Ben Silverman: "Fashion
Star"
NBC Buys Cut-Rate Project Runway #2
From New York
Times |
Posted 4/4/11 |
As always in the
entertainment industry, business is business — and so,
Ben Silverman is back in business with NBC.
Mr. Silverman is best remembered for his brief reign as
NBC’s top programmer, one that did not result in hits or
happiness for either party. In the aftermath of the
departure, Jeff Zucker, then the network’s chief
executive, said hiring Mr. Silverman had been the
biggest mistake he made.
But new management, in the form of Comcast, has assumed
control of NBC, and on Monday, NBC will announce a deal
for “Fashion Star,” a prominent new prime-time reality
show to be delivered by Mr. Silverman’s new production
company, Electus.
In a telephone interview, Mr. Silverman acknowledged
that the move might stir a certain amount of cognitive
dissonance, but he said the fit between him and NBC was
logical and to be expected, mainly because he is the
creator and executive producer of the two highest-rated
shows on the network, “The Biggest Loser” and “The
Office.”
That point was seconded by Paul Telegdy, the executive
vice president in charge of reality programming for NBC.
“It’s a statement of fact: he has a top credit on NBC’s
top two franchises,” Mr. Telegdy said. “Ben came in. It
felt right for us. It was shortly after new management
had taken its seat at the network. We liked and they
liked it too.”
Mr. Telegdy previously reported to Mr. Silverman, but
Mr. Silverman said that relationship was less a factor
than his previous interaction with Bob Greenblatt, the
man now in the job Mr. Silverman left.
Before he joined NBC, Mr. Silverman sold the series “The
Tudors” to Showtime when Mr. Greenblatt ran programming
for that network. “I have a great relationship with
Bob,” Mr. Silverman said. “I have great relationships in
general at the network, almost stronger than when I
worked there.”
“Fashion Star” will introduce would-be designers — not
of high-end fashion in the manner of “Project Runway,”
but creators of fashion lines that might include bathing
suits or lingerie, or surf wear and jeans, Mr. Silverman
said.
He brought NBC the idea with a host attached: Elle
MacPherson, the former supermodel who now has fashion
lines. The contestants will go through the usual weekly
eliminations — 10 hours are planned, to start in 2012 —
with the big winner promised a multimillion-dollar
contract to place a new fashion line in top retail
stores.

Troubleshooting for Fuji
Fuji, FremantleMedia Team for New Concept
From Virtual
Press Office |
Posted 4/4/11 |
Fuji Television Network
Inc., Japan’s leading commercial broadcaster, and
FremantleMedia, one of the largest creators and
producers of entertainment brands in the world, proudly
unveil Troubleshooter, the second format borne of the
Creative Exchange Alliance forged between the two
companies. The Alliance is a unique partnership that was
announced in April 2010 at MIPTV, and sees executives
from both companies undertaking secondments with the aim
of co-developing and co-producing new television formats
for the international market place.
Troubleshooter is a comedy game show which sees
contestants publically airing and attempting to settle
their disputes with the help of a judge, jury and
over-sized games. From disgruntled married couples, or
even a plastic surgeon and his client, all participants
attempt to end their quarrels by facing off in a range
of hilarious challenges and games. As contestants try to
win the hearts of both the audience and the celebrity
jury, the ultimate victor is crowned after winning the
most duels. The format was developed while Jason
Tegelaar, Director of Development and New Media at
FremantleMedia’s Dutch production arm Blue Circle, was
working within Fuji TV’s headquarters in Tokyo.
Simon Spalding, Regional CEO, Europe & Asia Pacific,
FremantleMedia said: “Our Creative Exchange Alliance
with Fuji is continuing strongly, and we are very
excited to bring Troubleshooter to MIPTV. We are having
an exceptional response to Total Blackout, and we’re
confident that Troubleshooter holds equally broad
international appeal. We’re looking forward to
developing and producing many more creative and
innovative television programs as part of our alliance
with Fuji TV in the future.”
Katsuaki Suzuki, Senior Executive Managing Director,
Programming and Production Dept, Fuji TV said: “I'm
thrilled that our Creative Exchange Alliance with
FremantleMedia continues, and with even more dynamic
development since the launch was announced just one year
ago.
Our first program, Total Blackout, is already showing
great success in Europe and Asia. Now, we proudly
introduce our second cutting-edge program,
Troubleshooter, which arose from the creative chemistry
between FremantleMedia and Fuji Television Network. We
strive to make our unique alliance even stronger, and to
deliver more pioneering programs in the future.”

unscripted series that fit under Janollari’s goal of
“smart, funny and fun” programming, two of them game
shows - "The Substitute" and "Money From Strangers".
"The Substitute", according

