Last week, 15 of America's
best and brightest teachers came together to play on our
Teachers' Tournament. Of those, nine survive to play
this week - five game winners and four wild-cards. Now
it's a win-or-go-home affair, as only the winners of the
next three games will earn the right to play in the
finals for $100,000 and a shot at $250,000 in the next
Tournament of Champions. What challenges await these
educators? How will they rise to meet them? The answers
to these questions could be worth $100,000 for the winner, $50,000 for
the first runner-up, and $25,000 for the second runner-up. Semifinalists
are guaranteed $10,000. Any and
all prizes depend on how far up a player moved in the standings.
John Pearson is standing
by. One of these three players will join him.

Daily Double: $1000 Flashin' Some Fashion. At $1800, Anne is tied with Patrick
and has half of Becky's total. If she went all in and was right, she would still
be tied, but for the lead. She's GOING FOR IT! For $3600... popular in the '20s
& again in the '60s, this French-named hat will be there with bells on. "What is
a cloche?" FOR THE DOUBLER, $3600!

Daily Double #1: $1200
Let's All Chant. Anne has a $1600 lead, $9200 to
$7600 for Becky. She bets $1500 on this: priests
chant the name of the god Ptah in the last scene of
this opera. "What is 'Aida'?" RIGHT for $10,700!
Daily Double #2: $1600 Front to
Back, Back to Front. On a rally, Patrick scored $10,000 semi-unanswered to
Anne's $15,100 and Becky's $12,400. He fronts $2200 on this: beastly home and
Mideast currency. "What is lair & rial?" That ... would've been right, but
Patrick blanks out, dropping him to $7800 at the end of the round.

Now we break
down the numbers courtesy of J-Archive.com...
- Patrick
wins if... he bets less than $2400 and either we end on
a triple stumper or Patrick is correct.
- Becky wins if... she bets between $3201 and $4599,
while Anne is incorrect.
- Anne wins if... she bets $9701 and is right.

Correct response: what is archery
(as in "The Hunger Games")?
Patrick's response: what is swimming? WRONG. Wager: $6800. Total: $1000.
Becky's response: what is archery? CORRECT. Wager: $12,400. Total:
$24,800.
Anne's response: what is skateboarding? WRONG. Wager doesn't matter.
Finalist:
Becky Giardina
The final
decides it again. Anne would have won it by a dollar
were it not for an incorrect response. Becky, on the
other hand, played straight Jeopardy! all the way
through and it pays off in the end thanks to lateral
thinking about what book series/movie was popular in the
summer of 2012.
Meanwhile,
the reaping continues for the two-day final tomorrow.
