Sasuke Stage Part
2
December 19
Last time, the competition moved to the
only place where it could logically move... the big stage. The big
leagues. The grueling obstacles of Mount Midoriyama. There, the bottom
five of the top 10 were met with defeat at the hands of the toughest
obstacle in attendance... the clock. #5 Rich King, though, is still in
the running to move to Stage Two and beyond. We now go back to Mount
Midoriyama in Japan, where our #4 seed is about to take the course.
That #4 seed is Paul Darnell, 27. He
never thought he would actually be in Japan. He hopes to even make it
past the first obstacle. He hit a bit of a hitch in the Curtain Slider.
But he was met with defeat as his leg hits the water on the Halfpipe
Attack. And his ankle bends all the way back.
Next is #3 Travis Furlanic, who is racing
for him and his uncle David Campbell. But he too gets a taste of
Midoriyama mud at the hands of the Jumping Spider.
Next up, one of the two seasoned veterans
of Sasuke, #2 seed Levi Meeuwenberg, 23. First time out, he got to the
Cliffhanger in Stage 3. Second time... The Salmon Ladder in Stage 2.
Third time... the Slider Jump. He slipped in the Twelve Timbers, but
he's back on track. He. Is. Blazing the stage. He has one minute to make
the Final Climb... He gives the crowd a flip, then Mr. America locks in
the spot in the Second Stage.
Finally, decked out in his G4 American
Ninja Challenge first, the top-seeded challenger Brian Orosco, 26, a
two-time vet of the Ninja Warrior course. He's just trying to keep
himself calm. He shows his buddies how it's done on the Sasuke course.
He too is tearing up the stage, and on the clock, 40 to climb. And he's
the third to finish!
LEADERBOARD after Stage 1
Levi Meeuwenberg - :29.4
Brian Orosco - :18.6
Rich King - :13.4
Now it's onto STAGE 2, where contestants
will have only 70 seconds to surge through six more obstacles: the
Downhill Jump, the Salmon Ladder, the Stick Slider, the Unstable Bridge,
the Metal Spin, and the Wall Lift.
First up is Rich King, who's put on a
suitable set of pants to take on the course. He makes short work of the
Salmon Ladder and the Stick Slider. The Unstable Bridge, though... takes
him out.
Brian Orosco is next. He gets hung up by
the Salmon Ladder, but he makes up ground. He's got to move faster,
though, because time is not on his side. He takes a dive at the Unstable
Bridge before time runs out.
That leaves just one more competitor to
take on the course... #2, Levi Meeuwenberg. Last time, he fell at the
Salmon Ladder. This time... Not happening. He makes it to the Metal
Spin... and to the Wall Lift... and to the FINISH! And a nice flip to
boot!
Now it's Levi vs. STAGE 3. Speed gives
way to strength. Levi will have to defeat the Arm Rings, the Globe
Grasp, the Devil Steps, the Cliffhanger, the Jumping Bars, the Spider
Flip, and the Circle Slider to gain access to the Final Stage.
And again, he has all the time he needs.
Levi is mentally preparing for the Cliffhanger, where he met his
Waterloo on his first trip to Sasuke. He proceeds with respect and
caution... but the Cliffhanger says NO. So alas, no American will
achieve total victory today.
That concludes the first American Ninja
Warrior tournament, but given the amazing run by Levi, Brian, Rich, and
the rest of the Ninja finalists, you can be certain that the search for
the first American Ninja Warrior has only begun. With more tournaments
ahead, stay with us for... MORE crazy competitors... MORE outrageous
obstacles... and MORE "American Ninja Warrior!"
