Preliminaries: Matthews/Duchovny/Shaughnessy
February 18

Last time on the Million Dollar Celebrity Invitational, Pat Sajak completely owned the game, giving him a shot at the May semis in seat #5, joining Michael McKean, Andy Richter, Jane Kaczmarek, and Harry Shearer.

We still need four more semifinalists, though, so today, and every third Thursday of every month, another winner will be crowned and will move one step closer to winning the top prize of $1 million for the charity of his or her choice.

The player who wins this game (and the four to follow) will donate at least $50,000 to their charity. The runners-up will take away $25,000. Any and all monies will be determined by how far up the ladder a player goes.

This month's stars are...

Chris Matthews
"Hardball" & "The Chris Matthews Show"
La Salle College High School Chris Matthews Scholarship Fund
David Duchovny
The Joneses & "Californication"
UNICEF
Charles Shaughnessy
"Mad Men"
1736 Family Crisis Center

Jeopardy! round..

OFFICIAL
STATE STUFF
THE NANNY TV ADJECTIVES LIFE'S
A (MILITARY)
CAMPAIGN
CHEERY "O"s CALI-FUN-ICATION

The Daily Double goes unclaimed. At the end of the round...

$400 $1,800 $4,800
Chris David Charles

Double Jeopardy! categories:

THE TRUTH IS
OUT THERE
HEY,
MATTHEWS
AD MEN HYPHENATES SOUTH
AMERICAN
COUNTRIES
HOLY ____!

Daily Double #1: $2000 The Truth Is Out There. David finds it with $3800 to Charles' $6800. David bets the level on this: in one of her many untitled poems, this reclusive woman wrote, "Truth--is as old as God...& will endure as long as He." "Who is Emily Dickinson?" Correct for $5800.

Daily Double #2: $800 South American Countries. Chris on $3600 is lagging behind with $11,800 for David. Charles has $10,800. "I guess I'll bet it." As in all of it, on this: its name is Spanish for "little Venice." "What is Venezuela?" Correct for $7200!

At the end of Double Jeopardy!, we have us a game...

$10,000 $11,800 $10,800
Chris David Charles

J-Archive.com calls this a 4/5 game with Stratton's Dilemma in play.

- Chris wins if... he bets between $801 (covering a zero bet by Charles) and $8000 (covering David on a triple stumper).
- Charles wins if... he bets everything and is right, while David bets everything plus a dollar and is wrong (OR he bets nothing anticipating a triple stumper). You know they historically dumb down the material for celebs, so just go ahead and bet everything.
- David wins if... he bets $9801 and is correct.

Final Jeopardy! category: ENTREPRENEURS

WHEN HE PASSED AWAY IN DECEMBER 1980, FLAGS IN KENTUCKY FLEW AT HALF-STAFF FOR 4 DAYS

Correct response: who was Col. Harland Sanders?

Chris' response: who was Colonel Sanders? CORRECT. Wager: $10,000. Total: $20,000.
Charles' response: who was Colonel Sanders? CORRECT. Wager: $10,000. Total: $20,800.
David's response: who is Jim Beam? WRONG. Wager: "All."

SEMI-FINALIST: Charles Shaughnessy

He managed to rack up a lead in the opening round without the use of a Daily Double. That's knowledge you have to respect, and ultimately, I respect it. David pretty much deserved to lose this match on account of a) the wrong response, and b) the wrong wager.

Three new stars next month, March 18.
