"Round 2: Spangenberg/Schwartzberg/Gutowski" - May 4

In round one, 45 players won their games. Now they join nine seeded opponents in Jeopardy! lore for 18 more game. The 18 winners then face off for six slots. The two winners of those semifinal games have a date with destiny in the form of one Ken Jennings for a three-day final. The winner of those games wins $2 million. Second place is guaranteed $500,000, while third place is guaranteed $250,000.

No wild cards, no second chances. It's (my favorite words when it comes to Jeopardy! tourneys) win or go home.

Another former Jeopardy! great tries to one-up two round 1 survivors today...

FRANK SPANGENBERG
Police lieutenant
Douglaston, NY
1990
Season 6's top winner and recordholder until Season 19: $15,000
BEV SCHWARTZBERG
Adult literacy coordinator
Santa Barbara, CA
Won $15,000 (2/17)
PAUL GUTOWSKI
Alcohol & drug counselor
Rockville, IL
Won $22,802 (4/6)

Jeopardy! categories: Atilla the Hun, That Went to No 1?, Name That Nation, The Nature of the Beast, Hallmark Holidays, It Had to Be "U".

Daily Double: $800 Atilla the Hun. Bev ($2200 over Paul's $1000 and Frank's -$400) bets the level. The clue: at its peak, Atilla the Hun's empire ranged from the Rhine River eastward to the Ural River & this sea. Bev's guess: "What is the Black Sea?" Correct response: What is the Caspian Sea? Bev is down to $1400.

End of Round:
Frank - $4600
Bev - $2600
Paul - $2600

Double Jeopardy! categories: The Library of America, Historic ESPN, My Heavens!, I Get Them Confused, Around the Louvre, Pushing "Tin"

Daily Double #1: $2000 Pushing "Tin". Paul ($5400 to Frank's $10,200 and Bev's $4600) fronts $2000. Clue: coastal Cornish village said to be the birthplace of King Arthur. Paul's guess: "What is Tinseltown?" Good guess, but wrong. Correct response: What is Tintagel. Paul drops to $3400.

Daily Double #2: $2000 My Heavens! Frank ($12,200 over Bev & Paul's $4600) wagers $3000. Clue: he developed the 3rd of his laws of planetary motion while serving as provincial mathematician in Linz, Austria. Frank's guess: "Who is Kepler?" Correct for $15,200.

End of Round:
Frank - $18,800
Bev - $5800
Paul - $4600

The winner is guaranteed $20,000 at least, while the runners-up will get $10,000 each.

Final Jeopardy! Category: Vocabulary. Answer: its original meaning what a residnet of a certain wealthy city; now it means one who indulges in luxury. Correct response: What is sybarite?

Paul's question: What is sybarite? (RIGHT) Wager: $4597. Final score: $9197.
Bev's question: What is cosmopolitan? (WRONG) Wager: $1100. Final score: $4700.
Frank's question: What is a sybarite? (RIGHT) Wager: $7000. Final score: $25,800.

Frank becomes the second of eight of the seeded nine to move forward after spanking the competition. He takes $25,800, $40,800 total, and joins Dan Melia, Steve Chernicoff, Michael Rooney, Michael Daunt, Shane Whitlock, Brian Moore, Jerome Vered, Robert Slaven, Matt Zielenski, Chris Miller, Lan Djang, Brad Rutter, Grace Veach, Pam Mueller, and John Cuthbertson in the quarterfinal.

One ore seed, two more games. See you tomorrow!
