIE ANN: 7
LEN: 7
BRUNO: 7
Total Score: 21

It's now a tie for 3rd place.

Heather & Jonathan will be up doing "Sandy's Song" by Dolly Parton as a waltz. Heather wasn't steady, but she did ok with a few spins to it. Now we go to the judges. Carrie Ann said this week wasn't good, Len said she did a great job overall and Bruno said give Jonathan credit for crafting those dances. Can the numbers give them extra credit?

CARRIE ANN: 7
LEN: 8
BRUNO: 8
Total Score: 23

And that breaks the tie for 2nd place.

Last up, Joey & Kym doing a paso doble. Man, it captured everything, with arm action, a floor slide and a whole lot more. Now the judges. Carrie Ann said he is on fire, Len said it captured the dance and Bruno said it was right on it. Let's get right to the numbers one last time.

CARRIE ANN: 10
LEN: 9
BRUNO: 9
Total Score: 29

And they now have the lead.

It's been a great night. Let's have the scorecard:

28 -- Joey & Kym
26 -- Apolo & Julianne
24 -- Ian & Cheryl
23 -- Heather & Jonathan
21 -- Laila & Maks, Billy Ray & Karina
16 -- Leeza & Tony, John & Edyta
15 -- Clyde & Elena

It's a no-brainer to see who's going home tonight. Maybe the votes will save them. Maybe we'll see on the results show in 22 1/2 hours. good night.
