Preliminaries: Giardina/Lewell/Pearson
November 14
The newest in Jeopardy!'s line of great challenges is coming around again, with fifteen of America's greatest teachers being honored by coming to play the great American quiz show of record. At stake, $100,000 and a shot at $250,000 later on in the next Jeopardy! Tournament of Champions.

What challenges await these educators? How will they rise to meet them? The answers to these questions could be worth $100,000 for the winner, $50,000 for the first runner-up, and $25,000 for the second runner-up. Semifinalists are guaranteed $10,000, while everyone who competes gets $5000 and a copy of "Classroom Jeopardy!". Any and all prizes depend on how far up a player moved in the standings.

So far, we have three. In 30 minutes, we'll have six.

Daily Double: $600 Annual Events. John is the only one in money right now with $6000. He bets $2000 on this: this holiday falls on what was once the last day of the Celtic year when the ghosts of the dead returned to earth. "What is Halloween?" RIGHT for $8000!

At the end of Jeopardy!... Maryanne sweeps the Canadian category.

Daily Double #1: $1600 I Resign! Maryanne has $8600 to $11,400 for John. She bets $2000 on this: in 2013 the chairman of this food company chicken-tendered his resignation as a University of Arkansas trustee. "What is Chick-Fil-A?" No, it was Tyson Foods, leaving her with $6600.

Daily Double #2: $1200 It Ends with "U". Becky has $4400 to John's $13,800. She fronts it all on this: hastily prepared or improvised. "What is impromptu?" FOR THE DOUBLER, $8800!

At the end of Double Jeopardy!... It's John's game to lose. The best the ladies can hope for is wild card.

Final Jeopardy! category: SYMBOLS

ONE LEGEND SAYS CLOVIS, KING OF THE FRANKS, ADOPTED HIS SYMBOL AFTER FLOWERS REVEALED A SAFE RIVER CROSSING FOR HIS ARMY

Correct response: what is the fleur-de-lis?

Maryanne's response: what is the fleur de lis? CORRECT. Wager: $9400. Total: $18,800
Becky's response: what is the fleur de lis? CORRECT. Wager: $8001. Total: $18,801.
John's response: what is the fleur de leis? CORRECT. Wager doesn't matter.

Semifinalist: John Pearson

John started out the only player in money. Then the ladies took over, but the guy at the end never wavered. He has a consistent buzzer strategy and he played it all the way to the end so that the final would not be a factor.

But don't be so quick to write these two ladies off, because their scores are keeping them in the conversation, particularly Becky's, who has enough to earn a return trip alongside Mary Beth Hammerstrom from Tuesday.

Tomorrow, we will have your final nine.
