Semifinals: Stanley/Whitten/Quinn
February 24

Fifteen teachers have competed at Sony for the title of 2012 Teacher's Champion and a guaranteed shot at a quarter-million in the next Tournament of Champions. Of them, nine semifinalists - five automatic qualifiers and four wild cards - have emerged. Now the race begins to the finals, and with a chance $100,000 on the line for three of the nation's finest educators, there's only one rule in this semifinal classroom... WIN... OR GO HOME.

This is week 2 of a standard Jeopardy! tournament format. Second place is guaranteed $50,000, while third will get $25,000. The players who got this far will receive at least $10,000 and a copy of Classroom Jeopardy! for participation. As always, any and all winning accrued depends on how far up the ladder a player goes.

Winner of this match gets Brooks Humphreys and Justin Hofstetter.

Daily Double: $600 Historic Letters. Patrick has $600 and is the only one in money at the moment. He bets the max of $1000 on this: among those he accused in an 1898 letter were Colonel du Paty, General Mercier & General Billot. "Who is Dreyfus?" Close, it was Emile Zola, dropping him to -$400.

At the end of Jeopardy!...

Daily Double #1: $1600 Hospital Departments. Patrick's been on a tear with $8600, but this clue belongs to Mary Ann with $6400. She fronts $3000 on this: at the other end of life from the NICU is the GICU, short for this. "What is the geriatric intensive care unit?" Correct for $9400!

Daily Double #2: $2000 Broadway. Mary Ann leads with $10,200. She bets $2000 on this, putting her lead at risk: 1927's "The Royal Family" was a comic portrayal of this American theatrical family of the day. "Who are the Barrymores?" Correct for $12,200!

At the end of Double Jeopardy!...

Mary Ann Catherine Patrick

Going to J-Archive.com...

- Catherine wins if... she bets $2200 or less on a triple stumper.
- Patrick wins if... he bets at least $601 but no more than $5599 and forces Catherine to play.
- Mary Ann wins if... she bets $9801 and is correct.

Final Jeopardy! category: LITERARY BIOGRAPHIES

QUOTING A FAMOUS LINE OF HIS, A 2011 BIOGRAPHY OF THIS MAN WAS TITLED "AND SO IT GOES"

Correct response: who is Kurt Vonnegut, Jr.?

Catherine's response: who is Mark Twain? WRONG. Wager: $6200. Total: $0.
Patrick's response: who is Dickens? WRONG. Wager: $6011. Total: $5789.
Mary Ann's response: who is Walter Cronkite? WRONG. Wager: $13,750. Total: $50.

Finalist: Patrick Quinn

Usually, in this space, I'd chronicle what the winner did to win and what the winner would need to do to win the whole thing, but this game is more or less a post-mortem for a collection of players betting badly. Had everyone followed proper betting strategy, Catherine would've had $4000, Patrick would've had $6201, and Mary Ann would've had $3999... So Patrick would've won anyway. But still, everyone made a severe blunder in wagering... and everyone knew it. In 27 seasons of Jeopardy!, no one has done such in the finals games and has won. A lesson to be learned... and so it goes.

Meanwhile, Patrick has THIS to look forward to next time we meet...

JUSTIN HOFSTETTER - FINALIST

BROOKS HUMPHREYS - FINALIST

PATRICK QUINN - FINALIST
