Preliminaries: Brown/Stanley/Wendling
February 20
Last year, Jeopardy! began an interesting
experiment. The show sees a lot of teachers as contestants, so what
would happen if we took 15 of them and let them look in a tournament
setting? The end result was an astounding success, so for the second
year in a row, J! is saluting the educators and molders of young minds
by inviting another fifteen to compete for $100,000 and a guaranteed
slot in the next Tournament of Champions.
Second place is guaranteed $50,000, while third will get $25,000 in a
standard two-week event. Semifinalists are guaranteed at least $10,000,
while quarterfinalists are guaranteed $5000 for participation. As
always, any and all winning accrued depends on how far up the ladder a
player goes.
Only nine of the fifteen that compete week one will be invited to return
in week two, however, the five winners this week and four wild card
top-scorers.
Three semifinalists are in the books. In 30 minutes, we'll have six.

Daily Double: $800 Theme. Mary Ann
has $4800 and the lead by $1800. She bets that much on this: the theme for this
Tom Hanks movie is sometimes referred to as "The Feather Theme". "What is
Forrest Gump?" That was right... but Mary Ann gave us "Cast Away" to drop into a
tie for first with $3000.

Daily Double #1: $1600 Bible Guys.
Mary Ann has the lead again with $15,800. She bets $3000 on this: "And it came
to pass at the end of forty days, that" he "opened the window... which he had
made". "Who is Noah?" CORRECT for $18,800!
Daily Double #2: $2000 Independence
Days. Because this is the last clue in the round, Brad knows exactly what to do
with his $9200 against Mary Ann's $22,400 and Kathryn's $9600. He has to bet at
least the level to achieve a tie and stay in the game.... and he only bets half
that. So we know that Mary Ann will win the game provided she doesn't do
anything outrageous. The clue for Brad... Belgium, October 4, 1830, from this
country. "What is ... France?" ... No, it was the Netherlands, dropping him to
$8200, and he and Kathryn are competing for Wild Card.

THIS FRENCH
PAINTER WROTE, "I AM GOOD FOR NOTHING EXCEPT PAINTING AND GARDENING" |

Correct response: who was Claude
Monet?
Brad's response: who is Cezanne? WRONG. Wager: $8200. Total: $0.
Kathryn's response: who is Monet? CORRECT. Wager: $9600.
Total: $19,200.
Mary Ann's response: who is Gaugain (sp)? WRONG. Wager: $100. Total:
$22,300
Semifinalist:
Mary Ann Stanley
Well, it's one of those
things that's just water under the bridge. Had Brad bet the proper wager
and gotten the Daily Double correct, he STILL would've missed Final. So
the last move he made... inconsequential. Meanwhile, Kathryn DOES close
out and she will return because of it. Joining her: Nate Rice from the
Friday show. Mary Ann, though, needs to have THIS front game performance
AND close out if she wants to have a spot in the final.
Tomorrow, we reveal your
final nine.
