Semifinals:
Menke/Goldstein/Betts
May
11
Fifteen of the best college students to
play the game this year met on a common battlefield. Only nine survive
to compete this week for one of three spots in the two-part final. Up
for grabs: $100,000, the 2009 Jeopardy! College Championship, and
perhaps a berth in the next Tournament of Champions.
This is the second week for the
tournament, with a minimum guarantee of
$50,000 for second place and $25,000 for third.
Semifinalists are guaranteed at least $10,000. As always, any and all winning
accrued depends on how far up the ladder a player goes.
It's win or go home for these nine.
Semifinal #1 starts... right now.

Video Daily Double: $800
The 21st Century with CNN. Scott has $1600 to Eric's
$1800. Ariella has $600. It's still early in the
game, so he goes for $1000 on this clue: the
Doomsday Vault in arctic Norway preserves these in
case of a disaster affecting the world's food
supply. "What are fish?" Nope, they're fish, leaving
him with $600.

Daily Double #1: $800 World
Capitals. Ariella finds this on the second clue of the round with $800. She bets
the max of $2000 to move into second place on this: this European capital lies
on a plain near the southern end of the Attic Peninsula. "What is Athens?"
Correct for second place and $2800!
Daily Double #2: $1600 Scrambled
Mammals. Scott and Eric have been see-sawing. Currently, Scott has $13,800 to
Eric's $12,800. Ariella has $8000. He's not going to risk putting his end game
(cheap shot coming) in jeopardy, so he only risks $1000 on this: a little
monkey: more mast. "What is a marmoset?" Correct for $14,800!

Now here's what needs to happen,
courtesy our friends at J-Archive.com:
- Ariella needs to think about
wagering $4800 or less if she suspects that a triple stumper is coming, should
Scott wager to cover Eric's doubled score. If so and both guys are wrong, she's
in the final.
- Eric wins if he is correct and
bets between $2401 and $5599 (to cover Ariella either way) and Scott is wrong.
- Scott wins if he bets $12,001 and
is correct.

Ariella's response: what is headlines? WRONG. Wager:
$8000. Total: $0.
Eric's response: what is a deadline? CORRECT. Wager: $10,399. Total:
$23,999.
Scott's response: what is headline? WRONG. Wager doesn't matter.
FINALIST:
Eric Betts
Just when you think it was
going to be an easy win for Scott Menke, he ends up screwing it in the
final. Eric just kept pouring on the pressure and made this match a very
interesting affair. If he can do that on Thursday and Friday, then Emory
may have a Jeopardy! champion in their midst.
Semifinal #2 tomorrow.
