Semifinals: Hammerstrom/Lewell/Barrieau
November 20
Last week, 15 of America's best and brightest teachers came together to play on our Teachers' Tournament. Of those, nine survive to play this week - five game winners and four wild-cards. Now it's a win-or-go-home affair, as only the winners of the next three games will earn the right to play in the finals for $100,000 and a shot at $250,000 in the next Tournament of Champions.

What challenges await these educators? How will they rise to meet them? The answers to these questions could be worth $100,000 for the winner, $50,000 for the first runner-up, and $25,000 for the second runner-up. Semifinalists are guaranteed $10,000. Any and all prizes depend on how far up a player moved in the standings.

The winner of this match gets Becky Giardina and John Pearson. The losers get $10,000.

SPEAK UP! DON'T SAY UM

Category #6 will be an element that does not end in "um".

Daily Double: $600 Don't Say Um. Mary Beth is in a tie with Maryanne, $2400 a piece. She bets $1000 on this: the Latin for this element gave us the word plumbing. "What is lead?" RIGHT for $3400!

Daily Double #1: $1200 World History. Eli earned $1200 unanswered going into the third clue of the round. He can overtake second place with an all-in bet. He does so. Here's the clue for $3000... on August 26, 1789 France's National Assembly approved this "declaration" that proclaimed, "Men are born and remain free". "What is the Declaration of Rights of Man & Citizen?" FOR THE DOUBLER, $6000!

Daily Double #2: $1600 Inspiration. Mary Beth has $6200, $600 less than Eli and $2000 less than Maryanne. She bets $2000 for the tie on this: looking like a giant lying down, Cave Hill near Belfast inspired this man in the 1720s. "Who is Swift?" Jonathan Swift puts her into a tie for the lead!

At the end of Double Jeopardy!...

Mary Beth Maryanne Eli

Now we break down the numbers courtesy of J-Archive.com...

- Maryanne wins if... she bets $7001 and Eli tries to two-thirds Mary Beth & is wrong.
- Eli wins if... he bets between $801 and $2400 on a triple stumper.
- Mary Beth wins if... she bets $8601 and is right.

Final Jeopardy! category: NOVEL TITLES

THESE ARE NOT FOUND IN THE KORAN, & THE ANGEL GABRIEL TOLD MUHAMMAD THAT THEY WERE NOT REVEALED BY GOD

Correct response: what are "The Satanic Verses"?

Maryanne's response: what are The Satanic Verses? CORRECT. Wager: $7800. Total: $15,600.
Eli's response: what is The Satanic Verses? CORRECT. Wager: $14,800. Total: $29,600.
Mary Beth's response: what are The Satanic Verses? CORRECT. Wager: $8601. Total: 29,601.

Finalist: Mary Beth Hammerstrom

Maryanne had the momentum going into the half, but then Mary Beth took it from her after the second Daily Double. Plenty of room to make a move, and she made all the right moves, getting most of the big money clues and padding a lead. Now let's see how she does against....
