"Round 1: Miller/Thayer/Donohue" - March 14

In round one, there are 135 players competing in 45 games. The winners of those games will take on nine seeded opponents. The 18 winners then face off for six slots. The two winners of those semifinal games have a date with destiny in the form of one Ken Jennings for a three-day final. The winner of those games wins $2 million. Second place is guaranteed $500,000, while third place is guaranteed $250,000.

No wild cards, no second chances. It's (my favorite words when it comes to Jeopardy! tourneys) win or go home.

Jeopardy! categories: John Adams, In the Minority, Winter Sports Review, Shades of Brown, GI Joe(R), "Big" Deal

Daily Double: $1000 In the Minority. Chris ($4400 over Dennis' $2400 and Mike's $1200) bets his lead, $2000. The clue: they're the largest minority group in Kyrgyzstan. Chris' response: "Who are the Armenians?" Correct response: Who are the Russians? Chris ties Dennis' $2400.

End of Round:
Chris - $4400
Mike - $4000
Dennis - $4400

Double Jeopardy! categories: Composers, Days of the Week, Shakespearean Insults, Biology, "Pro", Caan.

Daily Double #1: $1600 Composers. Mike ($5200 to Chris' $5600 and Dennis' $4400) bets $2000 early. Clue: In 1988, more than 40 years after his death, his remains were moved from New York to Budapest for a state funeral. Mike's guess: "Who was Bartok?" Correct for $7200 and the lead.

Daily Double #2: $2000 Biology. Chris ($13,600 over Mike's $8400 and Dennis' $6000) bets $3500. Clue: excess or deficiency of this pituitary hormone leads to gigantism or dwarfism. Chris' guess: "I'm sorry?" Correct response: What is HGH? Chris drops to $10,100, still leading.

End of Round:
Chris - $18,900
Mike - $8000
Dennis - $6000

Remember, runners-up will take home $5000, while the winner is guaranteed at least $15,000.

Final Jeopardy! Category: The 20th Century. Answer: to allow people to communicate more quickly, on May 15, 1918, courtesy of the US Army, this service began. Correct response: What is air mail?

Dennis' question: What is air mail? (RIGHT) Wager: $0. Final score: $6000.
Mike's question: What is National Broadcasting? (WRONG) Wager: $7995. Final score: $5.
Chris' question: What is air mail? (RIGHT) Wager: $2899. Final score: $21,799.

So in the field of legends, a modern-day player comes to town, as Chris takes $21,799 into the next round, joining Eric Terzuolo, Michael Rankins, Arthur Phillips, David Traini, Bob Harris, Vinita Kailasanath, Bev Schwartzberg, Dan Melia, Mark Eckard, Michael Dupee, Jeff Richmond, John Beck, Tad Carithers, Jerome Vered, Bruce Borchardt, Fred Ramen, Ed Schiffer, Grace Veach, Ryan Holznagel, Mark Dawson, Michael Rooney, Pam Mueller, and Steve Newman.

Next time, Matt Morris, Leah Greenwald, and Doug Lach fight it out for Jeopardy! glory.
