Semifinals: Pearson/Shuker-Haines/Moriarity
November 18
Last week, 15 of America's best and brightest teachers came together to play on our Teachers' Tournament. Of those, nine survive to play this week - five game winners and four wild-cards. Now it's a win-or-go-home affair, as only the winners of the next three games will earn the right to play in the finals for $100,000 and a shot at $250,000 in the next Tournament of Champions.

What challenges await these educators? How will they rise to meet them? The answers to these questions could be worth $100,000 for the winner, $50,000 for the first runner-up, and $25,000 for the second runner-up. Semifinalists are guaranteed $10,000. Any and all prizes depend on how far up a player moved in the standings.

Game 1 of the Semifinals features...

Daily Double #2: $1200 Short Stories. John has $1200 on Katie's $4800. He bets $2500 on this: "Bow Wow" & "A Bit of a Shock", 2 of John O'Hara's stories about Joey Evans, were the basis for his 1940 musical. "What is 'Guys & Dolls'?" No, it was "Pal Joey", dropping him to $3500 for second place.

Now we break down the numbers courtesy of J-Archive.com...

- Katie wins if... she bets $4199 and is correct, while the others are wrong (should John wager to cover a double-up on Timothy's score).
- Timothy wins if... he bets $3599 and is right, while John is incorrect.
- John wins if... he bets $8101 and is right.

Final Jeopardy! category: BUILDINGS

CHARLES EVANS HUGHES LAID THE CORNERSTONE FOR THIS BUILDING ON OCTOBER 13, 1932 & GOT TO WORK IN IT FOR ABOUT 6 YEARS

Correct response: what is the US Supreme Court Building?

Katie's response: what is the Flatiron Bldg? WRONG. Wager: $4800. Total: $0.
Timothy's response: what is the Empire State Building? WRONG. Wager: $8400. Total: $0.
John's response: what is the Empire State Building? WRONG. Wager: $8200. Total: $500.

Finalist: John Pearson

What's the old saying? It ain't much, but it'll work? That's pretty much the story as told by Final Jeopardy!. John can't afford to have another outing like that, though.