Gabrus) surprises unsuspecting students by transforming
their classroom into a game show. Michael Davies exec
produces.
The second show, "Money

guest comedians convincing unwitting contestants to pull

"Big Brother" Making a
Comeback in the UK?
Report: Channel 5 Closing In on Deal
From Guardian |
Posted 4/1/11 |
Richard Desmond's Channel 5
is poised to sign a £200m five-year deal to bring back
Big Brother following months of tortuous negotiations
between his company and the program's producer, Endemol.
There were hopes that the deal could have been announced
this week, but last-minute legal wrangles continue to
delay the announcement of a plan that has been mooted
since Desmond bought the channel last summer.
Because of the time taken by the talks, the earliest Big
Brother could come back on air is understood to be
August. A three-week run of Celebrity Big Brother is
expected to be followed by a run of Big Brother into the
autumn and winter.
Desmond is hoping he could lure Cheryl Cole into hosting
Big Brother – an effort fuelled by this morning's Daily
Star splash "Cheryl's New B Bro Babe" – but the star's
camp totally dismissed the public overtures.
"Cheryl has not been approached, and she has no interest
in presenting Big Brother," said a spokesman for the
singer, noting that star was still waiting to hear
whether she would be able to host The X Factor in the
US.

ABDC Champ Replaces Omarion on Panel
From The Futon
Critic |
Posted 3/31/11 |
Dominic "D-Trix" Sandoval,
who won dance fans' hearts in season three when his
team, Quest Crew, was crowned America's Best Dance Crew,
returns to MTV's hit reality dance competition series
"Randy Jackson Presents America's Best Dance Crew" (ABDC),
as the newest judge. D-Trix joins returning judges Lil
Mama and JC Chasez, and will make his debut when the
sixth season premieres April 7 at 10 p.m. ET/ PT on MTV.
"I am so happy that D-Trix is joining the panel having
been a part of one of the greatest dance crews ever.
He's going to be one of the best people to give the
crews advice because he's been there; we couldn't have
anyone better qualified" says executive producer Randy
Jackson.
D-Trix knows what it takes to be a superstar on the ABDC
stage, and will judge the crews on their creativity and
ability to incorporate the "Superstar of the Week" into
their routines. D-Trix is one of the only ABDC champions
to successfully compete on Fox's "So You Think You Can
Dance," making the top eight in season three, and
returning as an All-Star in the 2010 cycle. Outside the
tours and TV competitions, D-Trix has carved a name for
himself as a dance celebrity with his very popular
YouTube series, "The Dominic Show." D-Trix continues to
work in all genres of dance with top music industry
professionals, including Snoop Dogg, Pitbull, Natasha
Bedingfield, Enrique Iglesias, Usher and more.
D-Trix says, "To think I started off dancing on
cardboard in my parent's garage to now being a judge on
"America's Best Dance Crew" is a dream and a complete
honor. As someone who has competed on the ABDC stage, I
hope to bring another perspective to the judges' table
and I look forward to helping each dance crew recognize
their potential on the show this season."
Season six of "America's Best Dance Crew" will be the
"Season of the Superstars," and, for the first time
ever, each episode will be themed to a popular celebrity
artist. Ten new dance crews will have to create dances
to master mixes of the artist of the week, incorporating
all aspects of the artist's style - from wardrobe,
inspiration and emotion to groundbreaking choreography
and skills. Special guest appearances include Ke$ha,
Black Eyed Peas, Katy Perry and Justin Bieber, and
themed episodes will be inspired by the hottest names in
music including Rihanna, Lil Wayne and more!

Vernon Kay Gets Lemon

Comic Keith Lemon Replaces "Sing If You Can" Host
From Digital
Spy |
Posted 3/31/11 |
Keith Lemon has replaced
Vernon Kay as co-host of new ITV1 reality show Sing If
You Can.
ITV and All Star Family Fortunes presenter Kay mutually
decided to part ways after feeling that a comic would
better suit the format of the show.
Now Lemon, real name Leigh Francis, will present the
gameshow alongside I'm A Celebrity... Get Me Out Of Here
winner Stacey Solomon.
"The tone took us by surprise a little - there was much
more mayhem than we expected and we felt that a comedian
would be best suited to host the show," an ITV insider
added.
Meanwhile, Kay explained of the situation: "Following
the pilot, the producers and I sat down and talked about
the tone of the show. We all agreed that because of the
mix of comedy and slapstick challenges that it would
benefit from having a comedian host it. I'm really happy
with the decision."
Sing If You Can represents the first primetime ITV1
project for Lemon, who is best known for ITV2
ratings-powerhouse Celebrity Juice.
Celebrities who are confirmed for the show include
musicians like Jedward, Chesney Hawkes, Boyzone's Mikey
Graham, Ray Quinn, Camilla Kerslake, Jonathan Ansell,
Toyah, Sinitta, Steps star Faye Tozer, Michelle Gayle
and Brenda Edwards.

