Preliminaries: Dell'Era/Evenhouse/Humphreys
February 16
Last year, Jeopardy! began an interesting
experiment. The show sees a lot of teachers as contestants, so what
would happen if we took 15 of them and let them look in a tournament
setting? The end result was an astounding success, so for the second
year in a row, J! is saluting the educators and molders of young minds
by inviting another fifteen to compete for $100,000 and a guaranteed
slot in the next Tournament of Champions.
Second place is guaranteed $50,000, while third will get $25,000 in a
standard two-week event. Semifinalists are guaranteed at least $10,000,
while quarterfinalists are guaranteed $5000 for participation. As
always, any and all winning accrued depends on how far up the ladder a
player goes.
Only nine of the fifteen that compete week one will be invited to return
in week two, however, the five winners this week and four wild card
top-scorers.
Patrick Quinn is the only one on the honor roll so far, but he's about
to get some company.

Daily Double #1: $1600 Lakes. Brooks
has made an astonishing leap to lead with $10,200 to Steven's $9200, but this
clue belongs to the man in the middle. He fronts $1500 on this: international

"What is Lake Tanganyika?" No, it was Lake Victoria, dropping him to $7700.
Daily Double #2: $1200 '50s Fiction.
Jessica also on the comeback trail with $10,800 to Brooks' $12,200. She wagers
$2000 on this: his 1950 novel "Across the River and Into the Trees" reflected a
growing bitterness toward life. "Who is Jean Paul Sartre?" No, it was Ernest
Hemingway, dropping her to $8800.

Semifinalist:
Brooks Humphreys
Brooks has a strong front
game, a very broad base of knowledge. That comes from teaching at a
Catholic high school. Kind of a shocker that he didn't even get the
Final, but at least he bet right. We'll see if he can keep the momentum
going in the days to come. Go ahead, pump your fist. You've earned it.
Meanwhile, we look forward
to Friday's matchup.
