Preliminaries: Cooper/Menke/Trezise
May 5

Homebase is hosting the creme de la creme of collegians as once again, 15 of the nation's best and brightest come together to face the ultimate trivial challenge, facing off against each other and the big board for up to $100,000.

Only nine of them will be invited to return next week, however, the five winners this week and four wild card top-scorers.

Another standard two-week affair awaits with an minimum guarantee of $50,000 for second place and $25,000 for third.

Semifinalists are guaranteed at least $10,000, while quarterfinalists are guaranteed $5000 for participation. As always, any and all winning accrued depends on how far up the ladder a player goes.

So far, Laura Myers of Mizzou has gotten her hand stamped for a return engagement next week. Who will join her?

Daily Double: $1000 Archaeology. Scott finds it with $1200. Kadeem has $200, while Courtney has $400. Scott bets the level on this: carved in 196 BC, its test was written by priests to honor Ptolemy V. "What is the Element?" Not even close. It was the Rosetta Stone, leaving him with $200, tied with Kadeem.

At the end of the Jeopardy! round...

$600 $5,000 $2,400
Kadeem Scott Courtney

Double Jeopardy! categories:

GEOGRAPHY HIGH-TECH CINEMA RALLY TO THE CAUSE LET'S GET PHYSICS-AL LOOK WHAT YOU'VE WON! LATIN

Daily Double #1: $1200 Geography. Chris is on $10,200. He bets $5200 on this: this desert's name is from the Mongolian. "What is the Gobi?" Correct for $15,400

Daily Double #2: $1600 Let's Get Physics-al. Chris is clearly owning this match and his opponents with $27,000. Courtney has $7200. Kadeem's $600 down. He wagers $3000 on this: it's the branch of physics that deals with the relationship between heat, work, temperature & energy. "What is thermodynamics?" Correct for $30,000!

At the end of the Double Jeopardy! Round...

$2,600 $27,600 $8,800
Kadeem Scott Courtney

Safe bet to say that barring a gigantic blunder, Scott will be back next week. The question now... will Courtney join him? She's competing for a wild card spot.

Final Jeopardy! category: ON THE MOON

IT'S THE LAST WORD OF THE INSCRIPTION ON APOLLO 11'S PLAQUE ON THE MOON & IS ALSO FOUND IN A RELATED QUOTATION

Correct response: what is mankind?

Kadeem's response: what is mankind? CORRECT. Wager: $2600. Total: $5200.
Courtney's response: what is mankind? CORRECT. Wager: $1200. Total: $10,000.
Scott's response: what is peace? WRONG. Wager: $2401. Total: $25,199.

SEMIFINALIST: Scott Menke

The word "favorite" gets thrown around here a lot. Usually it sticks to whoever has the best chance at emerging as the champion when all is said and done. Mark my words... Scott Menke is a FAVORITE.

As for Courtney, she may or may not have blown her only chance to make it through to the next round. We'll have to see.

Preliminary action continues from Sony tomorrow.
