"Round 1: Siegel/Borchardt/Keach" - March 1

In round one, there are 135 players competing in 45 games. The winners of those games will take on nine seeded opponents. The 18 winners then face off for six slots. The two winners of those semifinal games have a date with destiny in the form of one Ken Jennings for a three-day final. The winner of those games wins $2 million. Second place is guaranteed $500,000, while third place is guaranteed $250,000.

No wild cards, no second chances. It's (my favorite words when it comes to Jeopardy! tourneys) win or go home.

Jeopardy! categories: Medical Milestones, Harlem Globetrottin', The Onion(R), So Jump in a Great Lake!, Also an Apple Variety, I "Am"

Daily Double: $1000 The Onion(R). Kevin ($1800 to Bruce's $3400 and Diane's $1400) says those magic words: "Let's make it a true Daily Double, Alex!" The clue: March 16, 1923: "Russians continuing to kill" him; "hirsute mystic to real demise 'no later than 1925'". Kevin's response: "Who is Rasputin?" Correct for the doubler, $3600, and the lead.

End of Round:
Diane - $1200
Bruce - $6200
Kevin - $6000

Double Jeopardy! categories: Egyptian Religion, Crossword Clues "S", Before & After Jobs, Brit Lit, 1984, Big Brothers

Daily Double #1: $1200 Brit Lit. Diane ($1200 to Bruce's $7800 and Kevin's $6400) bets the maximum of $2000.  Clue: The alternate title of "Twelfth Night" means roughly the same as the title of this other Shakespeare play. Diane's guess: "'As You Wish'." One, not a question. Two, not right. Correct response: What is "As You Like It"? Diane is $800 in the red.

Daily Double #2: $1200 Big Brothers. Bruce ($9000 to Kevin's $6400 and Diane's -$800) goes only $1000. Clue: Only family in the musical sense, this group gave us "China Grove" and "Black Water". Bruce's guess: "Who are the Doobie Brothers?" Correct for $10,000.

End of Round:
Diane - -$1200 - OUT; $5000
Bruce - $16,400
Kevin - $9600

One other person is guaranteed $15,000, while the other will take home $5000. It's all dependent on ...

Final Jeopardy! Category: Historic Quotations. Answer: in 1900, Teddy Roosevelt wrote, "I have always been fond of the west African proverb:" this. Correct response: What is "Speak softly and carry a big stick"?

Kevin's question: What is Speak softly & carry a big stick? (RIGHT) Wager: $9600. Final score: $19,200.
Bruce's question: What is Speak softly and carry a BIG STICK? (RIGHT) Wager: $2801. Final score: $19,201.

The classic win-by-a-dollar maneuver carries Bruce into the next round with $19,201. He joins Eric Terzuolo, Michael Rankins, Arthur Phillips, David Traini, Bob Harris, Vinita Kailasanath, Bev Schwartzberg, Dan Melia, Mark Eckard, Michael Dupee, Jeff Richmond, John Beck, Tad Carithers, and Jerome Vered.

Next time, last year's teen champ Jennifer Wu and former TOC players Fred Ramen & Lee Lassiter. Will youth be served? Stay tuned...
