Preliminaries: Johnston/Rice/Whitten
February 17
Last year, Jeopardy! began an interesting
experiment. The show sees a lot of teachers as contestants, so what
would happen if we took 15 of them and let them look in a tournament
setting? The end result was an astounding success, so for the second
year in a row, J! is saluting the educators and molders of young minds
by inviting another fifteen to compete for $100,000 and a guaranteed
slot in the next Tournament of Champions.
Second place is guaranteed $50,000, while third will get $25,000 in a
standard two-week event. Semifinalists are guaranteed at least $10,000,
while quarterfinalists are guaranteed $5000 for participation. As
always, any and all winning accrued depends on how far up the ladder a
player goes.
Only nine of the fifteen that compete week one will be invited to return
in week two, however, the five winners this week and four wild card
top-scorers.
Patrick Quinn and Brooks Humphreys brought their A-game, but now we move
to third period...

Double #1: $1600 Pirates. It's a close game with Lisa at $10,400 to Catherine's
$10,800 and $12,700 for Nate. She fronts $3000 on this: the first Barbary Coast
Wars fought on the "shores of Tripoli" against pirates occurred under this
president. "Who is Monroe?" No, it was Thomas Jefferson, leaving her with $7400.
Video Daily Double #2: $1600 That's
Not Gneiss. Lisa has $8600, trying again for $3000 on this: this porous volcanic
rock floats. After the eruption of Krakatoa, banks of it covered the ocean for
miles. "What is pumice?" That... would've been right, but tufa drops her further
to $5600.

Semifinalist:
Catherine Whitten
A Double Jeopardy! rally set
the stage for Catherine to play catchup, and a wrong response on the
part of Nate gives her the W. Now if she can play like that ALL the
time, she could easily be a threat. She's already taken down two people
- the losers of yesterday's match.
Next week, we start building
your final nine...
