Preliminaries: Decker/Hofstetter/Wong
February 21

Last year, Jeopardy! began an interesting experiment. The show sees a lot of teachers as contestants, so what would happen if we took 15 of them and let them look in a tournament setting? The end result was an astounding success, so for the second year in a row, J! is saluting the educators and molders of young minds by inviting another fifteen to compete for $100,000 and a guaranteed slot in the next Tournament of Champions.

Second place is guaranteed $50,000, while third will get $25,000 in a standard two-week event. Semifinalists are guaranteed at least $10,000, while quarterfinalists are guaranteed $5000 and a copy of Classroom Jeopardy! for participation. As always, any and all winning accrued depends on how far up the ladder a player goes.

Only nine of the fifteen that compete week one will be invited to return in week two, however, the five winners this week and four wild card top-scorers.

Give us 30 minutes, and we'll give you the semifinalists...

Daily Double: $1000 Acts of Congress. Justin has $3000 and the lead. "I've wanted to say this for 21 years; let's make it a True Daily Double, please." You got it. For $6000 or nothing... Britain couldn't afford to pay cash for war materials much longer, so FDR proposed this alliterative act in December 1940. "What is the 'I Just Lost $3000' Act?" Sorry, dude, it was the Lend Lease Act.

At the end of Jeopardy!...

Daily Double #1: $800 War, Who Ya Got? With a $7400 lead, Justin bets just $4000 on this: Punic Wars: Rome vs... "Who is Carthage?" Correct for $16,400!

Daily Double #2: $800 A Hell of a Quote. With an even bigger $12,200 lead, Justin bets just $6000 on this: "All Hell broke loose" comes from his 17th Century epic poem. "What is 'Paradise Lost'?" Correct for $23,600.

At the end of the Double Jeopardy! round... Leslie and Pian are competing for Wild Card.

As a reminder, the two bubble scores are $13,600 and $11,700.

Final Jeopardy! category: ASIAN BORDERS

IN 1893 THE BRITISH ESTABLISHED THE DURAND LINE, NOW THE BOUNDARY, MUCH IN THE NEWS SINCE 2001, BETWEEN THESE 2 COUNTRIES

Correct response: what are Pakistan & Afghanistan?

Leslie's response: what are Pakistan & Afghanistan? CORRECT. Wager: $6399. Total: $12,799.
Pian's response: what is (illegible)? WRONG. Wager: $10,112. Total: $16,88.
Justin's response: what are India & Pakistan? WRONG. Wager: $1711. Total: $26,689

Semifinalist: Justin Hofstetter

Permit me to make the obvious pun... but NO ONE HASSLES THE HOF. No one could, really, as Justin exploded during Double Jeopardy! and puts 21 years of watching and waiting to good use.

Now we'll see if he can do the same against these eight. It's your final nine, locked, loaded, and ready.

LESLIE DECKER - Wild Card

JUSTIN HOFSTETTER - Game 5 Winner

BROOKS HUMPHREYS - Game 2 Winner

LISA JOHNSTON - Wild Card

PATRICK QUINN - Game 1 Winner

NATE RICE - Wild Card

MARY ANN STANLEY - Game 4 Winner

KATHRYN WENDLING - Wild Card

CATHERINE WHITTEN - Game 3 Winner

Tomorrow, nine becomes seven... which become five... which become three. It's win-or-go-home time, and only one can be the valedictorian of THIS class!
