Semifinals: Lichtenstein/Myers/Ceppos
May
12

Fifteen of the best college students to play the game this year met on a common battlefield. Only nine survive to compete this week for one of three spots in the two-part final. Up for grabs: $100,000, the 2009 Jeopardy! College Championship, and perhaps a berth in the next Tournament of Champions.

This is the second week for the tournament, with a minimum guarantee of $50,000 for second place and $25,000 for third.

Semifinalists are guaranteed at least $10,000. As always, any and all winning accrued depends on how far up the ladder a player goes.

So far, Eric Betts has won a ticket to Thursday. Tonight, one of these three will join him.

Wild Card

Jeopardy! round..

FUN WITH SCIENCE TV GEOGRAPHY KICKIN' IT OLD SCHOOL WORLD COINS CITIES' NEW NAMES YOU'RE A "Q___T"

Daily Double: $800 You're a "Q___T". Laura's been stuck behind Andrew for the last round with $2200 to his $3400. Greg has $1600. She bets just $800 on this: having an old-fashioned attractiveness or charm. "What is quaint?" Correct for $3000.

At the end of the Jeopardy! round...

$2,200 $3,400 $4,400
Greg Laura Andrew

Double Jeopardy! categories:

BIBLE BOOK HIGHLIGHTS DENIZENS OF THE UNDERGROUND GET A JOB, KID! VIVA MEXICO! CROSSWORD CLUES "I"

Daily Double #1: $1600 Viva Mexico! Greg and Laura are tied at $3800 to Andrew's $5200. Greg bets $1500 on this: Mexico celebrates Labor Day on the same date as many European nations & this holiday 4 days later. "What is Cinco de Mayo?" Correct for $5300!

Daily Double #2: $2000 Denizens of the Underground. Greg's bet from earlier is now his lead, with $10,900 to Laura's $9400 and Andrew's $7600. He bets $1000 on this: earthworms give off waste matter via organs called nephridia, the counterpart of these human organs. "What are kidneys?" Correct for $11,900!

At the end of the Double Jeopardy! Round...

$12,300 $9,400 $9,200
Greg Laura Andrew

Now here's what needs to happen, courtesy our friends at J-Archive.com:

- If Andrew thinks that there's going to be a triple stumper, then he should bet nothing. If he thinks he knows it, though, he could bet $3400 to cover Greg, should he bet to cover Laura. He'll win if he's right.

- For Laura, it's simple. Go big or go home. If she knows it, then bet it all. If not, then bet nothing. If she's right and Greg's wrong, she'll win it.

- Greg wins if he bets $6501 and is correct.

Final Jeopardy! category: WORDS OF INSPIRATION

A PROFESSOR'S 2007 ADDRESS AT CARNEGIE MELLON ON "REALLY ACHIEVING YOUR CHILDHOOD DREAMS" INSPIRED MILLIONS UNDER THIS TITLE

Correct response: what is "The Last Lecture"?

Andrew's response: what is Success? WRONG. Wager: $9200. Total: $0.
Laura's response: what is The Last Lecture? CORRECT. Wager: $9001. Total: $18,401.
Greg's response: what is The Audacity of Hope? WRONG. Wager doesn't matter.

FINALIST: Laura Myers

Something I noticed while Laura was playing... it seems like she has a bit of a problem with holding back... This is a tournament game with $100,000 on the line. Don't be afraid to make a bet. Fortune favors the bold, and Laura's going to see a lot more of that fortune if she's a little bolder.

Semifinal #3 tomorrow.