"Face" Booked
Banijay Sends "Faces" to MIP
From
Worldscreen |
Posted 3/30/11 |
The game-show format Faces
leads off the Banijay International slate for MIPTV,
where the company will present a completed pilot to
international buyers.
Produced by Solar Television of Finland, Faces is a
celebrity quiz show that features questions and answers
based on famous faces. Contestants are placed in front
of a live studio audience, surrounded by screens. The
must use their power of recall and facial recognition
through challenges such as choosing the correct baby
picture of a celebrity or ordering the images of a
star's ex-girlfriends chronologically. Ruthlessness
comes into play as they try to maneuver their way into
the lead, choosing their opponents from the audience
based on their faces.
Banijay has also developed a Facebook game to complement
the series.
Banijay is also prepping It's Raining Cash, a format
developed in-house by the Banijay Creative Factory. The
show will be available at DISCOP.
Francois de Brugada, the executive VP of Banijay Group,
said, “Banijay immediately recognized the potential of
this concept. Faces is a highly original idea which will
work across many platforms. The creation of a TX ready
pilot following the presentation of a paper format shows
the kind of back-up we give to new ideas—financially,

Richard Foster, GroupM Entertainment's managing
director, said, “We were excited by the initial idea
from Gogglebox and thoroughly enjoyed realizing the idea
for Channel 5 in the U.K. We’re equally excited by the
possibilities of the show internationally, and look
forward to working with 2waytraffic, providing support
where required to help broadcasters realize local
versions.”
Ed Louwerse, 2waytraffic's managing director, added,
"From Harry Houdini to David Blaine, the art of illusion
is one of the most powerful ways to captivate and
entertain audiences everywhere. Combining these
jaw-dropping illusions with the competition of a game
show, Impossible? is a brilliant new way to create
compelling, appointment viewing across all age groups
and nationalities."

Simon Fuller to Get the
Final 2
"Idol" Creator to Manage Winner, Runner Up
From Los
Angeles Times |
Posted 3/30/11 |
For the first time since he
helped launch Adam Lambert's career in 2009, "American
Idol" creator and executive producer Simon Fuller will
be managing this year's "Idol" winner, in partnership
with 19 Entertainment and CKX Inc. Over the last eight
years, Fuller has helped guide the careers of '"Idol"
stars Kelly Clarkson, Carrie Underwood, Jordin Sparks,
David Cook and Chris Daughtry.
"Simon Fuller is the rare breed who can effect popular
culture both in America and in Europe," said Jimmy
Iovine, chairman of Interscope Geffen A&M Records and
current "Idol" mentor, in a statement. "He has brought
us a platform for music like nothing before it in
'American Idol.' The opportunity for this year's winner
and runner up to be managed by someone of his caliber
along with UMG's commitment to these artists and show is
incomparable."
"Simon Fuller is one of the best artist managers in the
business and his track record for success is
indisputable," added "Idol" host Ryan Seacrest. "Past
'Idol' winners have become stars under his guidance, and
I'm psyched that this year's 'American Idol' winner will
have the opportunity to work with him to cultivate their
respective promising careers. It's going to be exciting
to watch."
Did you hear that, Casey Abrams? Might be time to get a
little emotional again.

From TV News

Posted 3/30/11 |
The onset of Daylight Saving
Time, coupled with numerous preemptions for the NCAA
Men’s Basketball Tournament, pushed PUT levels sharply
lower and dragged most syndicated shows down in the week
ending March 20.
Among the rookies, Swift Justice with Nancy Grace (CTD)
extended its streak at the top of the chart to 27
consecutive weeks, holding firm at a 1.2. Nate Berkus
(Sony), Don't Forget the Lyrics (Twentieth) and Judge
Karen's Court (Litton) were all unchanged, at 0.9, 0.7
and 0.6, respectively.
Among the rest of the game shows, Wheel of Fortune (CTD)
skidded 1% from the week before to a 7.2; Jeopardy (CTD)
eroded 8% to a 5.5; while Who Wants to be a Millionaire
(Disney-ABC), Family Feud (Debmar-Mercury) and Are You
Smarter Than a 5th Grader? (Twentieth) were all flat at
2.3, 1.7 and 0.9, respectively.
