"Round 1: Plovan/Berman/Juel" - March 23

In round one, there are 135 players competing in 45 games. The winners of those games will take on nine seeded opponents. The 18 winners then face off for six slots. The two winners of those semifinal games have a date with destiny in the form of one Ken Jennings for a three-day final. The winner of those games wins $2 million. Second place is guaranteed $500,000, while third place is guaranteed $250,000.

No wild cards, no second chances. It's (my favorite words when it comes to Jeopardy! tourneys) win or go home.

Jeopardy! categories: Homeland Security, Bob Dylan Chronicles, The Northernmost Capital City, Also a Gun Manufacturer, You Beast!, The Short Form

Daily Double: $1000 The Northernmost Capital City. Steve ($4200 over Phoebe's $3600 and Brad's $2400) bets $1800. The clue: Hanoi, Phnom Penh, Rangoon, Vientiane. Correct: What is Hanoi? Michael: What is Rangoon? He drops to a tie with Brad.

End of Round:
Brad - $1600
Steve - $5600
Phoebe - $4800

Double Jeopardy! categories: Nature Poetry; Bruce Almighty; Rough Politics; Roll Over, Beethoven; Mr. Tea; I Pity the "Fool"!

Daily Double #1: $800 Bruce Almighty. Brad ($10,000 to Steve's $12,000 and Phoebe's $8800) bets his distance, $2000. his July 20, 1973 death in Hong Kong at age 32 shocked the world. Brad goes blank. Correct response: Who is Bruce Lee? Brad goes to third with $8000.

Daily Double #2: $1600 Rough Politics. Steve ($15,200 over Phoebe's $8800 and Brad's $8000) goes $6000. Clue: "If anyone wants to (follow) me, go ahead, they'd be very bored", this politician said in 1987; they did, & they weren't. Steve's guess: "Who is Michael Dukakis?" Correct response: Who is Gary Hart? Now we have a game with Steve at $9200.

End of Round:
Brad - $8400
Steve - $13,200
Phoebe - $10,400

Remember, runners-up will take home $5000, while the winner is guaranteed at least $15,000.

Final Jeopardy! Category: Major League Baseball. Answer: the team names of these 2 expansion clubs start with the same 3 letters; one might catch the other. Correct response: What are the Mariners and the Marlins?

Brad's question: What is !@? (WRONG) Wager: $3999. Final score: $4401.
Phoebe's question: What are the Diamondbacks and the Marlins? (WRONG) Wager: $10,000. Final score: $400.
Steve's question: What are the Mariners and the Marlins? (RIGHT) Wager: $7601. Final score: $20,801.

Steve's been a trickster! But he's justified, as he takes $20,801 into the next round with Eric Terzuolo, Michael Rankins, Arthur Phillips, David Traini, Bob Harris, Vinita Kailasanath, Bev Schwartzberg, Dan Melia, Mark Eckard, Michael Dupee, Jeff Richmond, John Beck, Tad Carithers, Jerome Vered, Bruce Borchardt, Fred Ramen, Ed Schiffer, Grace Veach, Ryan Holznagel, Mark Dawson, Michael Rooney, Pam Mueller, Steve Newman, Chris Miller, Leah Greenwald, Jonathan Groff, Brian Moore, Robert Slaven, Shane Whitlock, and Michael Daunt awaiting him.

Next time: slot 32 goes to Eugene Finerman, Tom Nichols, or Chacko George.
