Fifteen of the best college students to
play the game this year met on a common battlefield. Only nine survive
to compete this week for one of three spots in the two-part final. Up
for grabs: $100,000, the 2009 Jeopardy! College Championship, and
perhaps a berth in the next Tournament of Champions.
This is the second week for the
tournament, with a minimum guarantee of
$50,000 for second place and $25,000 for third.
Semifinalists are guaranteed at least $10,000. As always, any and all winning
accrued depends on how far up the ladder a player goes.
So far, Eric Betts and Laura Myers are in
the wings waiting for the winner of tonight's match. has won a ticket to
Thursday. Tonight, one of these three will join him.

TIME FOR A "NAP" |
Daily Double: $400
Check the Newspaper. Mark has $3400 to Erica's $6200
and Patrick's $4800. Needless to say, he's going to
want to make a move here. He bets $1400 to hope to
tie Patrick. The clue: in 1889 Dow Jones changed the
name of its daily business newsletter to this. "What
is the Wall Street Journal?" Correct to tie with
$4800!

Daily Double #1: $2000 Women in
Government. Erica has reached the five-figure mark with $10,200. Mark has $7600.
Patrick is in control of this clue with $7000. He bets $3000 on this: after
heading up 2 Cabinet departments, she represented North Carolina in the Senate
from 2003 to 2009. "Who is Dole?" Correct for $10,000.
Daily Double #2: $1200 Scientists.
It's REALLY tight now with Patrick at $12,400, leading Mark by $400 (he has
$12,000) and Erica by $1400 (she has $11,000). He hedges his bets with $1000
riding on this: this Russian physiologist published his first book, "Work of the
Digestive Glands," in 1897. "Who is Pavlov?" Correct for $13,400!

We have a rather precarious dilemma,
not unlike the one faced YESTERDAY. Here's what needs to happen,
courtesy our friends at J-Archive.com:
- If Erica thinks she knows it, then
she has to bet $3400. If she doesn't, then she can get away with $1601. This
way, she leads mark if he bets nothing. And if Patrick's wrong and bets against
Mark, even better.
- For Mark, the case is like Laura's
from yesterday. Go big or go home. If he doesn't know it (or he believes a
triple stumper is coming), he bets nothing. If he does know it, he bets
EVERYTHING. But if he's to stand any chance of making the final, he has to hope
Patrick is wrong.
- Patrick wins if he bets $7801 and
is correct.

FINALIST:
Patrick Tucker
Patrick built up his bank by
himself in the first round, then did the same with a little help in the
second. He has the luck and the momentum of a contender. Let's see if
both will hold tomorrow against these two...
