"Round 1: Holloway/Baxter/Richmond" - February 23

In round one, there are 135 players competing in 45 games. The winners of those games will take on nine seeded opponents. The 18 winners then face off for six slots. The two winners of those semifinal games have a date with destiny in the form of one Ken Jennings for a three-day final. The winner of those games wins $2 million. Second place is guaranteed $500,000, while third place is guaranteed $250,000.

No wild cards, no second chances. It's (my favorite words when it comes to Jeopardy! tourneys) win or go home.

BERNARD HOLLOWAY
Sophomore, No. Carolina

2002
2K2 Teen Tourney winner
BILLY BAXTER

1992
1992 College Champion
JEFF RICHMOND

1988
5-time champion

Jeopardy! categories: Astronomy, Spouse in Common, Americana, That 70s News Item, People & Places, Beastly Language

Daily Double: $800 People & Places. Bernard ($400 to Billy's $200 and Jeff's $0) bets the max of $1000. The clue: the people of this Aussie state have an ap"peel"ing nickname: Apple Islanders. Bernard's response: "What is Canberra?" Correct response: What is Tasmania? Bernard is $600 down.

End of Round:
Bernard - $200
Billy - $1000
Jeff - $6000

Double Jeopardy! categories: small state capitals, Quotable Oscar Hosts, JR, Furniture, Plays, "Gray" Matter

Daily Double #1: $2000 small state capitals. Bernard (-$200 to Jeff's $6800 and Billy's $1400) bets the max again, $2000.  Clue: a planetarium in this capital bears the name of Christa McAuliffe, who died in the 1986 Challenger explosion. Bernard's guess: "What is Tallahassee?" Correct response: What is Concord? Bernard is now $2200 in the red.

Both Bernard and Billy are in negative numbers as Jeff finds the final clue in the round...

Daily Double #2: $2000 Plays. Jeff ($12,800) bets $1000. Clue: as the title implies, this play features an important arrival, that of Hickey in the saloon. Jeff's guess: "... Don't know." Correct response: "What is 'The Iceman Cometh'?" Jeff drops to $11,800, but it doesn't matter, because looking at the scores...

End of Round:
Bernard - -$3000 - OUT, $5000
Billy - -$600 - OUT, $5000
Jeff - $11,800

... it will be Jeff against the house in Final Jeopardy!... Remember, he is guaranteed at least $15,000 if he makes it through (yes, he can still lose if he bets everything).

Final Jeopardy! Category: Bestselling Authors. Answer: in 2000 this writer, with more than 100 million copies of novels in print, had a new species of dinosaur named for him. Correct response: Who is Michael Crichton?

Jeff's question: Who is Michael Crichton? (RIGHT) Wager: $11,500. Final score: $23,300.

With that, Jeff joins Eric Terzuolo, Michael Rankins, Arthur Phillips, David Traini, Bob Harris, Vinita Kailasanath, Bev Schwartzberg, Dan Melia, Mark Eckard, and Michael Dupee in the next round with $23,300.

Next time, a recent champ in John Beck takes on two tourney vets: Tom Nosek and Carolyn Cracraft.
